The thing that bothered me about the Hell Freezes Over tour was that Randy and Bernie weren't part of the show. It was a great show, but it would have been just that much better if they were there.
@derhandtrommler
@derhandtrommler Год назад
They were FORMER members, both left of their own accord. Why should they have been part of HFO ? It wasn't a class reunion. It was a celebration of the band as it existed before the "14 year vacation".
@BhutSwaney
@BhutSwaney Год назад
Uhm... not exactly. Henley or Frey would be quick to tell you they've never celebrated a whole lot about the band by the time their 14-year vacation started.

It’s more enjoyable to split $$$ five ways than seven. Seriously, I doubt it would have worked. If I had my guess, Glenn was probably thinking, “do we really even need Felder”, at the time. My guess is Felder was always on shaky ground for that reunion.

Randy was my favorite singer in the Eagles and loved his contribution to Poco. Also, some good solo stuff. I saw the Eagles 3 times in the 70's ( one ticket price was $7.50 and they opened for the Stones). Poco was the best band I never saw live. RIP Mr. Meisner and thank you for the joy you left in this world.

Bernie was cool but Don Felder & Joe Walsh with Randy Meisner was actually the best lineup of the Eagles ever until Glen Fry screwed that up!!
@jeffnelson2028
@jeffnelson2028 Год назад
Exactly right! It was kind of like that magic lineup when Lyndsey and Stevie joined FM. The Eagles should have maintained the five-way equal partnership, supported and treated Randy, one of the most talented guys, like a real friend, maybe encouraged Felder to work on his singing and get his confidence up (and, along those lines, get Henley some drum lessons with a real pro), maybe helped Joe get clean and sober earlier on, not treated the others like inferior sidemen… But I think their drug use only fueled the “Gods’”greed and continued mistreatment of the others. There were a lot of things they could have done to make an awesome band even greater-and healthier-but Glen and Don just got too selfish, egotistical, greedy and obsessed. Felder’s book discusses candidly what went on behind the scenes.
@stevenmaginnis1965

Yes, Randy Meisner was an excellent bass player and once Don Felder and then Joe Walsh came in there was a Stills-Young thing going between them.
@derhandtrommler

His name is Glenn Frey,Champ. How did he do anything wrong ? You know so little about the band that you can't spell the name of one of it's most famous members. What a dope.
@harrisongelles685
@harrisongelles685 Год назад
Randy and Bernie were founding members! They were great together. Felder came on the on the border album. Walsh came in later and was good, but Bernie was essential to the early success of The Eagles. Frey didn’t screw it all up. Frey and Henley were the leaders of the group and had to make tough decisions. Meisner quit the band.

Randy Meisner is a legend. Great high- range singing voice and some real nice bass playing. Listen again to “Hotel California” and focus on the bass. Great bands need great rhythm sections and Randy laid down solid bass lines. His health issues kept him from re-joining the Eagles when Bernie Leadon played with them in around 2015. Who will replace these fine musicians??? Who will be the next great rock band?? I think the days of outstanding bands like The Eagles are sadly over and gone.

Just a really fine overview of Randy Meisner's career, John. He mentions at 46:12 the toll that being a touring musician takes on a marriage. It brought to mind my favorite Robert Earl Keen song on that subject, "What I Really Mean." Nice to know that Randy's voice and bass playing will continue to entertain music fans forever.

It's sort of strange. I've noticed over the years that there are a great number of extremely good musicians all over the country. To put together a talented band in which the personalities and the chemistry click is quite difficult sometimes. Writing hit songs is probably the hardest, most stressful thing a group goes through. Then of course ego's start to come into play. I think boredom too because the real popular touring bands play the same songs every night in 25 or 30 cities. It's an even harder road once you're famous.

