Thank you. I should have did this months ago. I am about to renew my lease. I was frustrated all this year by my downstairs neighbors. I tried filters and plug the kitchen sink and bathroom sink plumbing with cloth. The secondhand smoke is intense. They smoke weed and cigarettes all day. One day, I have had stomachaches. I even had racing heartbeat.

Thank you so much! I've been chipping away at this issue for several months from a downstairs neighbor. You are right, it takes persistence, patience and time to figure out all the many places smoke is entering! You have to be meticulous. @jeffostroff, do you have any suggestions for how to find a contractor to help with this in NYC? I've located the gaps where the smoke is coming, but need help blocking them.

Yes I agree! It should also be required at all builders yield the units to prevent this from happening all it takes is a little bit of caulk or expanding spray foam insulation in the walls, Which would also help to reduce sound as well.

People shouldn't smoke anywhere near in a building go down the street or something, nobody's trying to smell your cigarette smoke, and in my opinion nobody should have to ask that person to stop it, because it should be common sense for them to stop, your addiction is your addiction but don't bring that addiction to someone else.

BigBossj69 tell that to my neighbor downstairs plus landlord who allows noxious smoke to enter my unit. I’m tired of complaining about smoke infiltrating my apartment. The landlord smokes but won’t allow it on his private house but lets smoke ruin tenants lives. These people smoke starting at 5am and smoke every 15 minutes underneath my window til 12am. I already talked to neighbors and the landlord and all fall on deaf ears. Landlord is a cancer stick sucker himself so why should he care? I can’t open windows even during summer. I have moved multiple times. It is not fair. Non smokers have no rights and have to breathe in cancer causing fumes all day and night in their residences. I'm dealing with that, too. The landlord thinks I'm imagining it. And she smokes, too. It's against the lease here to smoke inside, but most people in the building do - including my nasty next door neighbor. I covered over my vents and outlets not knowing that it wouldn't be enough. I just washed my bedding and curtains and ozoned everything yesterday. It was lovely. Until the neighbor lit up. My bedroom is filled with her smoke again already. I just want to cry. I don't own the place. I shouldn't have to take everything apart and pay for foam and calk. I'm not sure I'm even physically strong enough to get the baseboard off. Or that I can do it without leaving marks. And supplies cost money that I really can't spare. So do the tools to do it all, which I don't have. But I'm going to have to try to seal everything up like you showed. The smoke here makes me sick. I can't afford to rent a building of my own. And all of the apartments around here have smokers. It's just not fair. And I'm thought of as the badguy here. Thank you for showing us how to fix this. I hope I can do it.

Your video was a life saver. I never thought about sealing behind the baseboards until I saw your video. New neighbours moved in below me over a year ago now and they smoke everything…. At all times of the day. I’m dreading summer bc they don’t close their windows so it’s very hard to get fresh air… I’ve sealed my baseboards like you showed in the video though I used caulking instead of spray foam, and I ended up using about 8-10 tubes just for one bedroom. It’s expensive if you go this route…. I’m not handy with electrics so didn’t feel comfortable changing the outlets, but instead installed the proper styrofoam insulation inside the covers, sealed around the boxes with sealant, then after replacing the cover I used vynal electrical tape around the outside of the cover and over the gaps around the plugs. The plugs themselves have baby plugs with insulated styrofoam attached if they are not being used. All light switches were treated the same as above, but bc the smoke was still coming out of the switch area, I taped clear plastic over all the switches using painters tape. Not very pretty to look at but it doesn’t hurt the paint and I can still use my switches without any smoke seeping out. Smoke was escaping out from around bathroom shower and tap so I used silicone to seal all around those pipes. Sealed all around under the sinks….. sooooo much silicone and caulking was used but there is finally no more smoke in those areas. My ceiling fan in the bathroom doesn’t have a flapper and is still seeping smoke. I currently have cellophane wrap over the cover attached with painters tape. It’s a real pain having to detach the cover each time I shower, but worth it to not let the smoke in. It’s the same with my microwave vent in the kitchen. Completely covered with cellophane and painters tape when not in use, but am looking into magnetic vent covers to replace it with. Had to also seal inside all my cupboards and behind my drawers in my kitchen as well bc the smoke was getting in through hole behind the cabinets… The cost of sealing up my condo is not something that I should have to pay, when I’m not the one smoking. I didn’t realize how lucky I was with my previous neighbours. 😢

