I’m a 67-year-old woman. This time last year I built a shed pretty much on my own because of what I learned from you. The only help I needed was to raise the walls and my grandkids wanted to help me with the simple projects. They were pretty proud of their grandma. It felt so rewarding to know I finished the shed, it’s still standing (LOL), has no leaks and it looks good. I’m already thinking about another structure to build. Your wife Brooke inspires me. You teach me. I thank both of you so much!
You go girl! I’m a beginner ish diy girl and at 56 I’m amazed at what I’ve accomplished! Now I want to build a cabin! Luv these videos and how exciting about your shed!! Great and inspiring!!
You are an inspiration to this almost 59-year old! (day after Christmas.) I too love the satisfaction of doing my own building as well, and hope to be keepin' on keepin' on when I'm your age and beyond, as is also my wish for you! Keep it up!
Wow!! You're amazing! I'm the girl half of this team and our experience has been so awesome I can hardly believe it! Who would have thought... Good going! Now I've got to follow you to check out your story! 🙌
Probably the best Ryan's Shed Plans on building a shed is hardly found ever . ru-vid.comUgkxcLVQopTIucrxiVRQA0khLGQEnDVKCSMG And Ryan's takes the mystery out of different types of foundation options, etc. He even shows how to build shed with different designs. Very comprehensive, covering different roofing materials, siding, etc.
This dude has inspired me to put a bit of scratch aside little by little, buy a little plot of land and build a cabin on it. I've thought about buying a telescope, but who needs that if the entire sky is stars?
Same here man, I think for my first house I'm gonna find a plot of land, and do almost exactly what he did. I could totally live in something like this for a few years
Same. I am 33 years old and all I want in this world is a small plot of land in the mountains to build a cabin/homestead on. Modern society is not for me. I want to go back to this way of life.
You’re not fat, you’re burly. This build was fun. My friend asked, has he done this before?” I said, “ yep, a few times.” You’re like watching a mighty conductor leading a symphony and nuanced and fluid with every step in the process.. You are simply amazing, Dave. Thanks for taking us along.
I just want you to know that videos by you. This one in particular. Convinced me to decide to build a cabin of my own very similar to this instead of an expensive foundation home. It made me realize more minimalist homes like this deserve a resurgence. Because, especially in remote areas. They are truly the best way to live. Sincerely, the now 24 year old, debt free, self sufficient man you helped create. Thank you.
Is your attitude in the direction of man's advancement as thinking is our nature? Or is you attitude based on bring mankind back to a primitive existence? "Sincerely, the now 24 year old, debt free, self sufficient man." So was the caveman.
@EarthSurferUSA My attitude is that you shouldn't confuse advancement with materialistic possession. And that if we deprogram the idea of a 5 bedroom 4 bathroom $900,000 dollar house being necessary to "advance" and begin to live modestly. We will shift our focus on the things that truly matter in this world. Whatever that may be in our own minds. Consumerism and being better than the person next to us has invaded the subconscious of a large portion of America as of late. Especially as technology advances. I think your misunderstanding of my point doesn't come from a position of misunderstanding itself. But possibly more from a confusion between the words "primative" and "minimalist" because my cabin is larger (35×30 with 9 foot ceilings and a loft and a 16×30 foot porch to be more precise. But I built it all on family land. I did it piecemeal, bit by bit, and I did it without taking out strenuous mortgages that will put me and my soon to be fiancé in debt for the next 30 years. I built bigger because we want children. I built with HVAC. Because I live in Texas and summers can be in excess of 100° for weeks on end. But my house is simple when compared to most homes. That doesn't make me a Neanderthal. It makes me and my wife to be people that understand that sometimes some cattle and a modest home with people that love you are more important than the price tag on the things around you. THAT is the direction my attitude is in.
@EarthSurferUSA I'd venture to ask, as someone who clicked on, and hopefully watched this video in its entirety. What is your view on it? Do you think simple homes advance us and let us focus on more important things. Or do you think modernity helps us stave off "primative" habits?
Its a lot of work, and double the cost for subflooring not to mention time, I'd tyvek or reflectix under the joists, (something breathable would be nice) and then just put in the insulation from the top if you even needed the extra R value.