Every one of these guys you feature in this video are case studies in people who are underappreciated and didn't get the credit they deserved. Not many people can claim to be country rock pioneers to the degree of Furay, and he's the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. Leadon...another Pioneer first with Dillard & Clark, working with Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman with the Burritos, and then the Eagles. Messina...an amazing guitarist and even his first production work with Buffalo Springfield has its genius moments. And the list goes on. Thank you so much for keeping these names and their talents out in front. You are are a real champion for these people.

I never really liked any of Henley's solo music. Anyway, when ii came between Henley and Frey, I liked Frey more, but Randy was 100% my favorite. I was disappointed that Randy and Henley both didn't do lead vocals together like Glenn and Henley always did.. i liked there first album when they all sang almost the same amount of songs as opposed to other albums which had mostly just 2 singing. .Randy's voice complemented everyone else's . IMO the Eagles never would have taken off without their wings, Bernie and Randy. ♥️♥️R.I.P. ❤ Randy

Love the Eagles, always have. Not a hater. My explanation and opinion concerning the Eagles. Glenn Frey,,,,, through the inspiration of Linda Ronstadt,,,,,, formed the Eagles. He was not a leader. He took her advice, thankfully to move on and that was a good thing. He chose good musicians in the very beginning. He needed a drummer and thats where Henley comes into the picture. For morale, everything was pretty much in alignment before Henley comes onboard. Henley was smarter than Frey and he knew this. Henley knew, early on, that the Eagles had great potential, moreso than Frey. This is where the trouble begins. Henley wanted CONTROL, thus he begins manipulating Frey. If the other band members didn't like the new rules and regulations, then screw them. Leadon, Meisner, Felder, Walsh, and later on Schmit, were "employees" of the Eagles. Nothing more. Nothing less. Frey being a "follower", went right along with Henley. THIS WAS, actually the beginning of the end for the Eagles, and this was early on. They were a GREAT band for sure, but they could have been a much much much GREATER band if Henley had not brought his poison to the table. Very sad actually. Henley was a liberal socialist from the beginning and this in itself caused personality problems with the other band members. Research this for yourself. Excluding Henley,,,,,the Eagles were tremendously infested with talent from the beginning,,,,,,, Vocally and Instrumentally.

It's amazing how many LA rockers were slammed in the 1970s by critics who dismissed all of them as offering bland, overproduced easy-listening yacht music with weak arrangements, when today you have a new generation of critics singing their praises. And now critics' darlings like Bob Dylan now talk about their appreciation for the Eagles . . . ha ha ha, THAT must have shocked Robert Christgau! 😄

How did Joe Walsh “save” The Eagles? The success of that greatest hits album suggests that they weren’t exactly a train wreck with Leadon Terrible take (not by the host)
@stevenmaginnis1965
@stevenmaginnis1965 Год назад
Some critics thought Joe Walsh gave the Eagles a heavier meatier sound and that their sound before he joined was lame. Or as Robert Christgau wrote in his review of 'One of These Nights' - "Put on your neckboots and wade through the slickshit and you may get a kick from the lyrics -- these boys like lotsa malaise with their mayonnaise. But in rock and roll the difference between tragedy and soap opera is usually the acting, here so completely immersed in stringing sings that even the aptest phrases are reduced to the clichés they restate." He gave it a C+.

Bernie was and is incredible. Now... It's generally believed the eagles were stuck in that "sons of the pioneer" genre. Now add the slight changes from the On the Border & One of the nights albums...Bernie was not happy, he wanted to remain Alt country. I'm guessing you know about the beer incident, so...enter Joe Walsh. Walsh and the Eagles both shared Bill Szymczyk as a producer and I think Irving Azoff as manager. Walsh added a blues rock edge to their sound and a huge stage presence! Just watch the Eagles documentary and observe how Frey talks about Walsh. BTW the Hell freezes over reunion was predicated on Walsh being involved by getting sober. I saw Walsh & Frey on tour the year before Hell freezes over reunion. That was Frey getting Walsh back in shape for what what was going to happen. Walsh was and is a beast and absolutely contributory to their success from 1975 to this day. Don't hate on Walsh. Cheers 🍷
