Oscar Schmidt delivers his speech upon being enshrined to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2013. To learn more about Oscar Schmidt take a look at his official Hall of Fame bio at www.hoophall.co...
He also refused that contract, because, he also knew that he would not have been able to sustain his style of play over a normal, real NBA full 82 game season. There were other more talented and gifted players in the NBA that would have stifled him and rendered him scoreless at times, the NBA just chose to go with "the good guys" of the league. I mean that 1988 USA Men's roster had players like Daniel Majerle, Danny Manning, Hersey Hawkins, J.R. Reid! C'mon!!!!! Really?
@@skineyemin4276 25 pts in 25 minutes in 5 match, 46 points against us team. 42ppg. oh no shut up u kid. brazil love this man, and this man love to play for brazil more than nba. he will be the top 3 also in nba, if he get the chance to be drafted at young age like other nba HoF. he reject the contract bcs he has to
@@skineyemin4276 Scottie Pippen guarded him at Olympic 1992 (yeah, the Dream Team) and Oscar still dropped 24 pts. 4 years later and already 38 by that time, Pippen guarded him again and Oscar scored even more, 26pts.
Just to give u an idea, this guy scored 49,737 points in 1,615 official games at 30.7 pt/game average with a top of 42ppg in one season. He managed to win a 3 point contest with an incredible 22/25. He averaged 91% from free throw in his last 15 years of professional career with a record of 90 consecutive. He had 4 shirt retired by teams he played with....
When he was telling the story of his wife i could see everything...The empty gym, the awkwardness of asking her to come rebound for him, we need a movie of this man.
We sure need it, dude. I was born in Brazil and I can tell you this guy is just a legend. Greatest shooter I've ever seen. Not playing in NBA kinda of made him not that popular between americans supporters, but when the legends nominate him to HOF you can imagine how good he was. If he had played in NBA I'm pretty sure all american would think in Oscar when talk about the greatests.
unbelievable to imagine someone that scored 10.000 points in his career more than Kareem....He was that man...against the USA he scored 47 points...Sure deserves his place in the HOF..
In the end, when he says he hope to be with her until he dies, he says that because he has brain cancer, he just live his life like was the last day everyday. I dont know you notice, but when the camera get him by side, he has a scar in the head. Every 6 months, i think, he open the head to see if the cancer is bigger.
Man I don't know how come I didn't watch sir Oscar NBA hall of speech until today? That was the best speech ever made in sport history... Hats off Mr Oscar Schmidt
This man deserves more recognition, especially from the younger ones. He is simply one of the greatest scorers ever...in any era. He didn't have to play in the NBA to prove it, but the respect he has from all the great basketball minds in that room says a lot. Oh, and what a speech.
Julio Campos The two players Oscar and Marcel were called to Draft of the NBA But prefer FIBA because they could wear the shirt of Brazil's national team At the time an NBA professional could not play competition for his country
Isn't it unique that the greatest hof speach ever was by a non-NBA player? And I don't mean this in a bad way, the exact opposite. Hence the greatness of the vision Dr. Naismith had when he invented something so incredible and universal as basketball. That almost 130yrs later, a Brazilian guy who shot like a God and started from the scratch was able to celebrate it with such and intense and passionate talk about...life.
it's one of the downers of our awesome USA. We live in a bubble without seeing the truly many inspirational and diverse peoples and cultures of the rest of the world.
@@mattcoffee1269 as a Brit I know what you mean, we do the same with fo…soccer, it’s something I think we both need to improve on. It really just lessens the amount of greatness we can enjoy
Couldn’t agree more with all of you. 17 yo Australian here with an open mind for learning. I think one of the greatest things one can strive for in life is knowledge. Knowledge and understanding of the world around oneself. People are surprised by how much I know about really obscure stuff like being able to name just about every American state and find it on a blank map, or the fact I follow so many ball sports (basketball, American football, rugby, rugby league, Australian football Canadian football… Gaelic football, baseball and soccer on the occasion too.) That’s just the natural curiosity I possess ;) 👍🏻
Imagine walking into a room of hall of famers and all time greats and looking then in the eye and saying I promise you I practiced more than anyone here. You could see he meant that and somehow I believed it when he said it. Legend.
He would go home after practice just after scoring 20 shoots of 3 points in a row. If he lost the last one, he would start all over. You can believe him.
What an honest seem to be guy, I'm shocked and embarrassed to say I didn't know who he was until now, I'm gonna be doing my homework on him now. Enjoyed the video one of the best speeches I've ever heard great, funny, good tears man how have I missed out on this guy✌️💙
This dude's 1988 Olympic numbers were GODLY. His overall stats are impressive as a whole. He's one of the greatest international players in history. Seems like a genuinely great guy too. Well deserved.
I'm a Puertorican and believe me... in my country (Puerto Rico) there's no many people that knows who is Oscar Schmidt... believe me, this man is a true gentlemen and legend at the same time...
That was just a beautiful heartfelt speech by a beautiful man. I can only assume 44 people accidentally hit the thumbs down button as they couldn't see properly due to the tears in their eyes.