What an absolute therapy is this. Side effects of chemo are getting really heavy to take on to, but then it is videos as this which makes me be positive about future. Hard to believe something this simple can be this amazingly up-lifting. Thanks a lot for sharing this video with us.
I don't know which is more impressive, that you built a cabin by yourself or that you didn't have a thousand sheets of paper with measurements and directions flying all over the place. You are an inspiration.
@@haydencourtney7419 Circular saw,---built by man's nature. by our nature, we are smarter than Beavers. If we were as free as Beavers, we would have built a lot more by our nature. Man is part of nature too, or we would not be here.
Dave, what a great attitude and demeanor you have man. I don't normally watch 50-minute videos on off-grid cabin builds but I have to say your sense of being one with nature, your calmness, and your skill had me hooked. Good job!
These cabin building compilation videos with your insightful voice-over are always a pleasure to come back to on occasion. They're very soothing and calming to watch and listen to, especially for when I have downtime in this stressful period of my life from roughly the beginning of 2019 until now. While I personally would never attempt or do something of this nature let alone achieve something of this magnitude and great on my own, I still enjoy learning about and observing people's various lifestyles and what they value and cherish in life, and your authenticity and rustic living has rubbed off on me in a positive way; appreciating the simple things in life and finding worth and use out of seemingly worthless objects and abandoned items. Also, I can relate to your disdain and reluctance towards the procedure of insulation; I dislike doing stuff that is mundane and tedious in life that is similar to what insulation is like for people in the construction and craftsmanship industries.
As a child I lived in some really bad houses. When I learned how to frame up a lumber, I was amazed at what I could do, and thought how some people don’t believe in their selves to even try. DIY channels helped, and so does y’all’s take and step by step, prepare and go for it. Inspiration to live the best life you can in the woods where nobody wants to put forth the effort. Get connected folks to life .
That cabin is beautiful enough to motivate anyone to build it. Probably a little bit pricier than your "cabin anyone can build", but definitely worth it.
My brother and I loved watching and discussing your content. Unfortunately he passed away a few weeks ago and this is the first video of yours I've watched since his passing. It's bittersweet, but it reminds me of him and the time we got to spend together. Thank you for everything you do.
So sorry for your loss. I lost my husband on October 27 so I can relate. We live out in the country and enjoyed watching these videos to help us learn how to build and do for ourselves. So hard now trying to learn to live without him. You're in my prayers. 💙
Примите, соболезнование!❤Это печально когда уходит частица сердца и души с близкими людьми, как и печально, когда по злой воле больных политиков гибнут люди
Here's what I love about your videos - your storytelling, I just love your enjoyable, engaging style, the builds themselves, yes you make them seem attainable, not easy, not impossible, and more work with your hands than emptying your pockets; your guitar playing in the background is great, seamless, easy to take for granted but is a perfect way to sew the whole video together. Like any good maker, it all seems to just happen, but so much goes into it, the doing, filming, editing and I always come away feeling similar to reading a good book, entertained as well as educated and those are two of my favorite things. Thank you so much, Dave Whipple, you rock!
Hej I agree with you love this RU-vid channel and it is very relaxing to watch his videos. And it's almost like you're camping yourself when you watch his videos take care and have a nice week.
This is one of the coolest guys in America. Super chill, great attitude, self-sufficient, confident, and isn't afraid to show that he is praying to God. Beautiful cabin, looks like an ideal spot.
lol. Why would be afraid? Ridiculous fictional oppression. Christians are still very much a large majority in the world. Try being a black atheist lesbian.
Agreed. It is so inspiring to watch Dave and Brooke build. My dad was this type of person who could build anything, and I have always truly admired that. And as you say, I love to watch Dave in this video simply bow his head and acknowledge his gratitude. Simplicity and serenity at its very best. :)
It is so satisfying to watch. My grandfather and my father were both master carpenters. To this day, I still love the smell of lumber, and I can just imagine what this smells like. Just beautiful. ❤
All your videos have been an inspiration. Me and my brother bought property here in WV where we grew up and are starting a couple off grid cabin builds next month. Just wanted to say thanks for all the great information and ideas!