Best video. I have all of these exact same problems from lousy builder design. I know where most of the problems are, but it is hard to know which materials to use and what is safe. Going to follow your silicon caulk idea for the electrical boxes. Shocking how much stank comes in through the outlet electrical holes. It is awful being subject to your cruddy neighbors’ bad habits. I’ve been trying to figure this out for years, without tearing apart all of the walls.

Hope this helps someone. I have done most of the things suggested in this video and it only helps reduce it. The best method I have found was to create a positive air system for your room. Easiest way is to have a window open and get a strong fan blowing air in, creating a positive air system. Do not have any other door or window open, thus the only place for extra air blowing in to escape is through the small holes forcing the air back to the smoker's side. GL

I just wanted to mention that I am doing the things suggested. I have used expanding foam before. In Canada, a can is about $15 + tax. We should remember that once you start using the can, it is hard to use it again if there is still product left in the can. So you have to use it all in one go. Otherwise, if you use half a can one day and try to use the other half another day, most likely you won't be able to, since the product is so sticky, it will clog the nozzle and you will have to send the can to hazardous waste and buy another can. Great video. Got one-half my apt done and starting on the other half soon. Thanks for taking so much time to produce it. I am a subscriber!

My husband and I applied a lot of the techniques you suggested this past week: using tite foam (sticky stuff!) around the bathroom vent and then caulking/silicone, which we did on all the pipes underneath the sinks. Sealing around the pips significantly reduced the smell as well! Also, we purchased and installed the socket sealers. It was such a tedious process to fill all the possible air leaks. In an effort to do that, we discovered a huge section of wall completely open behind our dryer. The previous homeowner's contractors didn't put drywall in. It's unfortunate, and they were likely unlicensed as we've been running into problems with their work. So my husband installed some drywall. As he installed the drywall, the neighbors smoked a fresh cigarette and my husband smelled it pretty strong. A huge air leak! No wonder! So thankful for your tips. All of this helped us to eliminate most of the smoke leaks. We're gonna observe for the next few days/weeks to see if there is any more to be done.

