Good thing to mention is that the devs are VERY open with communication. Also another huge bonus is that there was one armor set that was miles better then everything else so what did they do? They literally buffed every other set in the game to be as fun as the busted one. So instead of tearing down fun builds they just make new ones for people to try out. A+

Dude, that's like a 40 year old concept that's already been in several far left academic publications for ages. I still have my old college textbook on the history of game design and this distinction was already well noted since before Lord British got shanked. If you want to see discussion about it on youtube then you have to look at the libtard stuff, because the conservative position on art "Stop thinking about it, what the author said goes, there is no deeper meaning to find, no a game where the women is a trophy you have to fight over isn't sexist stop saying that" doesn't lend well to in-depth analysis of any particular media.

You basically assume I’m not exposed to “libtard” stuff. I don’t even use that term. It demonizes the actual original isn’t definition of Liberal (denoting liberty, freedom, individual autonomy) Having been hijacked by the Left to denote “change” even if that change means surrendering individual liberty to big government authoritarianism. Something decided un-liberal. Now, if you wanna set politics aside long enough to discuss the topic I mentioned better identified as “Escapism vs Critical Thought” sure, we can do that. I’m not unfamiliar with the idea. I just like the words he used to describe it in his video. I don't even think it's unique to video games. Its something that can be applied to culture more generally and its a criticism that resurfaces in different ways in specific art forms like music every few years. It's a pretty good game, especially for $40! Despite the bosses constantly spawning ads, there are only a couple that come to mind that were really exhausting to deal with. Most of the ads can be taken out in a 1-3 shots, depending on your gun. At the end of the day, it's more of a challenging "souls like" game solo, but due to how co-op scaling works, it's more of a strategic traditional RPG with a full team of 3. Especially at higher difficulties, you'll start really needing players to fall into specific roles like healer, tank, DPS, as even trash mobs will be able to tank your health considerably. Levelling up seems trivial when you start the game, but as you progress through bosses and dungeons and various achievement-bound challenges, you'll gain a plethora of different traits to level up to a max of 20 points each.

And one of the better ones at that. Saying that this game is Dark Souls with guns is like saying Tetris is the Dark souls of puzzlegames. Just cuz it's Challeging doesn't mean it is like dark souls. I think it's especially great because, despite Yahtzee's clear preference, it doesn't inherently place one above the other. I love games that make me feel things, but sometimes I've had enough of feeling things for a day and just don't have the energy, and I want a game to just help me relax. Personally I'm really enjoying Remnant (heave) from the ashes. Co-op is a fun 3rd person shooter with some slight puzzle solving for secrets and boss gimmicks, and single player is immediately a goddamn horror game. The NOISES man. I'm also really digging that the Devs are clearly in it for the long haul. They've already added a new boss and new game mode since it released and more seems like it'll be coming down the pipe pretty regularly.
@ArcaneAzmadi
@ArcaneAzmadi 2 года назад
I'd given the game some thought as I played through it, but one thing I realised is that the game is ONLY a horror game for the opening stretch on Earth. Once you beat Ent/Singe and reach the Labyrinth (and also get your first boss weapon) the game ceases being scary at all. Rhom and Yaesha just aren't scary, while Corsus can be at worst a bit nerve-wracking and gross. It doesn't start being a horror game again until you're back in Ward 17 for the end boss (or in Ward Prime at the start of the DLC, which plunges right down into full-blown survival horror until you reach Reisum). Frankly, the Root are terrifying enemies, post-apocalyptic Earth is a bowel-clenching environment to explore, and the first chapter of the game when you're still at your weakest is easily the hardest, but it lightens up a LOT after that. Note that this isn't a _criticism,_ just an observation. I think it's a good thing that the game has more than one string to its bow.

