Thus, all can depend on us for sound advice and workmanship.

Hello, everyone. The owners of this home asked me to look at some pictures he emailed me online and suggested a fix for the plaster ceiling, which had a chunk of plaster fall off, causing dents in the hardwood floor.
(Good thing no one was standing under the falling plaster.)
I suggested removing the entire plaster ceiling and re-plastering it.
We did just this using a quick set drywall compound.
You might ask how long a lath and plaster ceiling lasts. Centuries as long as vibrations don’t make them loose.
When did they stop using lath and plaster for ceilings? Around 1970, sheetrock was faster and less affected by vibrations.
When doing a project such as this, a lot of time is spent setting up and covering.
We covered the floors and then brought in 4 scaffold A-frames. We then set 5 twelve-foot planks on the scaffold to set this ceiling up properly. Trying it off a ladder would take three times as long to achieve the same results, plus it would make for a very physical process.
In this video, joint Compounds, Westpac Fast Set, or USG Easy Sand: • Joint compound for dry... 2:26, I show the two types of gypsums, Westpac and easy sand.
• Interior Lime finish f... Refinishing sheetrock with lime plaster in kitchens.
• Plastering over sheetr... Lime cement plasters to finish sheetrock.
• Interior Lime plasteri... Cement plaster interior ceilings with wooden lath.
• Interior lime plaster ... white coating lime plastering.

Hey chronic dude, great question! Plaster board 4' x 8' x 5/8" thick sheet weighs about 70 lbs. I'm not comfortable hanging it with screws and expecting it to hold. Plus it's just too heavy. I have however on many occasions used sheet rock from ¼ inch to 5/8 inch. I have also used 3.4 self-furred wire mesh and left the cracked or loose stucco in place. All depends on what we have to work with. And more importantly what the home owner desires we do. Best wishes, Kirk giordano plastering

i agree quality trumps speed, i'm a drywall hanger myself, but there is alot of ''workers'' and a severe shortage of CRAFTSMEN guys who actually take pride in their work, if your good there is no reason you can't be good AND fast. i did piece work for 26 yrs. its the young guys who try to prove themselves by how much they can do, its us older guys who get sent back later to fix their crap !! good video buddy !!!

Hello Kirk, Thank you so much for taking the time to post this video it was very helpful. I really like the comment about quality union work. I'm a union electrician from Oklahoma City and after many years of making other people money I have decided to start my own business doing residental rehabs. The neighborhoods I'm targeting were built in the 1930's, so your video has been a huge help. It's awesome that you go out of your way to post these videos and help others. Thank You! Josh

Hi Paul, the mud will crack if it's mixed too rich sometimes. (Too much cement and not enough sand.) I bought 20 premixed minute plaster for this repair. I just added water! Jason mixes very well as he has a lot of practice. Of course taping mud will crack like an egg if you use it for this purpose, Best wishes, Kirk Giordano Plastering

Good morning bhumanecate, we didn't have that luxury of a drain, we used hammers to tear all the loose stuff of then we used 3,000 psi water strength to remove the rest and especially the loose cement dust. We went back the next day and swept out the residues. If it's not going to come off with a hammer and pressure washing, the rest should be fine. White Portland cement is white as far as it appearing painted, I never looked at it that way. Have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering

Mr. Giordano: Thank you so much for putting these how-to’s on the web. I recently had a leak, and to repair it, the plumbers cut a 4’ rectagular hole in the plaster, then chisled into concrete block wall to remove the old pipe. They also put a large hole in the living room wall to expose the vertical stack. I patched the block wall with pavers, then put cement “wonder board” 1/4” thick as a base, painted Plaster Weld on that, and put the plaster over all. Worked better than I’d hoped. The patches will not be invisible, but its a lot better than the hole that was there. I don’t have your skill in matching texture, but I did OK, and my patch is much stronger than a drywall patch would have been.

Hi bhumanecate, no worries. I swept up the mess when it dried. I did not have access to a shop vac. If water gets behind the old stuff and it will, water has a tendency to loosen it up. If so, again no worries, just pry any newly loosened stuff off. Its better it loosen before you apply the new plaster. Your new plaster is only as good as what it applied to. Best wishes and have a great day! Kirk Giordano plastering

Hey telosfd, For this interior I just buy the fast set patching compounds in bags and add water and apply. I am using Westpac materials, they sell a complete line of chemically hardening drywall patching and finishing compounds. Westpac sells fast set 5 minute, up to 20, 40, and 90 minute mud. I used 20 minute patching compound for this ceiling as I had more than enough time to apply back to back coats. Have a good day! Kirk Giordano plastering

Hey Josh, I here you brother. Some folks ask me to remove and re-plaster the walls or ceilings while few others ask to apply drywall instead. We just do as requested. Most folk’s that call me usually ask for the home to be put back as it was originally was which was plaster. If drywall, sheetrock, plaster board, gypsum board is preferred they call sheet rockers. All these different names of plaster boards are basically the same gypsum product. Have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering

This is important, you encourage people to keep heritage lime plaster on lath which if well-kept is extremely long-lived (and blocks sound well between adjacent rooms and floors better than gypsum drywall.) I've got a solid 1920's home with some sags and cracks, maybe worth a go or get some help. I would spend days learning it just to have a fraction of what you guys know, thanks!