Many thanks for the video, Jeff! I live in the UK in a high-rise apartment building. We have just identified cigarette smoke as well as cooking smell such as onion and garlic coming from our neighbours flat below us every day. When they were recently on holiday abroad there was absolutely no smell whatsoever. The smell is coming only from under our bathtub sink in the bathroom after removing the panel of the bathtub where there appears to be a medium sized crack on the wall including a crack around the gaps of the wall where the west pipe is entering. The entire areas of the walls are intact apart from that place. We have spoken to a plumber who said that removing the bathtub and covering the cracked area with cement would be the best option, although this would be a big hassle as it will damage the tiles in the process. However, I have just found out that there are 1 meter XL long expanding foam gun applicators! I have tested with a stick and figured out that I can potentially work on trying to fill the gaps under the bathtub walls with a long gun applicator without needing to pull-out the bathtub apart. The question I'd like to ask is what sort of quality expanding foam should I use? Is Loctite the best option to use? I can only see it in US shopping sites and it is quite expensive to order and deliver to the UK. I have read that some foams such as Open-cell have air so the smell can still seep through it. Do I have to absolutely use a closed-cell foam in order to stop any potential smoke/food smell seeping in or is any expanding foam enough? Many thanks!
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
If the smell is only coming from under the bathtub sink, why can't you just caulk all the cracks, and around pipes that lead into the wall or down into your floor? Also make sure your toilet is well caulked and sealed against the floor it can leak around the toilet flange and seep into your bathroom underneath the toilet, We saw that in one place a couple for years ago. In this bathroom shown in this video, I even smelled a little smoke coming in where the shower faucet escutcheon plate was touching the tile, because there is usually a big hole behind it, so I put clear silicone around the plate. I also smelled where the tub spout meets the tile wall and smelled a little bit there too, and put clear caulk around the tub spout connection to the wall. Check up high at the shower arm flange where it meets the wall. As for foam, none of the cans will expand like you want, and you'll want to have professional insulation guys bring the right expanding foam that will fill in those large gaps under the tub. Make sure the tub is filled with water when they do it, to keep the foam from pushing too hard upward on the tub. Make sur eyour tub is well caulked with no cracks in the caulk. There should be no smell.
@BLaZiNgSPEED89
@BLaZiNgSPEED89 5 лет назад
@@jeffostroff Many thanks for your response, Jeff! Actually the crack is very far deep in approximately 1 meter inside. With normal hands you cannot reach the area to work on it without either removing the bathtub or using a very long gun applicator! Actually here are the photos I have just taken and uploaded to give you a very clear idea of my bathtub. oi66.tinypic.com/2nst8jk.jpg and oi67.tinypic.com/cox05.jpg As you can see it is very deep inside. Only way I can cover this area is to use a 1 meter gun applicator. Everywhere else is normal, no cracks at all. Only the right side of the wall is cracked. The pipes are not cracked. The smell is only coming out of this cracked area of the wall which if successfully gets sealed along the gaps of the pipes the smell will no longer come any more. The toilet room is separate from the bathroom and there's absolutely no smell in the toilet as there aren't any cracks there. Architecturally this building has the kitchen being attached next to the bathroom. The smell from cooking enters from their kitchen to the bathtub from under the sink through the pipes and then passes the smell to your next door neighbours bathtub and that's how we end up getting their smell. Absolutely no where else in the apartment do we have smell seeping out. It's actually quite funny if you think about it.

He's not in my unit, he's literally in the next building over but he goes onto a porch diagonal from my windows and smokes so I am at my wits end on what to do. I'm considering sending an anonymous letter. I can't seal the windows or never open open them. I live in a building where the laundry exhaust is consistently infiltertrating our apartment, we can not even open the windows bc thats all we smell and the chemicals from the detergent and dryer sheets is toxic AF... the proof is on the internet. The term fragrance has a loophole in the law where that term can conceal over 100's of carcingenic chemicals that is why many celebs create their own fragrance bc there is no regulatory body that tests them. The movie STINK reveals it all. It used to be on Netflix but I guess they removed to put other movies on. SO many of the products we buy are tainted with toxic chemicals and the gov doesnt care bc these corporations pay them off to not change anything.

Started this process myself. Landlord is looking for legal recourse because these downstairs neighbors have been chain smoking non stop and are driving tenants away! Quebec is very pro tenant even if those tenants cause trouble to others. The foam helps immensely. Unfortunately the unit has a breaker door that doesn't close properly (latch doesn't work), the inside is poorly insulated, and prior tenants painted over the box repeatedly so it makes repairing the door even more tedious.

Awesome video - thanks so much! My smoke problem is coming from the unit below me. It seems to mainly be limited to one particular wall which is an inside wall (6 unit building, 3 single units on each side with a central stairwell - I live in the second floor unit). The worst place is my entry door area. I have added some weatherstripping to the door, which has help. The smoke seems to be mostly coming from below the baseboard heaters - forced hot water. The floor is tiled but there seems to be a gap of about an inch or more where the sub-floor doesn't go all the way to the wall. I can't see into it, but if I put my hand in there it is at least as deep as my fingers, so I assume it is just open to the ceiling below. Can I just fill it up with foam or is there a better answer that does not involve pulling up the tile floor?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
Yes I would try filling it with expanding spray foam until it's level with the sub floor so you can feel it with level with your fingers and then once it is dry if it does not help, if you want you could come in later and add silicone caulk all along the top of the foam and smooth it out with a 1" wide drywall taping knife. Assuming your baseboards are white you might also want to look at running a bead of white caulk along the bottom of the baseboards where it meets the floor to seal that up as well.