I was exploring the second dungeon, which was the one that actually progressed the plot, and I started getting creeped out by the noises when I knew something big was being spawned in, but couldn't actually see it yet. On my way to that second dungeon I also kept getting a bit spooked by various noises. They did nail the noise design for sure. At least we get guns to help us kill whatever scared the shit out of us, lol. I'm finally playing through it and beat my first boss last night. Goreroot or something like that. He kept spawning in those annoying exploding puffball enemies and I'd get stunlocked to death while trying to run and heal. Thankfully on the attempt that I won I got thrown a bone. I'd died by some stairs and the boss was spawned in where I died. Turns out he got stuck in place, lmao. I'd run around avoiding the puffballs when he summoned them, and then go shoot him some more with my hunter rifle that I added that fire bullet mod to. I'll take an easy win given that I'm playing solo and those puffballs were being right shits to deal with. I'm looking forward to the sequel and I like what I've seen of it so far.

I think this brings up a core dichotomy between reviewers and regular players: Yahtzee, and other reviewers, end up doing this for a job. They'd rather have stimulus, so they prefer games that make you feel. Most people play *after* work, to relax. The numbing is the intention. And that's why those games Yahtzee hates so much are so popular.
@AlvarVraal
@AlvarVraal 4 года назад
Sorry for reviving this, but I just saw the review and I was thinking about something along these lines. I think there might be a misinterpretation in what you said, because I believe there is a difference between games that make you feel relaxed vs games that make you numb. I'd argue that the distinction is important, and could very well be used as a stand in for quality.

I think it's more accurate to say that *everyone* can benefit from games that make them feel (reviewers and regular players alike). But regular players certainly don't mind games that make them numb, at least not to the degree that reviewers like Yahtzee hate them.

I wouldn't class soulslikes as a new genre, but it's definitely an extreme shift in the general template of RPG systems. Instead of focusing heavily on numbers and passive/active skills gained through levelling, it relies more heavily on player skill/perceptiveness whilst tying skills to item/weapon use and levelling a rather minimal (yet still very important) aspect.

Funnily enough as a note for those listening, if you level up to a certain degree and then get a weapon or armor piece it does start to scale based on either level or equipment tier. Its not high but picking up a new weapon does not start from scratch later on in the game like this video would Imply. Its also mildly randomized for those of you that like re-playbility al-la dark souls ng+

The boss on the bridge you don't NEED to keep track of. Only one actively targets the player at a time. The other only fires lasers at one section of the bridge at a time, starting at one edge of the bridge and moving one section at a time across until it's covered every section once. Basically move to a spot it already fired a laser at and you can ignore it. When the one targeting you switches, the one you were fighting will fly back out of range to make it obvious you should turn around.

At the beginning of the video it made me think of a book I read. I talks about ideas in literature, and that idea was that there is nothing new in literature. The only thing you can make new in literature is a narrative. Games I think can be applied to a similar concept. A lot of games take influence from one another, inspiration comes from somewhere, no thought in making a game is original, we've been making adventure games, FPS, soulsborne games, racing games, and competitive games for years now, and eventually they intermingle and create "new" things, nothing is new in gaming at the moment, but the only thing that's new is the experience playing them. I do kinda like the idea of defining 'worthy' and 'unworthy' in games as 'stimulating' and 'numbing', especially with the current state of live-service games that all seem to forget making the game interesting in the name of mass-marketability and potentially infinite time investment. I do think however that there is something to be said for what you could consider 'numbing' games that can create like a fun haze. Like Doom (2016) for example, with its haze of constant action. Or slower games that use routine to really build up to something big. For as much as Yatzee hates WoW, the feeling I got standing in the halls of Naxxramas for the first time was truly unique, especially because the routine and simple everyday activities built up it and made it feel truly epic in a way that couldn't excist in another type of game. Not to say that numbing routine games are inherently a good thing, but that developers can use it effectively at times.

Possibly the strangest thing about this game for me was that it's a direct sequel to a VR game (Chronos) which also had dark souls-ish elements to it, but instead of being an over the shoulder shooter was a strange mash of zelda-esque melee combat and a "fixed" camera which works surprisingly well in VR. Sort of like piloting a remote control robot around an elaborate diorama.
