Remote 'Generator' Start. Adding a smart switch to the Phoenix Inverter.

Before we go away for a short holiday break, I have to come up with a solution to remotely turn on and off the Victron Phoenix inverter. The current energy production is not enough to supply sufficient power to the hot water system, and I have to add additional energy from the 2nd battery system through the Phoenix Inverter. I want to do that remotely/automatically without bothering my guests.
So, I came up with this idea to install a small Sonoff Smart Switch in the inverter and control it remotely that way. Will it work?

@@OffGridGarageAustralia I found it easier to bring the PV, from the solar arrays, to the Hybrid inverter, and keep them closer to my hot water heater. Note - I use another hot water heater (in-series), with my AC powered HW heater, which has 48 VDC elements……..best of both worlds 👍
@VincentArdolino
@VincentArdolino 4 дня назад
My office has limited battery capacity but a lot of solar energy. The battery is Not enough to heat water without leaving me powerless. My solution was to automate the water heater based on battery state of charge. As soon as my batteries hit 100% SOC the water heater turns on for 10 min. If after 10 minutes the battery is lower then 90% the water heater turns off, if above 90% the water heater remains on for another 10 min. It repeats this cycle all day with great results. I always have very hot water and my batteries remain charged. Obviously I don’t heat water at night but who cares as long as I have a tank full of hot water.

@ipstacks11 2 дня назад
How did you automate this?
@sparkletornado5890
@sparkletornado5890 2 дня назад
@@ipstacks11 These are my thoughts have something similar, The best way is to use AC out 2 for dump loads based on SOC. You can’t control AC out 2 with node red which is annoying but you can program the relays and use a relay assistant to turn it on. If you connect the dump load to AC out 2 this code will send a 1 or 0 to control the cerbo relay which you can then connect to the relay on the multiplus to turn on AC out 2. Or you can use MQTT to switch a large relay like a tuya or sonoff on the hotwater. There are dozens of ways to solve this problem. ### Explanation: 1. Initialization: The current time and battery SOC are retrieved. 2. Operating Hours Check: Ensures the logic runs only between 6 AM and 6 PM. 3. Turn On Heater: If the SOC is 100% and the heater is off, the heater is turned on, the timer is set for 10 minutes, and `msg.payload` is set to `1`. 4. Heater Running Check: If the heater is on and the timer has expired: - If the SOC is above 90%, the timer is reset for another 10 minutes and `msg.payload` remains `1`. - If the SOC is below 90%, the heater is turned off and `msg.payload` is set to `0`. 5. No Action: If it's outside the operating hours or the conditions to turn the heater on/off are not met, the function does nothing. ------------------------------------------------------------------- var now = new Date(); var localTime = new Date(now.getTime()); var currentHour = localTime.getHours(); var currentMinute = localTime.getMinutes(); // Get the battery SOC value from global context var batterySOC = global.get('SOC') || 0; // Define the heater state and timer end time in the global context var heaterState = global.get('heaterState') || 'off'; var timerEnd = global.get('timerEnd') || 0; // Function to set the timer for 10 minutes function setTimer() { var currentTime = new Date().getTime(); var tenMinutesLater = currentTime + 10 * 60 * 1000; // 10 minutes in milliseconds global.set('timerEnd', tenMinutesLater); } // Function to turn on the heater function turnOnHeater() { heaterState = 'on'; global.set('heaterState', heaterState); setTimer(); msg.payload = 1; // Heater On return msg; } // Function to turn off the heater function turnOffHeater() { heaterState = 'off'; global.set('heaterState', heaterState); msg.payload = 0; // Heater Off return msg; } // Check the current time to ensure it's daytime (between 6 AM and 6 PM) if (currentHour >= 6 && currentHour < 18) { // Handle the heater state based on the battery SOC if (batterySOC >= 100 && heaterState === 'off') { return turnOnHeater(); } else if (heaterState === 'on') { var currentTime = new Date().getTime(); if (currentTime >= timerEnd) { if (batterySOC >= 90) { setTimer(); msg.payload = 1; // Heater remains On return msg; } else { return turnOffHeater(); } } } } // If it's not within the operating hours or the heater is off and SOC is not 100% return null;

The Deye sun inverters and all the clones have this feature build in, if you don't want to start a diesel generator (for some reason, that's the same connection). You can have 12kW (on the 12kW variant) switched on whichever SOC % you want. Ours goes on at 98% end goes off at 95%.

Yep! i have a sainsmart 8 channel relay module driven off an esp32 to do the same thing I'm using in home assistant and node-RED to disconnect the CT limiter of the two GTIL2 inverters in an automated fashion. it kills the output of the inverters without having to cut the AC side (which apparently they don't like) or the DC side with a massive contactor. the inrush current is huge on these things and can trip the short-circuit protection on the BMS so this is far safer than anything else. Shoved it all in a jaycar project box and it has been working flawlessly so far

Hello Andy, great side project! Just did something similar with my semi on Grid hybrid. Noticed that my inverter has about 0.8kWh daily grid consumption. I've added a similar WiFi relay to the grid connection of the inverter(just one of the three phases). When I switch the relay off, it forces the inverter( and the whole house) to proper off grid mode, no more grid drain overnight. Saves about 120kWh a year. I used a simple Tuya compatible relay with the SamrtLife app that has a convenient Sunset / Sunrise option for the timer.