Thank you !!!! Modern apartments are just as bad. We need a version of him at our apartment complex. It feels like prison sometimes. People continue to smoke in their suites and second hand smoke is a real threat to my health, my well-being, and my mental health. But who care about those things, it's all about profit, so come in and get all the smokers hooked on these because in 2022, choosing to smoke in your suites, when you have the option to smoke outside in an amenity (beautiful garden settings) is a privilege. So, while it's totally illegal to smoke indoors. Is a luxury to have smoking zones outdoors, where the non smoking zones outdoors in these shared amenities outdoors are much smaller for non smokers at the end of the day. Non smokers are still going to be very much exposed to secondhand smoke even in shared outdoor amenities. It's a travesty. Non smokers don't have the right to fresh air inside nor outside it seems? There are all kinds of accommodations for smokers, yet how many of them really abide by those rules of say, don't smoke near doors, windows and vents? Don't litter? There's a self entitlement, rebel complex that comes with cigarette smoking culture. So if you choose to still smoke in your suites, even with all these multitude of options, you're just an A-hole and a classic law breaker. So there has to be even stricter laws and more to lose, in order to send that message home, that living in a large apartment complex really means respecting your neighbors rights to clean and safe living conditions, or else choose option one, eviction, homelessness or free rent in a jail cell with an unpleasant doppelganger roommate?

Jeff we started to do the work - heavy biohazardous smoker is right below us in a 1950 brick building in New York. We actually started with the outlets, and contractor will do caulking underneath the quarter-rounds and other cracks, holes behind kitchen cabinets etc. We’re gonna be on his ass to make sure it’s done well. The story is that the apartment was vacant for 2 years and the seller put tons of deodorizer to cover the smell all over the apartment. When we visited it and made the purchase we were wearing masks and didn’t notice she was covering up something. Then the berry febreze smell wouldn’t go away so we wash the walls with Zero Odor Pro, the berry smell is going away and now the smoke is quite noticeable. - do caulking behind the quarter rounds will help just like caulking behind the baseboards? - Before painting we will have the contractor paint while apartment with an odor blocking primer. Do you recommend Killz Regular or Jessen BIN? - we have only hardwood floors. Some pieces have cracks. Could it be possible for the smell to go through the floor directly and not just cracks, when the smoker is downstairs? What do you recommend for that? A High gloss finish after refinishing? Or Zanssen Odor Blocking clear primer on the floor? - can the smell from downstairs go all the way tonour ceiling? I decided to not install ceiling lights in the LR since there are so many holes to fill already I am afraid it would only make more holes where smoke can go through. - what about Ozone generators have you used them?

I have old hardwood floors. Maintenance icky caulked my bedroom but not thoroughly do I'm going behind what he did to fill in every opening. I told him to caulk around outlets and light switches. I'm also trying to fill in spaces between the floor planks. Problem: how can I caulk or use expanding foam under my very old radiator? Caulking tube won't fit under radiator to be reach the baseboards. I also have paint so I can paint the baseboards but have to finish caulking first. Uugh it's overwhelming work that I'm doing myself because nothing more is being done in my bedroom by maintenance. Oh yeah I have rug padding and rugs to put down but not until all caulking and sealing is done. Advice please especially re expanding foam that is used around radiator that can withstand heat! @@homestead13 As a former landlord here in FL, you can't just walk away from a lease, they can sue you. But, you can send the landlord a 7 Day Notice to Correct, in writing. If they do nothing, you might have cause to abandon the lease for failure to give you your right to peace and enjoyment of the property. Many leases have some verbiage along these lines, including how you are required to notify the landlord of a problem, so you need to see what your lease requires from you when there is a problem, and to protect yourself legally, there are written instructions in the lease telling you what these requirements are and you should follow them to the "T", or they can sue you for backing out of the lease. Thank you for posting! Re sealing off around those electrical boxes...wouldn't just sealing with the foam gasket around the switch be adequate, so that we wouldn't need to plug up all the holes and opening in the metal switch or junction boxes?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
If all you do is just put in the gasket those are not perfect and you might still get some minor seepage into your room space. Also supposing this switch plate gets cracked and somebody decides to replace it and doesn't put the gasket back now you have smoke a gushing into your unit through your outlet box. So the best strategy is to stop smoke inside the wall and don't ever let it get on your side of the wall space no matter what. Here you are buying yourself extra insurance, backup for the backup.

