Anybody like honey? If so, you are going to be drooling watching this video. We removed some gorgeous sections of honey comb weighing between 8 and 10 pounds each, all capped and ready to go......in my ice chest.
Our greatest challenge on this removal was the space we were working in, there was only 3 feet of ceiling height to remove the hive. Now that may seem to be a lot of room, but the difficulty comes in when removing the comb, you have no angle to get to it other than straight on. I think another one of the requirements of being a bee wrangler is you have to be a contortionist and you are able to put your body in the most uncomfortable position to be able to work the weirdest angles to remove comb. By the end of the day EVERY part of my body had an ache in it. Granted, I'm no young whipper snapper, but I'm sure even if I was, I'd have felt this one.
Still, by the grace of God, we managed to get the job complete and the bees relocated to the abbey. Again, Charlie shot some great video and was invaluable hauling our equipment back and forth for this job. Yep, both of us missed Wreck it Ralph, but he will be with us on the next adventure. Until then, God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

Hey Kenny Rogers Jr. (God rest his soul). Looking good. The farm animals getting fed in the background was amusing to watch. I really enjoy watching every Friday but I'm having to rush though some as some is a little limited. 15 minutes is my max on watching most subscriptions. You and other interesting vloggers have me hooked. Keep up the great work and have a great weekend Jeff.

I did not know the Gambler had passed away, he had some great songs. The folks that attend the abbey retreats really enjoy visiting the goats, and the goats love all the food they feed them. I understand about the time limits, and I do try to keep them under 20 minutes, but sometimes there's just to much material. Still, thanks for taking your time to watch what you can, God's peace Joey. Mr. Ed

Ratatouille honey. Yum. I have those PVC gloves on my amazon list. lol Lots of honey. Better frame it up for them this time of year. Yeah, those tight spaces make you work muscles you didn't know you had. Queen clips are designed to be impossible to get out of your bee suit pocket. Nice job framing that all up. That takes some time. Another awesome video from Studio Bee - thanks Jeff.

Hi, Mr. Fuzzy and with non-watermelon hands I dare say it was hard times working off a ladder in a 3 foot space but you're the man can handle it. Rooster would have to jack the house up. Charlie did a fine job of camera juggling and queen cage wrangling. Glad you got all that honey. My sugar was 95 so it could stand to go up a little. Thanks, Buddy, Jesus weekend and HI 2 MOM!
@JeffHorchoff

The Rooster would have lifted the house with one of those watermelon hands and simply scooped the hive out with the other hand, set the house back down, pack up his gear, and call it a day.......after a bacon sanwhich. Only 95, let me send you some honey brother. God's peace Lewie. Mr. Ed

Your work is fascinating! This has probably been asked before. Why is it important to find the queen? Won't the bees "elect" a new queen (via royal jelly) if she goes missing?
@downunderfulla6001
@downunderfulla6001 3 года назад
The replacement queen has to be 24hrs and under old. So there’s a huge break in reproduction.
@anthonyappleyard5688
@anthonyappleyard5688 3 года назад
If the queen goes missing, if the bees have eggs or very young larvae, then they can start another queen, but it uses up time and the new queen must fly and mate, and THEN she must settle in and start laying. All this wastes breeding time.
@Doxymeister
@Doxymeister 3 года назад
Wouldn't a new queen have difficulty finding some drones this time of year? It is pretty late in the season.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 года назад
The bees can only produce a queen if there are eggs less than 3 days old in the hive already. It's always the safest bet to find and cage the queen, that way, you know the likelihood of the hive to survive is greatly enhanced. Smart queens. I wonder how the queen determines how much honey there is in the hive .... does she patrol the honey frames, does she smell how much honey there is, or does she somehow know what season it is, or ? In your yard you have excluders so patroling the honey frames is out of the question ....
@Doxymeister
@Doxymeister 3 года назад
I don't know this for sure, but I don't think it's the queen that determines how much honey they put up, that is the task of the workers. The queen's sole job is to keep open cells laid-up with eggs--the workers take care of just about everything else. Of course, they are all of her genetics--her sisters--so the better the genetics the better they all work together to have a successful hive. Hopefully, a beekeeper will read this and answer definitively, I have no real experience beekeeping, I've just watched a ton of bee videos--a hobby! Peace!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 года назад
The sole concern of a queen bee is to lay eggs. All the other responsibilities of the running and maintaining of the hive are doled out to other bees, and they are the ones that determine the fate of the hive, even directing the queen when to lay and weather it should be drone or worker bees. I like to call them the " board of governors.' Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

😀👍 Great video Mr Ed! Have had this general question, if you don't mind. When you fed the bees pollen substitute in large open trays a few videos back, what did they do with it? Did they snack on the pollen substitute at the spot, or did they transport it properly as "pollen" pellets on their hind legs back to the hives for storing? Trying to feed my hives and not sure about the right way to do it: as honey-pollen patties or as dry powder? Thank you!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 года назад
The bees bring the pollen substitute back to their hives where it is stored. Possibly, they may sample a bit themselves before returning however. As far as patties or dry, that would bee the bee keepers preference, but for me, the dry mix is by far easier and cheaper. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

When bees get cold, they cluster for warmth. It's probable that the Queen in the middle was their objective--no matter what, she has to survive. That's also why Queen excluders are a bad idea when it gets cold. The bee-ball moves up, and any Queen left behind will not survive.

@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 года назад
The bees found this location because there had been a hive there previously and they smelled it. Most often, bees will find an opening that leads to a large space.
