Living in Denmark, we love green apples. Especially the type called Golden Delicious. The cold weather means that everything that grows here takes a long time to ripen before it can be harvested. But this is a good thing, as it increases the natural sugar content of fruits and berries.

If you ever get the chance to eat a "Johnny Gold" you must try one! They are crossed between a red Johnathan and a Golden Delicious. They have the crisp of the Johnathan but the juice and tart/sweet taste of the Golden Delicious. They grown them in the foothills here in Northern CA and when harvest time comes around, we have a family friend who has an orchard to the north of us and we buy them by the crate each year. They really are the very best eating apple out there.

I think people take for granted how much more joy there is to be had in life when trying a new fruit with your friends can lead to such insightful, humorous, and enjoyable conversation. Complicated, expensive meals at Michilin restaurants don't have this effect in our "developed" countries. Modernity seems to dull the human experience. Which leads to people like me living vicariously through RU-vid channels where I can see other people simply being human. ❤

If they ever come to Portland, OR, in the spring, we could take a day trip to Hood River Valley for the Blossom Festival, when you can drive through the valley to see fields and fields of blossoming trees. It's one of the best of our fruit-growing areas. Apples everywhere. Plus peaches, pears, apricots, nectarines, hazelnuts, and so many others I can't remember them all. Our neighboring state, Washington, produces the most apples of any state in the US, but we make a good try too. 😄 (We produce the most cane berries and hazelnuts.) They need to go to an apple tasting, where they can try 20 or 30 varieties of apples in one go. Those they ate must be Granny Smiths, which are wonderful. I make pies with them, mostly. We tend to sneer at Red and Golden Delicious. They may have started deserving their names, but they've been bred so much since for long storage and travel life, they're now lousy apples. Mealy flesh, thick skin so they don't bruise easily, and nearly tasteless compared to a really good apple. Especially Red Delicious. Its popularity here was a triumph of advertising. Ad companies kept whanging away on the idea that the best apples are bright red, so people think red = the best. Not when it's a Red Delicious! Good apples come in several colors; red means nothing. LOL, sorry, I'm a bit of an apple nut...and I hate Red Delicious.

There was a little bit of an error in the captions - raw does not mean "not ripe yet", it means uncooked. A raw fruit could be ripe. We simply use "unripe" to describe fruit that hasn't ripened yet. Apples ripen in the late summer/early fall, but they become much sweeter after experiencing a hard frost before being picked. I have an apple tree in my backyard and we prefer them sour for making applesauce, but they are much nicer to eat straight after they've gone through that frost. There are lots of varieties of green apples. There are also yellow and pink apples. You mentioned that these trees would need to be protected but - The USA used to have hundreds of varieties of apples (all colors), but during the 1920s prohibition, many of the trees were cut down and destroyed to prevent people from making alcoholic cider. Finding an old tree that survived this is quite a treat! Green Apple flavoring of drinks and candy is very popular in the US. You can see why! It can also be called Sour Apple when referring to flavor. The actual apples are just called green apple or by whatever variety they actually are. Besides the health benefits you mentioned, eating apples also cleans your teeth! The browning of the apple after you cut it is because it's being exposed to oxygen (oxidation). It doesn't hurt it at all, or really affect the flavor, but if you don't like the way it looks a bit of lemon juice will prevent it from turning brown. The oxidation won't give you diarrhea, but eating too many apples will!

They are good for cooking you can make a nice apple mash, to to accompany pork with mustard and lemon, made in the oven, it contrasts the salty and sour taste . Or as a dessert, you wash them well, then do tiny cuts around "the waist" of each apple, then with a carver or small spoon make a hole were the pendulum is, the stick, then put some vanilla extract drops inside that hole ,a little piece of butter and I like them with a square of quince (it isn't jelly it's a harder sweet,, here we used to eat those types of sweets (quince, sweet potato, sweet potato and chocolate) with a piece of cheese) Is like cooked and mush sweet made of quince, you add that to each apple put them in an oven fountain, left some space between them and then Sprinkle sugar on top, add a sweet wine like Oporto (it is used to make dessert) or some wine really sweet, and to the oven , middle heat, you have to watch them til they are cooked (when they turned gold) but you need to adjust the Temperature so they don't burst, that's why we make those tiny cuts before, and you might have to add some more wine or water if it starts to evaporate,so when you finished, all the wine and sugar and juice left like a sauce to eat with the apples, you let all cold down , I eat them fridge cold, and you can add some whipped cream with the apples, try to use real whipped cream (whipped with sugar and some vanilla drops)

How terribly sad! Granny Smith's have been my favorite all my life and they've never even heard of them.

The tall guy basically quoted 'An apple a day keeps the doctor away'. Far out.

Just goes to show, the most commonplace things we take for granted could be exotic delicacies to someone else.
