I live in a condo and have painted embossed ceiling wallpaper . The bathroom upstairs leaked and put a hole in my ceiling. I believe it's happened before, because the ceiling has 2 layers of drywall. I thought the texture was applied directly to the ceiling, and I was planning to have a contractor repair the holes and re-texture the entire ceiling so it would all match. Then I realized I had painted embossed ceiling wallpaper over a flat drywall ceiling that I believe has a skim coat of plaster or joint compound. Since I'm working from home and live alone, I can now remove the wallpaper myself using your video as guidance. This will save me some money. Thanks for the video.

I'm glad this has come in useful Bob. The best of luck with it and thank you for watching 👍

@@JoeProDecor It looks like I'm taking off the drywall backing and exposing the gypsum core. I think it may be time to have a pro come in to finish. I wanted a smooth ceiling anyway and I know that is not my area of expertise.

Surface strip dry and the back paper soak iv used washing up liquid mixed with water helps when stripping wall paper by adding washing up liquid helps the water to stay on the surface rather than just water which will run down the wall great vids buddy been a decorator and painter for 35 years now love the trade did my apprenticeship got me city and guilds. Over the years done kinds of work industrial steel bashing. Private work new house bashing done the lot.

That's almost exactly how I strip paper. And I've also been a decorator for years Always try and peel off dry first, then soak the backing paper with a sprayer and a cupful if stripping solution. It's so much faster and cleaner method. Very rarely have to use a steamer as its way too messy and ends up damaging the wall. Also have you used zinsser Gardz after stripping? Sometimes you can have paint flaking etc and it's brilliant stuff, seals the wall and any residue that's left after stripping.

I watched this and thought the job would be easy. Washing the wall underneath the wallpaper takes forever. It would have been better for me to have the ceiling replastered!! I wish I hadn’t seen this.

Hi Roger, sorry to hear that you have had so much trouble. This video simply shows how easy it can be in certain situations when using the correct system, but unfortunately not all wallpaper comes off easily this way, which is why i have another wallpaper removal video explaining the different systems used for removing the various types of wallpaper you can come across. Hope that is more useful to you , but its not always easy, although we might sometimes make it look easy, but by following the systems I use...i can garuntee its as easy as it can be. All the very best, Joe

Also Roger, a wall must be completely free from any wallpaper or loose material before it can be plastered, so the wallpaper still needs to be completely stripped off anyway

It is the stuff underneath that is proving difficult. I have probably gone about this in the wrong way.

Great channel! Im a fellow decorator from belfast n ireland...great to c decorating channela on here..i find the hardest part of our trade at the min is pricing work! It never gets any easier. Never seem to get happy mediium..im either too expensive or flying round all day constantly behind lol do you work on price or day work for private jobs?i try a mixture of both at times..day work is great but sometimes customers expectations of what a day is can cause awkwardness lol then again a price can be a killer if u r behind or fatigued for a day or two..im similar age to u and i can be knackered some days!

Hi Stuart, I price according to each individual aspect of a job and how long that is likely to take. So over the year's I have obviously learnt time frames for each job.... It has to be stripped right back for example :- how long each door arc takes, each door, each coat on ceiling and wall's... Then add a day for prep per room..... All these prices worked out when starting out and over the year's as you get faster and more efficient... And invest in tools & equipment that speeds up the process.... Means I never run over on a job, and make a little more based on the time I spend on the job

I'm doing this at the moment but its been pasted directly onto ceiling plasterboard....even after a good soaking its only coming off in very small pieces....ive scored it as well.....any ideas anyone? would be much appreciated

Steaming it off is pretty much last resort if all other methods are failing

@@JoeProDecor thanks joe.....i used a stanley knife to score it yesterday which i dont think helped matters much. Bought a proper wallpaper scorer and used it thoroughly along with zinsser dif and thats made a big difference....i think the more you score the easier it gets....thanks again and thanks for the vids👍

@@richiej5812 no problem 👍 I've used various perforating tools over the years and must say they are all pretty useless apart from the festool fakir one I have now. With alot of the others you will find you have to do more scoring of the surface over longer period and usually requires the help of zinsser to make it easier. I've never had to use zinsser dif myself.... But I did struggle on some jobs before buying the festool fakir perforating tool. I guess dif is a good option without the help. Of the festool, and in the past I would have just got the steamer out 🤣
