00:06 Step 1 - Preparation
Identify somewhere to hang or rest the bike frame once the rear wheel is off.
Pro Tip
There is almost always a tree, a gate or item of street furniture where you can hang your bike. If there’s nowhere to hang your bike, lay it down gently on the non-drive side so the chain doesn’t get dirty, and the rear derailer doesn’t get stressed.
00:14 Step 2 - Detaching The rear Wheel
If the bike has rim brakes open the brake. If the bike has disc brakes, take extreme care to keep control of the bike. If it topples over while the rear wheel is coming out, but the rotor is still in the calliper, the rotor will bend.
00:29 Step 3 -
If the bike has a derailleur gear select the smallest combination of sprockets and turn the pedals so the chain drops onto them. The slowest at the front and the fastest at the back, in each case the smallest available cog rear wheel.
00:47 Step 4 -
Select a tool that fits the nuts exactly. They are most likely to be 15mm. Note the position of any washers between the nuts and the fork. Turn one nut a few degrees to check it can move. Unscrew the opposite nut fully. Return to the first nut and loosen it.
Pro Tip
It’s not usually necessary to remove the nuts from the axle completely. This is particularly important when you’re dealing with a puncture ‘in the wild’ where the nuts may get lost.
01:13 Step 5 - Remove The rear Wheel.
Stand behind the bike with your head on its centre-line.
01:18 Step 6 -
Grab the left side of the bike with your left hand, the seat-stay or luggage rack is usually the best place.
01:26 Step 7 -
Place your right thumb on the end of the nut on the right side. Use your right fingers to pull the derailler body back towards you so it rotates out from under the rear wheel.
01:37 Step 8 -
Lift the bike off the rear wheel. The rear wheel will stay on the ground as the bike comes up. If it sticks in the frame check if there’s anything blocking it’s path, if not it may be that the frame is slightly too narrow for the hub in which case you can give the rear wheel or tyre a downward tap with your right fist to get it moving.
01:58 Step 9 -
Unhook the chain with your right hand to lift the bike with your left.
Pro Tip
If the frame is heavy enough to need two hands hold the rear wheel between your legs until the frame is clear then gently use your feet to let it drop to the ground on the left - non-drive - side. Hang the bike by the nose of the saddle from some convenient gate, fence, tree or other item of street furniture.
Pro Tip
If the bike has longer horizontal drop-outs you may need to push forwards with your right thumb as you lift the frame. Some frames like this - especially if they are fitted with mudguards - may not have enough room to release the rear wheel while the tyre is inflated. In that case let the air out of the tyre to allow the rear wheel to slide forwards and out.

Thanks. Worked like a charm. I’m usually a handy guy but all the gear mechanism was a bit intimidating. I took the wheel on and off 3 times so I can do it with confidence ‘in the wild’.0 here in Canada. I always have a small tool kit and spare tube. I must be ‘old’ because I remember butterfly nuts on the wheels .

Hey all, I’m finding the nuts on my gf’s bike are totally rusted on. What should I do? Get her a new wheel? Thanks so much

Back in the day, bicyclists used wingnuts instead of regular nuts, in order to change a flat tire by untwisting the wingnut with your fingers without any tools.

You might want to try some sort of solvant like WD40, or something stronger, to un-fuse the nut from the bolt. But be careful to get any solvent in the gears or any other moving part of your bike. Otherwise a piece of metal pipe the right size can be used to extend the length of your spanner and increase the turning moment when you apply pressure on it. Good luck!

Will a QR mechanism fit into this type of bike? I mean a full new wheel
@MadeGoodFilms
@MadeGoodFilms 5 лет назад
The bike in the film, like most geared bikes, will accept wheels with both axles that accept wheel nuts, and those that accept quick release skewers. So, yes.

I have 'safety' bolts that need a hex tool that I don't have ~ Can I use pliers or anything else ?
@MadeGoodFilms
@MadeGoodFilms 4 года назад
Not 100% sure what you mean by 'safety' as a regular nut has 6 sides. So assuming it's a normal nut, yes you can use a fixed or adjustable spanner to do the job. You might struggle to get it off with pliers, and you certainly won't be able to get it on tight enough without a spanner of some sort. Good luck!

I was looking an answer for this problem too. Did you manage to remove the safety things? Mine look like a cone with very shallow 'flat' sides, which I doubt there's a tool for that.

What if a tap isn't enough to free the stuck axle from the frame?
@MadeGoodFilms
@MadeGoodFilms 4 года назад
Your frame may be bent, or possibly your axel may be. It could also just be a bit seized with dirt or corrosion between the two elements, but usually it won't be too difficult to remove.

Sorry this video was unhelpful. I have a stripped bolt on that tire so I can’t remove it to change the flat. If you could make a video on how to remove stopped bolts on bike that would be very help . Thanks .
@misternobody4644
@misternobody4644 6 лет назад
@ramiro morales Stripped bolt? That means you were using a wrench that was slightly too loose. Using the correct wrench will not strip it. It's better to use a box-end, open-end, or combination wrench, or a ratchet wrench with correct socket size when it comes to removing highly torque bolts--don't use a crescent wrench. As far removing it, you're going to have to destroy the nut, probably by grinding on it.

Why does the deraileir positions matter? You say to do it, but there is no reasoning given. What does it help? Will you beat something? Does it make it much easier or slightly easier, and why?
@MadeGoodFilms
@MadeGoodFilms 4 года назад
It gives the chain the most amount of slack available, which makes the wheel easier to remove and replace