Been collecting up materials and going to be starting my cabin this spring.. Thanks for the inspiration bush probably wouldn't have ever tried if I hadn't watched your videos.. excited to see your new cabin.. 👍
I love watching you build Dave. Learn a lot of techniques. At 61 years old I build my first 12 X 16 cabin in the woods. Love that space. You are so strong lifting those walls!!! What a great cabin you’ve built. ❤🎉
Such a knowledgeable and talented guy! I stumbled on some of your building and couldn't pull away...it was therapeutic! I'm a older guy so some of it is beyond my ability, but could envision the whole process as you went along. I think you have a very important tool some of us may not have..."PATIENCE". It is a pleasurer to view your work, thanks for sharing...🙂
Dave, love your cabin builds especially your peaceful demeanor while doing so. I'm nearly 70 yo now and have built many structures in Colorado and New Mexico so I can relate to the pleasant atmosphere of building in the woods. Thanks for these builds of yours for my trip down memory lane. Keep up the fine work, sir, and say hi to Brooke for me.
Yeah I was just thinking about how I was at twenty years old, I was high energy just trying to fly through projects with an attitude. I'm 42 now and alot calmer so I have to laugh at how I used to operate
I love these videos. I can't even hammer a nail straight but it's so relaxing. You and Brooke are 2 of my favorite RU-vidrs!! Thanks so much for sharing this process, it never gets old
I had a 911 moment in 2019. I put a cabin on my property in the country. I'm glad I did as friends and relatives needed a break from the city during the riots and the madness. Best guest house investment.
Dave - you have such a beautiful way of working. It comes so effortlessly to you! I envy that. Thanks for the inspirational video. Many tips and tricks learned here! 💛
Thank you My Friend… Memories of my Grandfather’s Place in… Shingleton, MI (Poplar Bluff Cabins) He taught My Dad & My Dad taught Me…. …doesn’t get any better than that… …and thank you for teaching Everyone 😊 “Thanks for the ride” 🙏🏻💟☮️
Dave,I've been here the whole time. I watched you build your whole cabin from start to finish. Their might be some people that are jealous because you build so many cabins in the woods but I say if you own alot of land go for it. Its your property ,do as you wish. I watched Brooke build her cabin and I love hers just as I'll love you cabin. A fire is nice on a cold snowy day. I watch your channel whenever your on and I watch Brookes channel also. Thank you for sharing this video. Love it. P.S. Don't forget ,get out and get happy.
I'm 66 and am about to get my second hip replacement. When I get it done in February, I should be recovered by Spring, and it will be JUST in time for me to make one of these getaway cabins, on property we own, deep in the Maine woods. I will be a hero to my wife, and I will have Dave Whipple to thank. Thanks so much for all your videos, Dave. I know you don't put many out now, so I REALLY look forward to each one. THIS one was great, and was a true inspiration!! I'm about to watch it again!
This is awesome. Hearing the cracking noise from bonfire must be a great. I remember when I was little my dad used to make bonfires like that. The warmth it brings on a cooler day can’t be beaten.
Dave,I just love your cabin build video’s, and your wonderful commentary! They and you are thoroughly inspiring and enjoyable. Your experience, wisdom and skill are a treasure! Thank you,be safe and please continue! God bless!
Outstanding! you have answered a lot of my questions on insulating the floor, walls and showing construction skills. You make it so easy with just a few tools, a true craftman. Love your comments on working, it is rewarding and therapeutic. Great job, thank you for sharing and enjoy that beautiful cabin.
Thanks Dave! I appreciate your videos and how realistic your approach is to off grid building. You and your documentaries inspire and encourage me to do the same. Best to you and Brooke. 👍
been following you and girl in the woods for a long while now and it's always refreshing to sit down and see a post from you two. Thanks for filming your work and for the vo.
I love the videos you & Brooke put out! Very informative, but also showing you can create/produce projects in a way the rest of us could replicate if we so wished! What I love most is the beautiful scenery of woods & water! I may not get to watch them the very first day, especially in this busy holiday season, but watch them I do. Thank you both & stay safe & blessed!