My experience so far regarding hot water from PV, at the moment I stringed in series 5 panels and directly connected to the 240V water heater. This solution broke the relay inside the water heater because of arching, so it stays always on, but it still works (over 5 years now). Next year I will change the water heater and feed it from an inverter dedicated for hot water (no more direct PV connection too risky).

I don't know what your complete setup contains, But we got our hot water from solar tubes. Working kind of flawless since 2012. Way more efficient then using electricity. The only thing is, they need to be cooled constantly. Also in summer, when you don't need the heat. Theoretically, they can handle being switched off, but I am reading about all kinds of issues if you try. In our case we heat up our hot water in the bufferstorage (1m3). If that is hot enough it heats up the central heating water storage (6m3) and if that is also hot enough, we dry our firewood with the exces heat. Same thing with the electricity. If the batteries are full, they first heat the tap water, then the centralheating. If the sun is shining, the batteries are full, the tap and central heating strorages are hot. Then we are drying our firewoodwood with about 30kW. Did you know you can easily light big blocks of oak with just a piece of newspaper? As long as the moisture content is 5% or under. I love the simple industrial temperature relais (like the itc 1000). They never skip a beat.

I'm still don't need that relay in my Quattro but I can switch it via VRM Dashboard. There is a button in the right upper corner which opens a control panel (if activated in the settings).

Oh, my mistake. It is the relay of the Cerbo but not that ont the Quattro, what I'm switching via VRM. But should work also fine, as someone has already mentioned before.

This has never worked for me. I used to see the 'relay' in the VRM but could never remotely turn it on via VRM. Now, I only have the Grid Current Limit and the mode of the MP I can set though the VRM. The relay function has disappeared for a while...
@stephantitze8302

@@OffGridGarageAustralia The relays are only visible and operable if they are set on "manual" function in the settings of the Cerbo . I was wondering, why I can see only relais no. 2. but not no. 1. Reason was, that relais no.1 is set as alarm relay by default. As I have nothing connected to it, I have set it also to manual and now I can operate both of them via VRM. By the way, I have firmware v3.13 on the Cerbo.

Hi Andy, I really enjoy your videos thank you. I have a victron easysolar 2 GX and a Fronius Gen24 and an Alpha ESS smile 5 all on my house and granny flat. Who can help me with making the Fronius and alpha ess display on the VRM? My installer is very new to solar and he is doing what he can but is not sure how to help me. I am looking for ideas. Thanks in advance, Kind regards, Travis

The Fronius is easy. You just need to turn on the API in its settings and have the network IP linked in your easysolar. This will then show up as a PV Inverter in the VRM as it does in my VRM.

CLICK! No hot water for you this evening! Hehe. Send me 0.001 bitcoin to unlock your water heater! This brings to mind the issue of creating inadvertent ground loops with control loops between pieces of equipment. Not in this particular case I think because the relay isolates the contact, but it's a problem that I see (and sometimes perpetrate myself) more often than is healthy. For example, I had a 48V system and a 24V system with an (unintended) common ground through a data cable. That was fine... but then I wanted to connect up a 48V->24V DC-DC (non isolated) with 6 AWG cable to transfer up to 32A between the two systems. When I first connected it up, guess what happened? Yup... the data cable went up in smoke because the ground return path for the power transfer was being shared. Solution... remove the data cable and replace with some relay-driving logic. And also change the DC-DC to be an isolated DC-DC which 100% guarantees the negative-return current path would go over the heavy cable. In anycase, this sort of thing can crop up in all sorts of situations, not just examples like the above. I've gotten into the habit of always checking both current paths, positive and negative, to make sure the same current is on both. -Matt

I don't get why you need the Phoenix inverter and the MP. The MP can directly provide 240V from the batteries. Do you need more power sometimes and that's the reason? Why not a second MP in this case? BTW: Using the Victron integration for HomeAssistant, you can fully control/automate your Victron system. I don't change any settings in Victron directly anymore. I do that all from HA.

I've been wondering that myself for ages and I think it's pretty much as you described. The Phoenix kicks in when there's a lot of demand and uses the energy stored in battery stack to meet that demand This stops the battery shelf from being depleted The more typical solution would probably be to have two Multi plus in parallel and all the batteries in the same DC bus However since Andy has a lot of batteries under test, they can appear and disappear. So this solution is probably better for his use The price difference between a Phoenix and Multi is also big enough that this world be a much cheaper solution for occasional usage

The snag with this is it relies on me being in cell phone coverage, I've had a few occasions recently when I have been working in the local prison and my partner comes home to no power! why not connect all of the batteries to the multiplus? When 2 or more inverters are paralleled, all the batteries have to be on one inverter, at least in Deye inverter land they do. What I have learned so far is the BMSes will deal with the batteries being various capacities by sending more power from the batteries with more capacity to the loads while the batteries with less capacity send less. Maybe you can’t or didn’t want to parallel inverters? I am not familiar with Victron-ese. You have separate charger controllers, so the batteries would get charged regardless of which inverter they are connected to anyway. You’ve connected a Phoenix inverter to the generator port of the Multiplus 2 and I will guess that is for cost savings? Maybe you have this configuration so you can add inverter capacity AND have batteries connected to both inverters? The advantage is the second inverter can add inverter power even when the sun isn’t shining?