Hey Kirk, First I want to thank you for the videos they are educational and at times mesmerizing Watching you work creating art I can’t believe the speed that you’re working..(Sometime its obvious compared to another person that is working next to you..) So thank you for your kindness You always talk about the materials that you’re using but for some reason it did not click in my head I’m always looking for plaster to repair the plaster walls I have in “the room of horrors “ in my house Naturally I went to Home Depot looking for plaster they have small bags of plaster of Paris I believe... no one knows how to use it or what it is for. I looked up online for places around here I found one place it was a little far from my house and they are closed on the weekend...so I let this project go I just Watched a few of your videos again ..you are talking about “mud” Then I read the comments and One thing I just realized Is that I have the USG Eazy send 45 and 90 here at the house Now I know there are many ways to skin a cat but should I use this throughout ? I have an area that the wood lath stop and the room continue in bricks Also, If i can’t get larsons at the store here in Michigan ..what product do you recomend ? Thank you for everything

Hi Marvin, the tough part is to know where to stop, that takes years of removing and repairing to get it right. Patchwork cost depends on what’s involved. On this I had to cover the floor twice bring in 6 A frames and about 10 plank. I charge accordingly, Sorry, but every project is a bit different. An average patch for a hole in a ceiling is $400 to $600 depending on circumstances. Thanks for watching and have a great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering

Morning Tommy Brando, I use Larson's plaster weld for two reasons, first it gives the plaster the ability to bond the to the timber wood lath, also it's necessary to press the new plaster through the timber wood lath creating a mushrooming effect above the wood lath, (we call this action Keying) plus the plaster weld also eliminates the dust that might still be on this lath from being used once already. IF THERE IS DUST on this wooden lath plaster will not stick properly and the key will be the only grip compromising the integrity of a permanent bond. Best wishes, Kirk and family

Well said Kirk…those guys back in the day were truly masterful with skimming that stuff on there back then. I've renovated 3 homes circa 1880, 1854, 1850…the 1880 houses plaster is still 50 percent intact in my apt..other half i re-did with 5/8's rock…the remaining 75% is toast. anyway's, you nailed it with the fact that the fella you worked for asked you to re-skim it instead of ripping out timber lathe and then insulating bc of the economy, etc. what you did in this video is show that it could be done without gutting in a very artful way..it can be appreciated either way. ..

Sometimes it's great sometimes it's a tad slow…the older i get it seems i get busier..also, when i slow down i study the trades..i've been studying the way you use your trowel….so i take the learning of that and try and keep it in mind when i'm skimming. actually i used a couple of 50 pound bags of Structo-lite (basecoat), by USG…whats do you think of that stuff? i'm skimming beat to hell plaster with it, but embedding fiber mesh sheets of 3' by 75'…opinions? that stuff is very cheap..
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 10 лет назад
Evening Tommy, if your doing big walls Structo-lite is definitely the way to go, I don't use much of this material these days as I do same day systems. With structo-lite you can't do both coats on the same day, or you couldn't back in my days, but it is a great product for scratching complete rooms and coming back with a finish coat another day. Back in the days when I works union we used to have 80 pound bags of Structo-lite. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano plastering

Morning John Tee, I have removed buckling or failing plaster and installed sheetrock to about 50 ceilings in my 30 plus years in this trade. However, what I usually do is what is asked of me. By the way it took 80 years for this plaster to fail and it's mainly because of vibrations caused by their beautiful but heavy and solid wood door opening and slamming. Very typical and completely natural. Thanks for watching, Kirk giordano plastering

I simply prefer this 20 inch pool trowel for most of my work. Thanks for the comment, I guess I’ll get back to the super bowl game, now that half time over with. Have a groovy day! Hi Ross, thanks for the compliment, were trying to be more step by step. Takes allot longer to do a job, because Jason has to stop what he doing and grab the camera. (cement drys fast) What I remember most of this job was at the end of this 10 hour day I'm sweating and really tired, my son looks at me in all honesty and says (why do you look so tired? I'm the one doing all the filming!) I laughed so hard I forgot how tired I was. Best wishes and have groovy day! Kirk Giordano plastering

Howdy Mr. Shoes, I have used Structo-Lite many times and think it’s a great product. It has perlite in it so it’s light and fluffy like whipping cream and easy to apply. I used the 20 minute mud in this ceiling because I didn’t want it to hairline and I wanted it to set fast, firm and solid, so I could keep moving back to back or in this case bucket to bucket. If I did use Structo-Lite I would have still had to apply 2 coats. Thanks for watching and have a groovy day. Kirk Giordano Plastering

Evening Juan Gabriel Benitez Balbuena, that's quite the name. I can't tell the two products apart. I used Westpac 20 minute patching compound as my material supplier sold it. I have used easy sand too but again I personally I can't tell the difference. but of course I'm just an applicator not a chemist. Thanks for watching and have a groovy evening Kirk giordano Plastering