David, thanks for sharing this video. I grew up in Northern Minnesota and grew up building all kinds of farm buildings, sheds etc. I enjoyed watching the start to finish build on this project. Nice and rustic and well suited for your remote area. I'm 77 years old and have lived in the West for the last 50+ years and appreciate watching your videos. I would like to share one pointer that I noticed right at the end when you were installing the wood stove. I learned this growing up around wood burning heaters. When you put the verticle sections of the stove pipe on the inside of the cabin, make sure the inside pipe flange is facing downward on the inside of the pipe below so that any creasote that might condense would run back into the fire and burn up. This keeps the pipe looking clean above the stove keeps the fumes to a minimum inside the cabin. Thanks again. Bernie
I must say seeing brooks face back then it makes me happy to see how much things have changed for you guys Continue making the best content And yeah today everyone needs a cabin in the older days it was home
You are such and inspiration. Three years ago I started volunteering with Habitat for Humanity building houses so that I could start to develop skills to do something like this build. Thank you for all you do and everyone out there should consider volunteering with a local Habitat. It has been the most rewarding thing I have done in my life. I do time lapse videos of our build days and now if I would only post them on my channel, maybe more folks will get an idea of what it entails and come join in on the fun. Cheers
Just watch this to relax and I'll learn something along the way. I built a wooden cabin in the Black Forest last year and there is always something to do. You present it in a relaxed, pragmatic and almost poetic way. You can feel the fire and the smell of the fir wood. Best regards from Germany.
Hey Dave I really enjoyed this video it has made me relies how simple and enjoyable life can be with a small piece of land and a little help from a friend like you showing us the way it’s done. Sincerely Thank You ❤
Beautiful carpentry and workmanship. If I ever needed a cabin built id definitely hire someone that takes pride in completing things done right the first time and wants it done right. Awesome cabin. Cheers sir
I built custom homes in chicago every winter for 25 years. Im a master carpenter. After watching this video, I gotta tell you that I would be happy to build a house or a cabin with You. Your a very good framer!
Thanks so much for detailing this entire process. Based on yours and Brooke's videos, I built a 8 x 6 shed with some of the techniques you both used...in the middle of DC...with a small Mazda 3 to transport all of the lumber. Your can-do attitudes are very inspiring so thank you both.
I love how you put those cabin posts in, packing the dirt down around them. My dad taught me to do that, and it's really served me well. I've never seen anyone else do that. I've got posts in the ground that I put in that way 50 years ago, and they're still standing strong. Thanks for this video and best of luck to you.
Very nice to see some thing of you Dave. Haven’t watched it yet but I’m sure it’s going to be an epic video. I always love watching you and Brooke and it always gives me warmth in my heart. God bless you and your whole family stay safe and healthy❤️🙏
I love that little triangle square you use I have the same one and use it for every project, crazy but I don’t think I could do a job without it. Thank you for the education.
Dear Mr. David, what is therapeutic is the way you talk, the way you build, and the way you explain concepts so that they look easy although they require a lot of skill. A great teacher! Thank you very much for all your time!
There are many, many off grid cabin building videos here on you tube and I have not seen all but I have veiwed many and I have to say that Dave;s are by far and away the standard and by far the most entertaining of all I have seen. Loved this one. Especially since it is located in the state of Superior! Thank you Dave for sharing.
i got all of my stuff into my new apartment and i was watching this while organizing, it felt really satisfying to see your cabin tidy up nicely at the same time my room did. after a few weeks of working and having to move around my stuff just to sleep, i finally had a day off and decided to knock the clutter out i dont have a remote cabin, but i do have one heck of a clean, spacious room, couldnt be more thankful right now
Hell I have a 35 acre farm in Kentucky for less then a 3 bedroom apt would cost. I'm still 15 mins to anything important. People look at life wrong and think we all need to live on top of each other. Idk what I'd do if I had neighbors watching me piss off my back porch 😅
So enjoyable to watch your building as a former architect {now retired} it's great to see someone build in such a basic way....BTW, I love T-111. Enjoy it all....
I throughly enjoy your, and Brooke's videos Dave! I find them very relaxing, informative, and down right peaceful. The easy music in the background is also very relaxing. Thank you both for sharing some of the best videos on youtube. God Bless y'all.
Love your videos!!! Been watching for a few years. Now I am watching from my own cabin i built last summer, with the jotul F602 hot in the corner!! Thanks for being such an inspiration!
