Remove Heat from Peppers

For those who can't handle super-hot peppers, this is a fairly quick way to reduce the heat level (amount of capsaicin) from the fruit, and therefore make the pepper less spicy. In this video, I treat an 'Armageddon' pepper (around 1,000,000 scoville) with regular cooking oil and a paper towel to remove some of the heat. Also, a quick flood update (at the end) for those concerned about the farm.
If you find these videos useful, there are a few little things you can do to help me out:

Jason, thoughts are with those in The Fraser Valley. A natural gem in Canada. We were hit hard by the flood in Calgary in 2013. Surprisingly all of our garden plants came through the ordeal fine. One certainly can’t equate garden tribulations to the loss suffered by some people but an emotional tie to individual plants helped us keep ‘sanity’ in a difficult time. Fortunately Roses are tough scrappy survivors like the rest of us Canadians.

Thanks Tom. My heart goes out to the farms and residents of the Sumas prairie - now pretty much underwater.

What an interesting video Jason! Didn't know one can do that do peppers to help cut the heat! I always just take the seeds and white veins out and proceed to cook with it. So glad to hear you haven't been affected by the floods! Hope this continues to be so - stay safe!

Good to know about that method of dealing with peppers, thank you! I was hoping your farm did not get flooded, so that's great. Very concerned for those that are affected, I'm sure we'll hear of ways to help in the next day or two.

Very glad to see you are not flooded - hope it remains safe & dry. But oh my - those peppers - I doubt I could even walk into your kitchen with you doing that - & your eyes weren't even watering! Amazing! - someone could come up with a little roller machine for pressing peppers through oil - as I agree the flavour is desirable - the scalding heat - not! No more rain, either...

My hubby and I love it hotttt! This is awesome to know! I can handle alot hotter than my hubby, so I will be sharing this with him. I love all the knowledge you share with us. I greatly appreciate ya! Alot of people think hot is just hot. So not true. Flavor matters! I prefer pepper flavor hot instead of just tasting a vinegar hot. I'm so glad yall are "dry". Prayers for those who are not so fortunate! Bless you and your family Jason. Stay safe!

Thanks so much. I'm choosing my peppers more carefully this year, taking recommendation of peppers that have great flavor but aren't super hot. Just based on website descriptions, I got seeds for these so far: 'Black Hungarian', 'Habanada', 'Pumpkin Spice', 'Shishito', 'Sugar Rush Peach' and 'Tobago'.

Some of those I have never tried. I think I may just have to add those to my list! Thanks for sharing them! I love trying out new peppers. Love the hot, but it has to have good flavor.

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Hi Jason. I grew the Shisito this year and it is quite mild, We discovered the black hungarian a few years ago and keep growing them each year. I like the flavour and its less hot than a jalapeno. I dropped by this evening for an update on how you and the farm were doing. Thanks for letting us know. Stay Safe!

I'm a wimp, bell peppers are the max heat I eat. I do grow a range of hot peppers because my oldest son likes them. Habs are the hottest we grow, I don't think he is ready for ghost yet. Glad you are not swimming around your roses. We have gotten a lot of rain all summer here in central NY. We were getting some flash flooding a couple weeks ago but my house is up high enough that we are safe.

Thanks for this tip, I like the different flavors of hot peppers very much, but this will help the next time I get peppers that are hotter than I expected.

The water immediately creates invisible fumes that make me cough. I do wear gloves but also a mask because hot peppers are too hot for my nose. And even with the gloves, the skin of my fingers still feel the heat for a long time after my work with hot peppers. And yet, my peppers are not Armageddon. They are at least 400 times less hot than Armageddon Chilli peppers. Thank you for your video.

It’s totally worth it to spend the time doing this, I love mushroom quesadillas with habanero particles, “particles” because I mince it down very small, and all the flavor is there doing this.

When I happen to get some of the heat on my mucous membranes, a teaspoon of oil, butter/margarine or full-fat yoghurt will take up much of it. Let it absorb, then wash off.

Yes. Often people say use milk. But a bit of olive oil when I got capsaicin on my eye lid diluted it well. Oil is fattier than milk.

*squinting at phone screen to see if I can spot any tears in your eyes from eating the pepper* 😝 Great tip for stripping some capsaicin out of peppers! My kids don't have a cast iron tongue like I do, this might be the only way to start easing them into eating something spicier than ketchup.

I think Habaneros have the best flavor of any pepper I have ever tried, but they have to be diluted so that my tongue doesn't explode when I eat them. Thanks for the tip!

Hi Angela - I've heard from quite a few friends who are now returning to their homes, so hopefully we're past the worst of it. Still gas and grocery shortages, but nothing dire. Thanks for your concern!

Chaak Habanero is comparable to the orange variety you're using but less on the Scoville scale. Still a very hot pepper, I simmer half a teaspoon of Chaak or Scotch Bonnets (chopped) in a large pot of spaghetti sauce or stew for 1.5 - 2 hours for the heat to dissipate, leaving the flavour to enjoy. Heat levels depend on how long it simmers, how much is put in and when the hot peppers are thrown in the recipe.

Those peppers would be great for rodent control. Dry them and grind the peppers into a powder and apply it around the nest and any holes in the walls they use.

if a white guy (respectfully) can handle this, man that chili must have gone decimated. See what people don't get is that chili has so many great flavors besides the heat, and it would be great to use a little more. Imma gonna try this!