Good morning Heather Celeste, This is an easy question, It's called a drywall patching and finishing compound made by Westpac. I like the 20 minute muds as thats gives me lot's of time to work with it. It also comes in 5, 40, 60, and 90 minutes, which simply means the time you have to work with it. There are many different brands at the big hardware stores such as Lowe's, and Home Depot with different names, usually same stuff. Thanks for watching and have great day! Kirk Giordano Plastering

Howdy Manhillside, I was asked specifically if I would remove the damaged area and re-plaster it the way it was originally by the fella who owns the home. However, I would agree to keep it all original. On some older style homes, folks wish to keep all aspects original. Some folks do wish your way too, and I have done what you have said just not on video, yet. Thank for the comment and have a groovy evening. Kirk Giordano Plastering

Hi Ron, yes, the multi-tool can be used; it's easier. I found the way I did faster, but yes, it was more demanding physically, but I prefer to get it removed more quickly than with less effort. Plus, the multi-tool creates a shit ton of fine silica dust, not good either.😉

Thank you Kirk for showing us the correct way to do old school plaster, cant get enough of your videos!! My wife and I have a 1924 Tudor in Cleveland, OH. I've done a fair bit of mud work on it at this point so Im pretty comfortable with a trowel, now iIm looking to tackle some plaster projects as the majority of the house is still the original plaster with the adobe finish, however the kitchen has two layers of sheet rock on the ceiling (first by previous owner and second by bank when it was foreclosed), both of which were hastily installed with a half ass popcorn finish, just looks terrible. This vid is exactly what I needed!!! I have a question however, do you have any videos on how to plaster outside corners?? I have to fix the plaster in some other rooms that have outside angles and not really sure how to get it nice and straight. Thanks again and keep em coming!!!

Howdy Felix. Sometimes! For example I have seen some folks use screw to hold up loose areas on ceilings providing the screws go into the wood lath and not the grout lines. If you place a plaster of any kind on loose plaster it's only as good as what it is applied to. Plaster if different to sheet rock as it does not have a paper skin holding the gypsum together, therefor screws, have little value. Sorry brother. Have a good evening. Kirk Giordano plastering

Just want to say thanks for making these videos. It's unfortunate that plastering is seemingly going by the wayside for new construction. I have a 1938 colonial with plaster walls and ceilings and I have to say I wouldn't take anything else. When I get around to refinishing the basement - the wood panelling is coming down and plaster and lath is going up... None of that drywall crap. ;)

Hi Mr Giordano. Im a licensed plumber who just go into real estate. You seem like my type of tradesman; done right the first time. Wish i had u here in Boston. I recently renovated a house built in the 1920s down to the studs removing he old horse-hair walls and ceilings except for the stairwells since they were in better shape than anything else. Its only been a few weeks since they plastered over the stairwell walls and there's bubbles everywhere now where you can push in with your fingers and tear off the plaster with ease. Tear off anything loose?, Weld?, and replaster?.....it looks like they just sanded a little and threw new plaster over the existing old loose stuff

Kirk Giordano plastering Inc. thanks for the quick reply....long story short that contractor is no longer on the job, that was the least of his shortcuts.....i scored the loose material cleaned it and applied Plaster Weld....however the choices for plaster are overwhelming and learning from your videos its all in the mix....the scores are not very deep, maybe 1/8" to 1/4" max before it hits a thin plywood....the local choices are UniKal Veneer Plaster, Sheetrock All Purpose Joint Compound green lid, Sheetrock Plus 3 Joint Compound blue lid, or Easy Sand 45 & 90...which would be proper for that thin a coat?

After removing the old plaster I usually re nail or stapel the lath. Most plaster failures are because of loose lath or studs. I use either gypsum and sand or Pearlited gypsum for the scratch and brown coat. screed using float strips. Then I use a slicker to smooth the wall. I leave it to dry for 3 to 5 days and then put on the putty coat of 3 parts lime putty and 1 part guageing plaster. Then using trowel and felt brush I trowel the finish 3 times to get a hard and shiny finish.

I've always been curious about using 'hot mud' on lath like that but never did. I'm scared to take chances line that on jobs . I always went with structolite and then lime and gauging plaster or one of the pre-made materials like Kal-smooth, x-kal, or diamond. I'll have to give this a shot. Have you ever found that you need mesh for the field?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 8 лет назад
Howdy Timson, I have used those gypsum based products as well, I chose this quick set as the structo-lite sometimes, does not set up for as fast as I spread, which means a two day adventure instead of one. You have been using the hardest to work with plasters thus far, so this fast set you can probably do blindfolded. Cheers, kirk giordano

strange! Never see stucco on wood, Here in south of Italy, the houses are all brick. only the ceiling, and a few, are made of wood but they are "artistic" and then are left only wood. But never seen a wooden wall or work on wood putty, very interesting. And you are a great worker man, very professional! we use after the stucco, 2 passes of sandpaper. A 150 grain pass light, wet, and a second pass of 220 grain in this way you have it so smooth stucco that looks like the ass of a baby :) But the young today do not this work, too much for them;) God bless you and your family Krik!