One time I wanted to seal the 1/2 gap between the drywall and floor, but I didn’t want to risk damaging the new carpet. I used two 3/8 backer rods and sandwiched them in there nice and tight. Instant air tight seal. A little caulk where backer rods butt together and in the corners and it’s good to go.

That's a great idea, those backer rods are the perfect solution for many uses to fill in gaps, especially these larger gaps that caulk could never fill in.

You can use the foam around doors and windows. The instructions of do not specifically deny the use around a hot water pipe but I would not feel comfortable putting it on a hot water pipe. Baby silicone might be better but whatever product you put on there make sure it says that you can use it up to a 140゚ because that's the hottest that the pipe will get with hot water.

Great video, I'm considering doing this, but my problem seems to be worse than just the neighbouring wall. We have 3 floors in our townhouse, and the vents are separate, but we share subflooring. We've improved some things, like the space behind the fridge, etc. The worst offender is the air intake in our main living area and I'm not sure if this is fix-able. It seems to take in air from the inside of the walls, and then blows it throughout the house. Sitting next to the intake is very smelly, (the whole house is smelly, but it's the worst spot.) The furnace room is pretty bad too. I would love any insight!
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 года назад
If it is taking in air from inside the walls, you'll have to block it off, and reroute the air intake to be it's own sealed duct that leads to an intake on the wall somewhere, where that wall stud cavity has been sealed off, so that the ac can only draw in air through the vent on the wall, not from inside the wall.

Thanks for sharing your know-how. I also write to ask what can be done with ceiling recessed liting to stop the offending smoke/vape smell from entering my apartment? Kind regards.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
You have to remove the old can lights and replace them with surface mount lights sealed to the ceiling, see links below to light we used and also to the other video we did showing the install. The problem with those recessed lights, if they are older and deep metal cans, there can be holes all over them. If you could look down form the attic above, you would see light coming in from your room below through all the vent holes. In that case I would recommend you upgrade the ceiling lights to LED wafer lights and remove the cans, unless you want to try to caulk all the holes in the cans. Otherwise you can remove the cans, and rewire the LED wafer lights to the existing light can wires. Then the wafer lights plug in, and the wafer lights spring snap onto the drywall ceiling hole with tight spring grips. The better lights have a ring gasket that goes all the way around for energy efficiency to seal against the ceiling, called "AT - Air Tight", preventing AC loss, which also help prevent smoke in the crawl space from reaching you. You MUST make sure the light says IC Rated (intimate contact) for insulation in the attic, and AT - air tight with gasket, not all lights are. Make sure you buy the right size, these are 4" holes: ✅ Lithonia LED wafer lights we used for this kitchen lighting project: amzn.to/2OniziR. also, see this video: How to Raise Kitchen Ceiling Height, Install LED Wafer Lights, Drywall ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wJHZ_S9e38U.html

That's how it is near us, but you have to look up the rules in your county, and how it has to work, like you have to notice them in wiring, but also hang on to the rent because you'll have to pay it when they correct. Thanks for this video Jeff. Recently I've been smelling pot and cigarette smoke coming into my unit via the wall opening of our hot water baseboard heater. Our building is old, and there is a very big hole in the wall to accommodate the hot water pipe for the heater. Having had enough of those terrible smells, I have closed it off with cardboard cutouts that cover the hole, and used regular tape as well as duct tape to seal it. I could even feel a cold draft and smells coming from there, but now I don't smell it as much if any anymore. My question is, is it safe to block these large holes the way I have explained in an apartment building given a) I'm using cardboard b) I'm possibly reducing fresh air ventilation when there is no smoke coming? It's currently winter time and opening the windows for ventilation is very difficult as temperatures can be -20 degrees.

