00:06 Step 1 - Correct Gear
Before you remove the rear wheel, select the gear that uses the least amount of chain; The fastest at the back, the slowest at the front.
Pro Tip
There are two types of fixing for a front wheel. Hexagonal nuts threaded on a solid axle, or a quick-release system that runs through the centre of a hollow axle.
If the front wheel has a hub brake or a hub generator there are some extra steps
00:06 Step 1 - Detach The front Wheel
If the bike has rim brakes open the brake
00:12 Step 2 - Undo quick release skewer
Rotate the handle of the quick release skewer through 180 degrees from the closed position to the open position.
Pro Tip
If the quick release skewer lever is too tight to open by hand slip a tool like a ring spanner over the lever to get more leverage.
00:20 Step 3 - Lawyer Lips
If the ends of the fork have ‘lawyer lip’ safety tags you’ll have to unscrew the nut, on the opposite side of the handle, and retighten it when you replace the front wheel in the fork. These extra metal lugs are only useful if someone tries to ride the bike with the quick-release incorrectly closed. Unless your bike has disc brakes or you’re going to lend it to an ignorant person there’s no problem in carefully filing them off to allow the quick release skewer to release quickly.
00:33 Step 4 - Remove The front Wheel
Lift the bike off the front wheel.
Pro Tip
For security reasons a quick release skewer may be replaced with a skewer that needs a hexagonal key, or a unique tool, to lock it. The connection through a hollow axle means that both sides tighten together. Pack the tool with your puncture tools.
