Moving forward on Thunder Mesa 2.0! It's time to break down Calico, Circle D Ranch, and Rainbow Ridge while taking special care of the structures and scenery components that will be re-used on the new layout. I save just about everything else too, like track, wiring, electronics, and even wood that can be used again.
Thanks for watching, amigos!

I believe the rule of thumb when it comes to art is; You can paint over it, as long as what you are doing is going to be better. 😆 I fully trust that this will indeed be the case for 2.0. 👍👍

You're right: Parts of that were hard to watch, especially because that's where I was introduced to Thunder Mesa. Having said that, the anticipation of watching 2.0 come to life is filling me with excitement for what's to come! Thanks for taking us along on the journey Dave.

Never thought the dismantling of your layout would be so instructive whilst still being entertaining and giving hints for the future of Thunder Mesa, To quote the L&B heritage railway in the UK "perhaps it's only sleeping".

Many of my friends thought I was crazy when I tore down my old layout and started again. However, I found it invigorating and I found my mojo again. I know you are feeling the same thing. Like others I look forward to following along with your new adventure.

Just got home from a Righteous Brothers concert and turned to your channel to discover that " you've lost that lovin' feeling" for the old TM. 😏 Wow ...that was downright painful watching the deconstruction. I know...I know....out with the old and in with the new...but geez!!!

The layout was very pretty, sad to see it go. But very excited to see the new layout and the building process.

II grew up (though I didn't know who he was) watching a taped PBS Ward Kimball model train show and as a adult I have equally enjoyed and been inspired by Thunder Mesa Studios. Though after watching a few videos I think the updates will be great, I was very sad thinking at first it was going to be lost

Oooouuuccchhhhh!!!!! That hurts!!!! Yes, watching a beautiful layout, that we wish we could have built, come apart is painful! I had those same style shelves in my train room. Hated those things. Ended up tossing those out.

Following along since I saw Thunder Mesa 1.0 on the Railroad Line forums and watching you getting better and better all along I'm sure 2.0 will be even more spectacular.

Another great video Dave. You really are "Moving Forward". I was just a bit worried about you removing that backdrop on your own. I'm only two months younger that you, so know i can't do things now that i used too.. Maybe get some help if you can, if you have to do any more really awkward moving of things. Loving all the changes in store. Cheers Rob.

hey Dave looks great so far! only recommendation I have to to add a wye at Thunder Mesa (a switch running from just past the depot to the tunnel) as you currently have no way to turn trains.

More than hard to watch, it's exciting to see how fast You're progressing to start with 2.0 of Your layout. I'm now curious how all the beautiful buildings will come together in a new way.

You're killing me Dave watching all that hard work get ripped up...but I have done the same thing when the work I did needed to be done better, so I understand.

Where some of the track was, looks a whole lot like an abandoned rail line after track removal.

I did the same thing a few years ago and remember the mixed feelings the process brought ... the sadness of destruction, but the fun of moving on to something better. Kind of like "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" (thank you Jim McKay and Wide World of Sports) applied to model railroading. Always a pleasure to see what you are up to and learning from your efforts.

That was more fun than what i thought it would be! Dad 82 has taken down 4 layouts , gets bored and starts again, me at 60 , im starting my 2nd layout, hopefully will not make the same mistakes as the first one , not being able to reach certain areas, being planning for a year now, keeping it simple, no inclines, 2 levels, one for passenger, the other freight with a couple of industries, calling it Greygoose Mountain, looking forward your new layout Dave 👍👍👍have a good one mate

Dave, I learned something from your video. After watching you struggle with your massave backdrops I decided to not make a massive backdrop and attach it to the layout, not the wall. My layout the Butte Annachonda and Pacific is being built in a basement and It will be modular. I gathered ideas for leg and table construction from the Pete Watterman Making Tracks IV series. Using rollers is the way to go for my back!

Zen and the Art of Model Trains... Everything is impermanent and incomplete. A new project is started before the old project is completed. If anything gets close to finished, it is time to tear it out and start over. The model train maker is in a constant state of doing, the model train layout is in a constant state of becoming.

Hey Dave have you seen the Toma Model Works drive units? They are ridiculously tiny, in N scale I hope to use one to build a minuscule Plymouth gas switcher, in On18 it would be a perfect base for a tiny Porter or even a Shay.
