What is really the unfortunate outcome of this remote ID nonsense is how it hurts RC modeler community. If they have a scale replica of a P-51, they have to find a way to attach the module to the outside the plane (hideous) or mount it inside if there is room, as there is virtually no legal place for them to fly otherwise. In my state there are four FRIAs all four are a minimum three hour drive from me. They are really only convenient to either Seattle or Spokane. Some western states don't have any FRIAs at all. So far, the FAA has approved 234 sites, less than five per state. If this were just to regulate drones then RC modelers would not have been included, this is to clear the skies for Amazon and other for profit enterprises. Thank you Congress!!!

Question #3 is almost a trick question. Depending on when the drone was manufactured, you cannot use a module under Part 107. If it was manufactured after 9/1/2023, a drone must have Standard RID built-in by the manufacturer if it is being used for Part 107 work. If it is manufactured after 9/1/2023 and retrofitted with a module, it is not in compliance. This means it must have RID somehow built into either the flight controller code and have the hardware or into the ESC code. In theory, ESC code could be written so the drone doesn't arm if the right data hasn't been provided. . A company like DJI will likely have all their drones compliant because their software is not open source and therefore tamper proof and can have Standard RID built in. This makes it easier for them to get the Declaration of Compliance. Unlike a bind & fly unit that uses open source software. There is no compelling reason for a manufacturer of a bind & fly to build in RID when the FC software can be modified.

What's crazy is that if I'm flying a 30 gram tiny whoop, filming a friend's music video, this is under Part 107 and adding a module would make it unflyable, which means I would need a bigger drone to hold the module, maybe less safe and less agile than a tiny whoop. 🤔

Do you really think if you film this video and your friend post it to RU-vid that someone is going to report it to the FAA on the off chance that the pilot may have not been remote ID compliant? Or maybe the pilot was not licensed under 107? Look for the DIY registration and repo, with some skills, you can create your own for home built drones for a fraction of what they are asking for them. The S3 Arduino module and GPS are less than $25 total. There is no reason for them to be selling for > $250. Stand alone units aren't compliant in the US unless there is an exemption that I don't know about. (No broadcast -> no fly rule) It's my understanding it has to be integrated with the flight controller in the US.. Someone show me where I'm incorrect for the US because they are simple to make and I have the parts already to create all I need for my home built drones.
@AlienDrones
@AlienDrones Год назад
That's a really innovative solution and sounds fun to boot, but in order for it to be legal for home build's I believe the module built would be required to be submitted and have an approved DOC from the FAA. Not that this is impossible, but probably more of a hassle than most are willing to bare.
@geezerpleasers_OG
@geezerpleasers_OG Год назад
PS: The really wacky part concerns sub-250 drones which have optional long life batteries that put them over 250g. For those drones, every time you swap out the lighter batteries and put in the heavier batteries, you have to register them and make them RID compliant, but when you put the lighter batteries back in, you can cancel the registration and turn off RID or remove the module.
@SlackerU
@SlackerU Год назад
If the drone was manufactured with Remote ID then you can't turn it off even with the smaller batteries. I have a Mini 3 with only one battery, therefore I have never been over 250g, yet it has been broadcasting RemoteID & in any emergency it clearly shows a notification that the Remote ID is functioning properly.
@geezerpleasers_OG
@geezerpleasers_OG Год назад
@@SlackerU DJI drones have been broadcasting information about the drone's location, direction, speed, and serial number for at least a decade now, long before Remote ID was even a topic of discussion. There has never been a way to turn that off. The DJI Aeroscope system, which has been installed at major airports all over the US, has been receiving and recording that information the entire time. As for Remote ID, some drones will let you turn it off, some won't. It depends on the maker and the model.
@SlackerU
@SlackerU Год назад
@@geezerpleasers_OG A search says Aeroscope systems were discontinued in the US but still active in Russia. No doubt though that it's probably just secret now as it didn't take two-weeks for plainclothes-randoms to approach me who oddly had aviation backgrounds. I use 5000mah batteries in my drone. I am looking at reducing weight with 3400. I am already just barely over 250g.. But with lesser capacity batteries, I might can get under that with a minimal loss in flight time. But the way I understand this new rule, you still have to have an identification beacon so you can always be tracked as to exactly where you are and where your drone is. Really ... what next? I just think there's too much confusion on where they intend to take this. I first hear it's just to see what, who and where is being flown. However, then I see it's going to be feeding into a mesh network with automation for historical look ups by LEO and the FBI. That's the over-reach, and from an RF perspective the failure. BT and Wifi don't transmit long distances, so unless we're going to have more RID collection points than cell towers, and the back office infrastructure to connect them, manage or store the data, etc. then it's already going to fail. Finally that's really my main beef with RID. If DJI builds it into my drone then I know it meets Title 15 and it's very unlikely to be causing RF issues. However, if I'm adding a module to an FPV drone, how do I know the command link or VTX isn't being affected? There are RF issues when co-locating transmitters, VTX, C2 and RID, and those won't have been tested. FPV drones can and are across multiple frequencies so there's no single answer, like there would be for a DJI type drone that's "plug and play (fly)" in nature. A FPV drone pilot should also be a Ham, and hence, we're expected to know the frequencies and power levels we are transmitting, and any issues it may be causing. We also may be over-reacting though. As I know Part 61 pilots also seem to be spotty in compliance with ADS-B Out. There's been a few cases where I'm flying my Air 2 and there's no information received from the Cessna 172 that's flying by. Should I call the FBI because "I don't know if they're a valid flight or friendly aircraft?" No, I just grumble and continue my flight operation. Send me some swag 107