Like so many others, I’ve surrounded by smokers! I’ve lived in my apt for 10 years and never had this before. Smoking started in June 2019 when the guy moved beside me and we share the balcony platform...I only used my balcony for plants but cannot anymore and have to be careful with my only window next to the balcony. Then during the first covid winter 2020, he chain-smoked indoors, but eventually stopped after he got a building letter (me and tenant below him were suffering), but it provoked him to get revenge on me because he thought I complained when I didn’t at the time, and I asked him to not smoke so he assumed it was same and swore revenge. Then April 2020, new tenants moved in below me and they smoke weed and constantly spray strong air freshener! They can’t even handle their own smoking as they constantly hack when they cough and often run to the balcony to cough even @ 3:30am! My Super said the guy has asthma (likely as a story when he moved in) so she was surprised when I told her about the weed and how both of them are constantly coughing like they’re dying. Someone else smokes weed too and not as often except during last year covid winter, it comes in through my hallway door. I figured out how to stop most if though.

Cigarettes is from balcony and same guy smokes weed in a bomb, which I don’t think I’ve ever smelled knowingly. Plus, he often keeps his door uncooked to slip in and out onto the balcony.

Is there anyway to block second hand smoke from baseboard heaters? I used heat resistant tape and heat resistant insultation (silver aluminum bubble wrap I had for a/c hose) but it doesn't help and I'm assuming it's safe to use and block heat too. For my main room, I believe the second hand smoke and air freshening is coming from my baseboard heaters (it might be a steam or hot water heater - I cannot control the heat in my apartment). The electricians said it was impossible for second hand smoking to come from downstairs (where I hear the loud coughers) because the wall is concrete despite me telling him it IS POSSIBLE. Later he said unless it could be Tenant beside me, which I said is highly unlikely as she's lived here before me and she has never smoked (you get to know how Tenants are). I recently advised my Superintendent of electrical issues and the electricians came in (btw, I can use outlets again, but I cannot use 2 plugs in 1 outlet at the same time because it blew again and I was only using an electrical kettle and microwave! I haven't advised the Superintendent because it's too much of a hassle.). My building hasn't replied to my letter regarding second hand smoke/smells yet. I cannot afford to move (Toronto is too expensive even with the falling condo rental prices) and this is so stressful to deal with on top of being unemployed. Weather is similar to New York and probably colder winters and I've been keeping my window open even at night. :(

If your vents are connected to theirs, then there is no way to stop it. But if they are not connected to their ducts, then we need to find where is it coming from. I assume there is a floor space between you and not a cement slab? If that is the case, it is likely getting inside your wall through air gaps around the pipes and other ducting that passes between your floor and theirs. You have to find out if smoke is actually coming out of your vents, or is it coming out of the gaps around the vents? Then you would add gaskets around the vents to seal the gaps, or caulk around the edges. Let me know what you find.

My neighbour smokes 24/7 indoors and it floods into my apartment constantly and he goes into a rage slamming his door and yelling and cursing in the hallway whenever someone complains about it.

Hi Jeff- I just bought a Condo a year ago and didn't realize until after the fact that I live directly above a chain smoker. The second hand smoke seems to be coming up from the gaps between the flooring and the wall underneath my baseboard heaters or perhaps even through the baseboard heaters. Do you think it would be a problem to use the Loctite Foam underneath the baseboard heater where it could potentially get pretty warm? Thanks so much for this video, I feel like I finally have some hope to fix my problem!

