Really enjoyed this walk. The climb up Steeperton from the Oke Tor direction gets the heart going. Great views all the way - your camera work is so good, just a little fast for me (I like to drink in the scenery). Really enjoying what you’ve done during the pandemic.
We’re trying this route out tomorrow and over the weekend for a wild camp ⛺️. Wanted somewhere in the wilderness and this video has helped massively Trev. Amazing views. Will keep an eye out for the sunny glasses 🕶 . You never know
We did this a year ago. It was one of our first proper adventures, ie we set off and had a few ideas but nothing concrete. Really enjoyed it. Love Watern Tor, just amazing.
Have you been shielding, Tony? It hs been nice to be able to get to the moor... Haven't ventured too far myself really, but am getting a bit more adventurous with the walks now that they have given ok to unlimited excersise.... still social distancing though! Thanks for watching. Take care!
I did a walk similar to this last weekend. Such a lovely place to get out to. I wanted to get over to the letterbox after getting over to hanginstone hill but going off piste was near impossible to walk with the huge mounds of grass and bog.
Great stuff, really enjoying your channel after finding it. It has inspired me to go to Dartmoor and wild camp, when we are allowed. Keep up the good work.
Mate that's fantastic footage, that light early in the morning is something else. Dartmoor really is a special place. You'll have to educate me on some of your filming and editing techniques one of the days. I love watching your stuff.
Thanks very much, Gordon - it did make it well worth the early rise to capture that opening sky. I am hoping to knock together a vid on editing vids at some point (when I get round to it) so watch this space. Cheers for watching!
A beauty of a walk indeed... I like how the stones on Watern Tor are stacked like cookies... And here I thought you had the moor to yourself until you got to hangingstone.
Such a very beautiful & very special place* I am glad you made a point of mentioning ( even though it was a lovely sunny day ) places of remoteness , should never be taken in a blasé way. I remember watching Wiltshire Man on a wee holiday with friends ( I think it was Dartmoor) , if not Exmoor & they were saying how the grass/marsh land can float in "turf islands" & horse was known to have disappeared under. Doesn't even bear thinking about. Even with scary stories like this , I do believe I have fallen in love with Dartmoor & hope to visit in my life time :-)
Another stunning walk and an excellent video / photographs. I have to say that without you (and people like you) I wouldn't get to see sights like this on a regular basis so thank you very much indeed. Some really interesting rock formations and speaking of rocks, there are some areas (the Kinder Plateau is one) where the rocks interfere with hand held GPS units and compass. Is Dartmoor similar? Keep safe, keep healthy and keep sane. Cheers. Ken
Hi Ken - yes, someone has recently told me that the granite on Dartmoor effect the compasses, so will be baring that in mind. Cheers for watching, a good little early stroll this one. Thanks for watching!
Hi Trev One word 'Stunning' . Will definately be visiting this area in the future Thanks for sharing.Havent been able to get up on the Moor of late and so watching this is the next best thing Great filming of the Unique rock formations Dont know if you ever watch Jim Holden on youtube but he hashis way of showing of interesting landscape and thats what I think you managed to do in this episode brilliant
Cheers Pete - really glad that you enjoyed the video - this part of the moor is absolutely breathtaking. I never thought much of Steeperton the first time I went there in the fog, but that view back towards Belstone... money just cannot buy that kind of view. Cheers for watching!
Really like your videos dartmoor is such a beautiful place just came back from a 2 night hike around fernworthy forrest already cant wait to back out there.
Thanks very much - taken a while to finally achieve this quality in my editing software.... so many settings, its been a real trial and error. Thanks for watching!!
Hi Trevor, I noticed the walk goes through a Ministry of Defence area. Are there certain times of the year when you can’t enter these areas? Many thanks
Hi Justine, you want to check the firing times - its Okehampton ranges you go through so if you were to google 'Dartmoor firing times' you should be able to find the table for the dates you are considering!