I'm Puertorrican and sometime in the 80s there was this basketball international competition in the island. They had 4 games scheduled in one day at Clemente Coliseum and I had tickets to the games. I got to the Coliseum around 7am .. a friend was getting me and my brother early to the stadium. It was all dark, the stadium was empty. I could only hear a basketball bouncing and a guy practicing. With nothing else to do, I sat and watched that guy practice. I swear.. I saw that guy shooting for maybe half and hour, who knows how long he had been practicing. I didn't see him miss. He was incredible. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Later that day, the second game on schedule was Brasil versus Canada, I think.. when I saw #14 for Brasil, I told my brother.. HE'S THE SAME GUY PRACTICING IN THE MORNING. He scored 38 in that game. He was incredible. ... and that's when I knew who Oscar Schmidt was.
I do not know if noticed ... But in practically the whole speech, instead of talking about himself, Oscar made great all those who were part of his career. I believe that this is how a great man acts.
Hats off for the great Oscar Shcmidt,Greece loves you,Galis,Petrovic and Oscar were the best scores in the international basketball, and definitely players of NBA's level
I totaly agee. Maybe I would add also to them, Šarunis Marciulonis. All of them, played at the same era, so we could compare them, even in the age before internet. I am Croatian, so I always favoured Dražen, like greeks Galis, or litvans Šarunas. But I always admired other guys who could play. Master of the game is master, so I always admired Oskar. God bless him, and all other basketball masters.
Absolutely genius, the speech was sensational, as good as he was a a scorer. All respect from an Spanish fan. I remember him playing for Forum Filatélico de Valladolid. He absolutely deserved to be with the best, he would have triumphed in the NBA,.
That’s what every Brazilian citizen should carry in our hearts: love for our country and commitment to make it a better place by setting our own very best example. Oscar and Senna have been the biggest heroes to my generation, thank you both very much!
Great Hall of Famer. I always enjoyed watching Oscar Schmidt when he would pump both fists in the air after draining each of his three point attempts when playing for his national team Brazil. Great speech!! After complimenting and praising his wife and proclaiming his love for her. There were plenty of tears in many eyes after that speech. Great job Oscar.
Oscar is a legend. I remember watching the Indianapolis game live as a kid. What a performance and emotional game for us Brazilians. I've met him once, such a nice guy. Well deserved being on the HOF.
Wow. This is a great man. What a heartwarming speech. For some reason the pollen got heavy in my living room and I could not fight back tears. When Larry Bird introduced him I knew that he had to be someone very special because Larry ain’t no joke about knowing good character.
Another curious thing: at some moment, Oscar asked "do you remember Jack Sikma?", because Tanjević, his coach in Europe, was a fan of Sikma and taught him the "Sikma moves", which Oscar, with his shoot skills, used a lot in his career. Sikma played 9 years with the Sonics, was 7x all star and NBA Champion in 79 (the only Sonic title). Payton, who was being inducted alongside Oscar, played 13 years with the Sonics, was 9x all star and NBA champion too (with the Heat). At the time of Oscar and Payton induction (2013), Sikma was not a HOF. They "corrected" this mistake in 2019...
Another Sonic mistake and Sigma agrees is that Tom Chambers should be in the HOF. I agree. If Chris Mullen and Manu Ginobli belong in the HOF so does TC 24.
Larry turned as red as the curtains. It's one thing for someone like me to think Larry is a legend but for someone like Oscar to give that kind of accolade .... ❤️
After more than a decade treating from brain cancer, Oscar stop treating it at October, 2022. And he is still with us. This proves how much of a warrior he is in addition to being one of the greatest basketball players that ever existed in the entire history of this sport. I am Brazilian and I was lucky to follow the career of this incredible and irreplaceable player. Kiddos, research and learn more about Oscar Schmidt. It is worth it.
A great speech from a great athlete. Hope he overcomes his health problems and enjoy his time on earth for a long long time. Seeing him and admiring his ingenious simplicity, his empathic speech it reminds me that even the greatest persons on earth are here on "borrowed time". Tomorrow I'm going to my mom's memorial, 40 days since she passed away from a (inoperable) brain tumor. Hope Oscar makes it...
Coming here 9 years after that comment, to record that it's still going strong! At the end of last year, he decided to stop the chemotherapies after saying that he no longer fears death, but apparently the cancer has receded and he is fine!
Phenomenal scorer/shooter but def not even top25 player ever nevermind GOAT. He wasn’t a great defender, passer, rebounder. Def one of the GOAT scorers/shooters though!
Never imagine that was such a good speech. As a Brazilian couldn’t be more proud. You and Ayrton Senna teach everyone what patriotism, something is missing a lot right now in Brazil.
Mr Schmidt is selling himself short when talking about his playing against the Dream Team - the Dream Team guys were just as happy to meet him and play against him. I remember watching that game against Brazil (I didn't know who Schmidt was at the time) and seeing all of them standing in line specifically to greet him; it was genuine.
shit, got me goosebumps at the end, great speech, from one of the greatest basketball players ever! respect from Lithuania. (nice shout out of Sabas, ha!:)
“My Greatest Friend” is THE greatest appreciation I think that can be given. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 💯💯💯💯 CONGRATULATIONS… hate im soo late to celebrate this Legendary Man but much❤️❤️❤️ to his Family also
Oscar, a great guy! Remarkable and unforgettable! As a Brazilian, I´m so proud we can have a Brazilian guy in the Hall of Fame ! Thanks, Oscar! God bless you and your beautiful Family!
I'm Brazilian, and I'm very proud that he chosed to play for our National team instead of the NBA. We don't see this passion for our country nowadays... A trully passionate guy

Marcante ...