You can fly recreationally under part 107 and you can fly recreationally under 44809. Both of them are viable, but part 107 "recreational" is simply semantics, meaning you are flying for fun, not performing a "commercial" mission at that moment. You can fly under part 44809 (even if you are a part 107 certified pilot) you just need to take the trust test, follow recreational rules including the rules of a CBO and if sub 250g, remove the part 107 registration number from your drone. If the drone is above 249g then to fly 44809, technically you would need to deregister the drone from your part 107 fleet, add the RID number to DroneZone and apply your 44809 (recreational) registration number to the drone.

I do have one question, actually... If the drone doesn't need to be registered (less than 250g) and is being flied recreationally, but I have gone ahead and registered it anyway and applied the FAA registration number to it, does it then need remote ID? Thanks.
@WR3ND
@WR3ND Год назад
It would seem counterproductive to all intents to need to unregister a drone to be able to fly it without Remote ID. 🤔 But maybe that's just me. 🤷‍♂
@SlackerU
@SlackerU Год назад
If you're flying under-250g recreationally without Remote ID then you'd probably not want registration numbers written on the outside of the drone. If it is a Remote-ID certified DJI then the serial number is the RID number so it'd already be in your registration, I think.
@WR3ND
@WR3ND Год назад
Thanks. This isn't a hypothetical question for me. The drone is a DJI Mini SE, which is not remote ID compliant (unless there's a firmware update looming that I'm unaware of), and is less than 250g. I feel a bit more secure having it registered with the recreational registration number on it and in the event that it was lost or similar, it might be able to be recovered and accounted for. I'm not trying to get away with anything with it and only intend to use it responsibly and in accordance with recreational guidelines. I think it is critically important that we keep the viability of the recreational aspect of the hobby and not feel threatened into becoming commercial UAS pilots, at least for those that clearly by common sense standards aren't and don't intend to be. So, hence my question. Cheers.
@SlackerU
@SlackerU Год назад
@@WR3ND It will probably never be RID compliant b/c even the FPV only offers Remote-ID-Support b/c it can't 'broadcast' therefore can't get US-certified. It's probably why the Mini 4 is coming out so soon as the 3 PRO is only 'RemoteID-Friendly'. My Mini 3 is definitely broadcasting b/c it lets me know with on-screen notifications, I get 24 minutes of hover or 20-22 minutes of Sport-mode playing under-250g.

I recall that the FAA was chomping at the bit to regulate UAVs but they were explicitly restricted from taking action. I see a safe drone act from 2015 and it made it out of committee but as far as I can tell, it was not voted on. Also, it was related to flying in a newly designed "restricted zone" defined as being with 2 miles of an airport or any temporary airspace that the govt indicates needs to be restricted. I think I'm missing something. I thought that in order for remote ID to be transmitted it had to go through your phone internet. It is sounding from what you say that it is actually transmitted locally. Anyhow, so go ahead and send me some swag hahaha and let's do 111!!

Indeed, remote ID is currently a local broadcast coming from the drone or a module, Bluetooth or WiFi. No internet is used at this point. It was initially proposed to require internet when the UTM was being proposed, but that requirement was dropped from the rule for now.