Cool video Trev, again really well made, all really nice Tor’s and the perfect day to be up early & have the moor to yourself. That’s one of the biggest draws to wild camping for me, when everyone has disappeared back home and you have it to yourself and as early an morning you want, love it! Can’t wait until we get the green light! Thanks for showing the pic & take it steady. Wilf L
Cheers Wilf - yeah, it was a acracking morning to get out on my own, and I couldn't believe how busy(ish) it got at Hangingstone Hill.. not a problem just funny as that was where I was going to stop for a sandwich lol. I can't wait to get back out for a camp either, I think Watern Tor is going to be one of my next pitch. Thanks for watching, and thank you for sending in your pics.
Summit Or Nothing yeah that is typical just when you wanted a bite to eat & a brew in peace! We were out yesterday and couldn’t believe how many people were about. It’s nice to plan for the first camp out and Watern Tor looks lush, I’m going to pluck for Steeperton I think as that view down the valley towards Belstone is a view that sticks in my mind from one of my first few camps so it’ll be nice to go back, only problem is I think it’ll be busy when they lift the ban but hey ho. Cheers
@@SummitOrNothing You took the thought straight out of my mind. I thought if I was ever to venture that way, I would choose that Tor for a Wild Camp, very interesting rock formations
As you came from oke tor down the the bottom of steeperton By the stream i thought you might of done a bit on the old mine to your right of the path Trev, another great video this video reminds me of a walk me & a photographer buddy done few weeks ago 8 tors in all finishing at belstone cleave after the stone circle at white moor. thanks for another great video :)
I'm not really up on the history of things, Andy - more about the stomp if I'm honest, wasn't really aware what is about. Its a great area though and full of history if you know what you're looking for. MAybe I should start researching a bit more here and there. Thanks for watching!
Yes there are plenty of places to park near the start - enter Dartmoor via Okehampton Camp and you can park just under Rowtor or for rhis walk I parked at teh carpark just by the ford before you reach East Okement Farm
Yeah, I know the rehashes aren't for everyone, but something I have wanted to do... still trying to vary the channel with new stuff too. Glad that you enjoyed this video. Thanks for commenting!
Hi Trev, I did this walk today. A sunny day but a bit soggier underfoot than last Sunday’s charity hike. Nice to get up to Steeperton, Wild and Watern Tors! Couldn’t find your sunglasses 😂. I was tempted to try going to Ripportor but it looked a bit too marshy, so circled back to go up Hangingstone Hill.. My feet were pleased when I spotted my car at the end! Summit or Nothing 😎
Awesome Pete. A great, yet definitely remote part of the moor to explore and yep, some boggy spots along the way.. Watern Tor is really something else isn't it?
@@SummitOrNothing Defo a remote part of the moor Trev, and loved Watern Tor, had a craving for pancakes up there (strange eh?!😊). Seems to be more cows out grazing now this time of year, so it was a case of dodge the bog and the cows!
Another gorgeous day Trev and I know things have been tough for everyone, in this lock down but man, we have been blessed with some lovely weather, which sets the scene beautifully for the stunning scenery you had on Dartmoor. Great to see the wild ponies again and I was surprised at how boggy it was in certain areas up there. Not too keen on the cows up there mind, I hate the bloody things, again, surprised they were up there as well. Looks like it ended being real hot, with your gradual disrobing 😱.......Great walk out again, cheers Alan
Yeah, the weather has been absolute gold. Good to see a bit of rain this week though as it was all getting a bit too dry. But enough of that, more sun now please haha! I know you have a fear of cows... they are ok when standing around, its when they are charging that you have to worry. Thanks for watching!
Another great video Trev. I was out today, short trek Emsworthy Mire, settlements, Holwell Tor, Holwell quarry, old tramway to Haytor quarry, Haytor rocks, saddle tor, then up Rippon Tor and back to the car. Lovely to get out and about in an area away from home
Hi Rod - that's an absolutely lovely area to trek around, glad that you managed to get out for a spot of the great outdoor. Stay safe and thanks for watching!