I would not put risk putting anything like that near a source of heat. Try sealing the floor to baseboard gaps first and see that solves it. If it does not solve it, then likely your heater ducts are somehow connected to theirs, or you need to put silicone around where your ducts poke through the floor, that might be connected to their unit as well.

@@jeffostroff Thanks so much for this info, Jeff! If my heater duct is somehow connected to theirs, is there nothing I can do to prevent the smoke from coming in? Also, I'm not sure where you're based but any chance you have a expert such as yourself that you could recommend in the Denver, CO area? Thanks again!

I either have new neighbours, or they're home more due the coronavirus, because I am struggling with the amount of secondhand smoke seeping into my flat. It's worse at the back of the room, right by a dividing wall. It must be coming through the ceiling where the wall meets the floor above. It's hurting my chest, exacerbating my hayfever and acid reflux, and giving me a sinus headache. I don't know which neighbours, or if the smoke is travelling from all the floors above me! The neighbour, directly above me, also sometimes smokes weed on his balcony in the evening. I've had enough!

Have you tried running beads of silicone to caulk that area? Also I bet it is seeping under the wall in their unit, getting into the wall cavity, then seeping under the wall in your unit. We often have to also caulk the wall/floor connections too,

I've got new neighbors who are making it literally impossible for me to live in my apartment due to their weed habit (I'm allergic). We share a wall along my child's bedroom and the living room... I'll be caulking up any walls I can find, as well as doing everything in your video. Thanks and good luck to everyone.

I live in a highrise apartment building with 27 floors, and over 300 people living in it.. and they will not ask tenants not to smoke in their apartments.. no matter how many more non-smoking tenants there are than smoking tenants. I am so tired of smokers being given precedence over us non-smokers. Some of us are severely allergic to cigarette smoke, have asthma, other respiratory issues, etc.. there are children, pregnant women, elderly people, pets, people with chronic illnesses, even people on oxygen.. and the rental company doesn't give a damn. This has been my home of 13 years.. I'm chronically ill, housebound, and disabled.. I have no help, I have too much stuff, I can't move, I don't WANT to move.. but they won't do anything about the smoke. All they did when I complained was send out a notice that informed tenants who were not currently smoking in their apartments, that it was, in fact, OKAY to smoke in their apartments.. as long as they, at their own discretion, "did what they could to reduce the amount of smoke escaping their apartment".. and himalayan salt lamps were mentioned as a suggested method of reducing the smoke. The whole thing was a fxcking joke! Oh, and.. this notice that went out? It caused even more people to start lighting up indoors. So tired of smokers being treated like kings and the rest of us being treated like dirt and shrugged off just because we don't smoke. Wtf kind of ass-backwards crap is that, anyway? I'm choking on the air in my own home.. my eyes are burning.. my health is adversely being affected. This is all happening in a building owned by a very large rental corporation.. and they do not give a damn whose health or whose lives they are destroying by allowing this to happen. Even if out of a building of 350 people, a very small percentage of those people are indoor smokers. Even the fire department tried to tell me condescendingly, "the apartments are completely sealed, bud. if you're smelling something, it's coming from inside your apartment". No.. they're not sealed. Walls do not stop secondhand smoke. If one tenant smokes, everyone smokes. I'll try using some of your advice, but sadly, I'm a low-functioning disabled person who can't do much, and I have no help.. so I'm kind of stuck like this. Sorry I vented.. I'm just so tired of this, and I'm guessing other people can relate.

I am not political at all but if I had the time?? Look at Greta Thunberg. If she can do it...maybe we can! The problem is out of hand! If I'm not physically smoking, is it fair that my mouth 'tastes' like smoke and all of my belongings smell like smoke? Seems overly unfair, doesn't it! I am Sick of it!!!

Will this also eliminate air fresheners used by my nextdoor neighbor? I already sealed a lot of this myself, but I bet I have to do the medicine cabinet next!

IT should eliminate any odor or gas that could come up through the cracks that you seal.
