Snapping is an essential tool. but it should never ever have affected the IRON playhead. The fact that not only this happens but that it cant even be disabled separately is utterly bizarre and the biggest leap of frustration for anyone moving from more expensive editing software. Snapping can already snap clips to other clips. there is no reason whatsoever for the playhead to have to be sandwiched in between.

I think sometimes that they tried to make editing possible without using keyboard at all. Otherwise how do you explain existence of selection/trim and the third never used one modes. Not speaking about confusing and awkward kb shortcuts ... 😀

I agree and now version 19 is out and they STILL haven't fukin added this feature of disabling snap to play head. It's mindblowing how the edit page is basically ignored when it comes to updates.

If you zoom all the way in and have "snapping off", moving a clip still snaps the track from tick point to tick point. I want to micro-move an audio track to sync it to a slate marker on a video track. I don't have SMPTE options available with my video or audio recording devices.

I am finding the same issue. So is there no way to disable that? This video implies that the icon should tell DV to turn it on or off. So snapping can be turned off but only at higher "resolution"?

Very helpful, thanks! Since you mentioned the keyboard shortcut (which I have mapped to another key), it’s becoming muscle memory to switch it on and off for different purposes. For weddings I have all my culled footage on a timeline so it’s off for scrubbing between that footage and back on again for placing it on the actual timeline for editing. This is probably the only thing I prefer Premiere for but I can get used to it for sure.

Playhead snapping is one of those stupid confusing things in DR, along with selection/trim mode and awkward kyboard shortcuts like ctrl+shift+[], and del/backspace unintuitive confusion. A lot of confusing and frustrating things in DR.

Yeah the playhead still snaps either before or after the end of my clip in the Edit page, with seemingly no way to get it to the in-between. Coming from Nuke + AE there's just so many fundamental small issues that are really making this software an absolute pain in the arse to use.

Hi Vivek, good question! So I'm a little behind on the website updates. The course was originally created for and in DaVinci Resolve 17 but the course for Davinci Resolve 18 is not going to look massively different so I've taken the decision to update things so this course will be The Beginners Guide to Davinci Resolve and then we'll update the course with any new sections relevant to Davinci Resolve 18 free of charge in due course. Does that help at all?

I'm having a snapping issue even when the magnetic timeline is off. I'm trying to line a clip up to the beat of the song. Even zoomed way in, the clip snaps to the top lines above in the timeline. The clip either is too short of the beat or past it. How do we make these fine adjustments?
@beckmyre
@beckmyre 5 месяцев назад
You probably figured it out already but that is happening because of your video framerate. Audio does not have a framerate so you can make micro adjustments to it's placement, but video does. Most video you'll deal with is 24 frames per second. That means for each second of time, you have 24 evenly spaced points where a video clip can be placed. This sounds like a lot but when comparing to audio you won't be able to the micro edits to perfectly match the beat. To make video edits line up more perfectly with the beat, you will need to increase the framerate of your project. Probably to at least 60 frames per second. That will give you more points in time to get closer to the beat. Still won't be as exact as audio but it'll get you close. That being said, you can totally use 24fps and still edit to a beat. It won't look perfect on the timeline but as long as you put it on the closest frame to the real beat, most people aren't gonna see any difference.

Unfortunately the temporary-disable trick doesn't work with markers. (ie: If I begin dragging a marker and while I'm dragging I press "N" to disable snapping, then the snapping is disabled, but it doesn't turn back on when I stop dragging the marker).

They still haven't fixed auto trimming when clips get inadvertently moved around. So sick of missing footage because the clips cut themselves down because something else got dragged over. A start would be to allow us to lock a clip, but we don't even have that feature. And this is coming from the paid Fusion version. This is really sad piece of software.

Snapping should be looked at as a “both” and not an “either or” setting. While editing I essentially have a finger ALWAYS resting on the snapping keyboard shortcut and I am constantly switching between on and off. It has significantly increased my ability to edit quickly.

Hmm im not sure, personally i would like if the playhead wouldnt snap when moving it around on the timeline. Its like that in premiere and its easier to deal with lots of clips like that.
@lipsach
@lipsach Год назад
I disagree, If the playead do not snap as in premiere, you almost never have to turn snapping off. For precise editing, you just move the playhead were you want your clip to be edited, and drag to it. But in resolve your playead also snaps, so you must turn on/off snaping all the time.
@robert_mitchell

For some reason, when I want to temporarily toggle the snapping feature, as opposed to turning it on and off, the magnet icon flashes and the clip I'm moving is kind of jittery. It's very annoying and doesn't make the process work well. To be clear, I have snapping off but now I want to move a clip and have it snap, so while moving the clip, I hold down the n key and it flashes and give very strange behavior in the timeline while moving the clip.

I turned the magnet snapping function off and it still snaps. Hit the magnifying glass as high as it goes (to focus in) and it still snaps, it does not move the track head or audio/video files freely - it snaps it to every frame. if i hit "n" & turn snapping function on , it snaps audio video files & track head to every other frame - am I missing something?
@devcowpb
@devcowpb 24 дня назад
If I understand your concern correctly - this is not possible to move video clip forward or backward by a fraction of a frame. You have for example 30 fps, so you can't place a cut in between frames (say 29,5 frame). You are limited to 30 cuts per frame.

@@AlexCameron-Depiqd I just upgraded from Vegas Pro to Premiere a few days ago, and then learned that everyone likes Davinci better. I'm still in the 7 day free trial so I'm testing both out, and so far Premiere seems waay better and less clunky! I'm not sure why people prefer Davinci, except for stability? Snapping is SO aggressive in Davinci, whereas in Premiere or Vegas I don't have to keep turning it on and off, it's good as is. Also the buttons are so much smaller and finickier in Davinci than Premiere, I have to make micro movements with my mouse to be in the right pixel which ends up giving me carpal tunnel, whereas in Premiere it's easier to click the end of the clip instead of accidentally doing a rolling cut, or clicking to slide the timeline or scales to adjust items, etc. I'm really torn if I should cancel my 7 day trial because everyone likes Davinci, or stick with what's instinctually feeling better from the start?
