Broke Neville Bruns jaw. Hit Keith Grieg twice in a GF. Destroyed the knee and career of probably the GOAT late in a State of Origin game when the result had already been decided ie Barrie Robran. Matthews was a brutal sniper and thug and should be remembered as such!

I just reviewed the footage and commentary, Matthews full frontal, top pace elbow tackle to Barry Cable's head was described by one commentator as a "dog act". Animosity between the two states was at fever pitch for several years after that, including a period about eight months later at the Australian carnival in mid season 1972. Officials of both sides didn't speak one cordial word to each other for the 10 day duration of the carnival. Matthews had skill but was a long way from being a hero or GOAT in the opinion of a lot of fair minded people.