Hi Trev, super video, felt like the early days again with a bit more polish on the production! I love Watern Tor and Wild Tor, which was one of my very first wild camps. Look forward to getting up there again soon.
My favourite part of Dartmoor! Nice video and lovely weather. Hangingstone hill is probably my favourite hill on Dartmoor up there with great staple tor or great links.
Yeah... it was a great spot.... surprisingly busy though... was gonna stop for my breakfast there haha. This was a great little walk... thanks for watching!
Amazing! Quite a slog out that way, especially up Steepton Tor. Gave me some nice memories of my last camp which was on Watern Tor, on a frosty night in early Feb. Some perfect tors and a brilliant video, thanks mate
Cheers Chris, glad that you enjoyed it. Watern Tor is definitely on the cards for a wild camp when we are given the ok. Cannae wait! All the best and thanks for watching!
Great video again Trev, liked the route guide on the map at the start, helps orientation and picking off the best bits to do! Excellent filming and some great shots of the tors and views overall. Jealous!!
The route is also live on Viewranger to follow for free if you are interested. Thanks for watching, and glad that you enjoyed the video. All the best and stay safe!
Really enjoyed that video Trev! Seems a hell of a walk and nice to be in the middle of no where! I like the idea of an early morning walk too! Also loving the editing...I can just imagine you running ahead to put the camera down and then running back to walk back up to the camera, a good way to add some extra miles to your walks!
Haha! It certainly does add a mile or two to each walk - possibly wont do so much of that when I do my South to North walk haha. Thanks ever so much for watching! All the best!
Great video once again Trev love the Tors you went too on this walk the old stomping ground from my Ten Tors days that area is. Glad you found the path to Hanginstone Hill. Also it was a very good idea you took the right route to Watern from Wild because if you go straight down you would have been meet with some nasty bogs going up that side otherwise and from my own experience it's not best pleasing walking through there.
Cheers Harry - I really enjoyed this area - some fantastic tors throughout, and I think there are a few areas that even on this walk were usually a quagmire, but this has been an exceptionally dry season.... all that has changed now though. Not sure when the sun is due back, yet. Thanks for watching!
Loved the even tan comment and approach. It's a common message I get from my wife, especially when I end up with Panda eyes from sunglasses and white hat brim
Yeah, they are quite unique... I would love to see some Texas wilderness though. Hopefully ine day I will have hiked in most parts of the world. Cheers for watching, Ray.
It was hard going, and I went off track a bit at one point and ended up hopping over some marshy (but dry) ground... I think that was where I lost my sunnies and why I didn't go back for them.... But, besides that, it was an absolutely cracking tor and a great walk. thanks for watching!
Another great video mate 👍 This is a area I need to explore some more. Apart from your charity walk I've never ventured over that way much. Good call only wearing shorts on the big tracks, I had a very close shave with an adder today at nuns cross. Some gaters could be on the cards lol Catch ya latter Trev 👍
Scary! Didi it go for you? Ive only ever seen two and both times they darted away from me. Yeah, you definitely should check this side out - maybe we can meet for a collab walk at some point.
@@SummitOrNothing yes I would like that mate 👍 I saw it just as it coiled up to strike. One more step and I would of stepped right on it. You couldn't of got me out of that grass soon enough lol Take it easy mate
It is so great watching these walks 👍 There are some incredibly beautiful and intriguing rock formations on some of these tors. I know that parts of Cornwall was not affected by the ice cap during last ice age. Perhaps this is the matter here too? Thank you for adding my photo from Herdla 😊 I am working with my video clips from that day. I've got a new editing programme so it may take a while to make a presentable video 😉 Thank you for sharing 👍😁
There's an interesting short video about the history of Dartmoor which goes into a little detail of how these tors were formed. You should check it out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JW9oMhWDyCo.html And thanks again for sending in your pictures. I look forward to seeing your video.Cheers for watching!
@@SummitOrNothing Thank you :) I have now watched the video in your link :) Lovely little video. Very informative. Ice was mentioned as an element that changed Dartmoor, but not as late as the last Ice age :)