The DJI FPV drone just had a firmware update on August 31st, that makes it compliant with remote ID. I just installed it on mine last night and the status now says that it's working properly. Now I have to go to the FAA drone zone and update my registration for that drone.
@SlackerU

@@YellowRoseDrones I want one but sadly you're mistaken & it's not Remote ID Compliant to the newest RID standards. I asked DJI the other day & was told I still need to attach a RemoteID module to the DJI FPV in order to be FAA compliant. From what I read online the RID on their FPV doesn't 'broadcast' so they can't get compliance.

I enjoyed your presentation.. however, I am in disagreement with your "Karen" scenario for several reasons: Reason 1: To preface it with a "Karen" as a viewer of a potential rogue drone was.. well-biased. I am a Part 107 aviator and I view any and all spectators of my drone operations (Karens included) rather as "non-participants", not nusiances to my operation. Reason 2: If you are operating commercially, even for improving skills, parks.. backyard.., etc. You should have given advanced notice for doing this through means of "preflight validation". Example: Notice to the management/ownership of the flight path, B4UFLY, signage posting, wearing of a safety vest, all drones equipped with bright navigation lights/FAA ID, and the use of visual observers supporting the same. I try and approach it this way, the more I "pre-educate" the users of the ground in/around a flight path, the less interference with my use of the air ✌ Reason 3: I'm thinking..., the FAA purposely and with forethought is inviting the public to interact anonymously with drone operators via RID because they don't have enough "eyes" to police what will become hyperactive "low-altitude" airspace. Consider the cost savings (nationally) for not having to construct, operate, and train operators of "Droneports" versus R.I.D. modules at the expense of the operators... Hmmmmmm 🤔? Now let me be clear. We drone operators (Part 107) will always need to be prepared to define/defend our "drone presence" if questioned by law enforcement, FAA officials, or the curious "parallel observer" to your operation. It really should be expected and in most respects welcomed. See it as an opportunity to explain the drone profession or express your ability to safely operate the SUAV. If there is a viable threat to your operation, delay or delete it. I think there are other options as well if prepared ahead of time. I have operated "commercially" in the S. Eastern corridors for about a year now. I have experienced (0) zero negativity or threat to my person or my drone. Instead, I have had multiple opportunities to give some parents and their children a "short lesson" on drone safety and drone craft. Also, some I suppose (potential Karens), stopped by my flight "home area".. asked questions, viewed the layout, and then thanked me for giving them a minute. I see it as part of the "re-education" effort knowing drones have been given a "bad rep" from illegal or illegitimate use, and the media happily reporting this. Again, enjoyed your presentation, just wish it had a different "tone". We need everyone (including Karen) to understand, appreciate, and welcome the presence of drones 🥰in our lives, it seems both are here to stay!
@AlienDrones
@AlienDrones Год назад
Hey, no worries, I appreciate and understand your perspective! We wish the tone could be different as well, however, we will agree to disagree and make no apologies for our content. We have also had many great experiences with the curious in general. Many! But, our perspective is not biased but more fully informed by experiences that you have not yet experienced that I truly hope you will _never_ be forced to personally endure as a drone pilot. However, once you are targeted by violent and/or ill meaning non-participants as we have it will change your perspective of the _possible_ experience. It's scary as hell and nearly made us hang up our remotes. Unfortunately, remote ID by design makes this negative experience _more_ likely, not less. We are not a "tinfoil hat" fringe either, this concern has been corroborated by law enforcement itself many times formally to the FAA that it adds additional potential danger to citizens. We agree that RID is here to stay, however disagree that we have to ignore or be accepting of the new dangers and negative aspects it also adds to an otherwise great hobby and feel it would be a disservice to not reflect our actual experiences and concerns in our content. Remove the ability for the general public to legally locate and track other citizens via RID and leave that ability to law enforcement or FAA and the tone of RID videos will change to indifference, to be sure. Good Flying! 😎👽

Can a 107 pilot legally fly a recently home built?
@AlienDrones
@AlienDrones Год назад
That's a good question, and I think officially the answer might be no. I believe it has to be manufactured with standard remote ID and has to have an approved DOC with the FAA to be legal. So you'd have to submit your model to the FAA and get it approved to strictly follow the rule... I'm sure someone with more FPV experience might have more information, just my take on the rule itself...
