I was able to take my transfer case out without pulling off the exhaust. The flexible aluminum floor cover will come out if you remove the nuts and a couple of the exhaust hangers. That saved me a lot of work because I know a couple of the exhaust bolts were going to break! This was out of a 2003 X5 3.0. Just figured I would let you know in case you had the same problem.

I just wanted to clarify that the transfer case uses the same fluid as the transmission although they are separated. Also, you don’t need to remove that big nut on the part that connects to the rear driveshaft, it comes off along with the cover. Very good video man!

Great video! I was wondering if you could make a video showing how to take the transfer case actuator motor only (and not the entire transfer case)?

No actuator motor, that starts with Xdrive in '04.

My clicking noise only comes when I let off the throttle (deceleration) any idea on the specific problem maybe chain or splines to be exact but it’s a 2002 BMW X5 3.0i

Most likely it’s the Transfer Case Mount. Check the rear Drive Shaft too (Giubo) and the Center Bearing.

hey i have a question , cus i have 2001 bmw x5 4.4 and i think i have kind of a problem with 4x4 so , in my car imhad totally no sound of skipping chain but at the same time fromt tires are not spinning , even when car i standing on icy road , i have no idea what the owners before me did with the car . But i am affraid that in my transfer case someones just simply removed to chain , and im using my x5 as only 2wd drive, what do you think , is this vehicle is anle to drive only on 2 wheel drive if there is no chain ? But if chain is inside and i never heard any skipping chain sound then where is a problem that front tires doesnt spinn . I also had to say that at this moment abs and dsc doesnt work , because of two abs sensors.

From what I can see one will not work without the other. The way the transfer case is set up both front and rear have to be connected or it will not turn either one. My problem was a front differential, but I went ahead and pulled my transfer case to replace the chain anyway.

I have taken out my TC and I all so had my front drive shaft extended to fit all the way into the driver's side TC so that it will not strip off the teeth.
