❗EMOTIONAL REACTION❗ As a psychosis survivor, Ren's brutally honest lyrics in "Hi Ren" hit me like a truck. 🚚💥 This song is a visceral, unflinching portrayal of mental illness & the eternal struggle between hopeful recovery and the taunting voice of darkness. 💡😈
I react with raw vulnerability. The vivid storytelling, haunting vocals, and soul-baring intensity left me shaken to my core. 😨 From battling a cruel inner critic to finding hard-won wisdom through suffering, I deeply related to this courageous artistic statement on a spiritual level.
Get ready for an authentic, searing reaction to one of the most powerful explorations of mental health I've ever witnessed. 👂🔥 Ren holds nothing back, delving into the darkest depths and rawest nerve-endings of human psyche. Yet his lyrics also soar with uplifting refrains about perseverance and reclaiming one's humanity.
This masterpiece demands to be experienced. You'll laugh, cry, cringe, and feel every visceral emotion as I navigate Ren's turbulent psychological landscape. Whether you've been touched by mental illness yourself or just appreciate transcendent art, prepare to be moved. 💯🙌
Let me know your favorite lyrics, most gut-punching moments, and how Ren's radical candor and willingness to be emotionally naked impacted you. Did certain lines feel like he reached into your soul? Did you find inspiration and hope amidst the anguish?
I'll be diving deep, analyzing the lyrical genius and thematic brilliance. Get ready to be part of this raw, unforgettable journey into the potent genius of "Hi Ren." 🎢💥

Message for psychosis survivors: You have to learn to forgive yourself for the horrific and embarrassing things you did, and the stress and hurt you caused your loved ones when you were not in your right mind. The shame and guilt lessen with time, but it is not an overnight process. As I read more about Ren's story in the comments, I feel compassion towards him. It serves as a reminder to give myself some of that grace and compassion too. When that inner voice starts to tell you that you are a piece of crap for what you have done, just remember that if that's not a message you would tell anyone else, it's not a message you should tell yourself either.

Spot on, I can't overcome my shame and embarrassment. I am currently a 32 year old male from London and have been through a cycle of clinical depression, anxiety and autoimmunity. Believe it or not for me the therapeutic endorsement of medication helped, but I can totally relate to Ren's view of the NHS system especially being misdiagnosed with such a serious condition. The one thing I can't move on from is the shame embarrassment and guilt that I live with after putting loved ones through it all with me. Very humanising to know others also feel the same way, love from the UK and welcome to Ren lol

There's a Ted Talk called The Voices in My Head by Eleanor Longden. It helped me a lot with accepting things and understanding. Realizing that you aren't alone and others have the same experiences really helps. I'm glad I'm in the age of internet, I probably wouldn't have survived.

Ren finally received a diagnosis almost a decade after his illness (Lyme) started. He's still in treatment and will probably never be physically or mentally "normal". He recounts a time when believing his illness was a government conspiracy and his only way out was to do something unexpected he got out of the car while his mom was driving, stripped off all his clothes and lay naked in the street thinking it would break him free. Years of doctors telling him it was all in his head, and then finally a diagnosis, only to find there was so much damage from the delayed treatment he will probably never be "cured"... yet through it all he had music.

It is Ren's story, he started getting sick in his late teens he was initially diagnosed with bi- polar and then later with ME/CFS . After continuing to get worse both physically and mentally for about 7 years he was finally correctly diagnosed with lyme which had been infecting his body and brain (causing episodes of psychosis) Unfortunately because it had been untreated for so many years the infection had caused a lot of damage and left him with a lot of autoimmune conditions. A couple of stem cell transplants a few years ago bought him back to a place where he was able to get back to making music and start living life again after spending so much of the previous years trapped in his bedroom. For the last year and a bit, he has been in Canada getting specialized treatment for some of the remaining autoimmune issues to try reduce symptoms that he still lives with.

Renegade here. Thank you for sharing your story. I have subbed for more Ren. As others have said, Ren is still dealing with the physical and brain damage done by Lyme disease. He also developed MCAS which makes him allergic to all but i think, 7 foods. He takes 100 pills a day 15 medications, the rest supplements. He was born march 29 1990 so will be 34 on Friday. He is Welsh and started teaching himself guitar and producing beats at 12. He always wanted to be a musician. Long term psychological issues since childhood and strong adhd. With Hi Ren he chose to speak openly about his issues in order to shed light on those who suffer from chronic mental and physical illness. If you would like to watch his 1 million subscriber, thank you speech, called Defining Success, he will show you in 5 minutes the quality of his character. I hope this helps. Welcome to the Rollercoaster. ❤🎉

I think you would enjoy Sick Boy and his singing with Chinchilla in Chalk Outlines . Ren has a lot of music in a lot of styles, he also has a lot of dedicated fans of all ages from pre-teens to retirees . We always welcome reactors to the Ren Rabbit Whole it can make you feel overwhelmed at times because there is so much choice but every selection across multiple genres are quality like a very large box of fine chocolates. Ren also attracts other brilliant artists to him like Chinchilla, Sam Tompkins, and the band The Big Push and others . Dont be afraid some are long like Hi Ren but don't discount them they are som of his best loved works . I will see you next time , I'm delighted to re-experence these with you.❤

I discovered Ren 4 months ago. His fandom are so devoted and one of the least toxic fandoms. Like Ren I am chronically ill and like Ren I was misdiagnosed. I spent 15 years thinking it was all in my head because doctors told me it was just anxiety. Because it took so long for a diagnosis there is no cure only keeping my symptoms stabilized. Like Ren the damage was done. I found Ren at my lowest being housebound because of my illness. Unlike a lot of people Ren understood me. He went through the same things I did. In his fandom I found others like me. Ren is very special. He cares for his fans and we adore him for being him.

Ren and myself are from the same place in North Wales. it's a rural, mostly farming community and though it's not a piss poor place it's certainly humble enough. This guy is one of the most interesting, and I think, important artists working today. he can do literally anything musically and pull it off. Some of his music is fairly heavy lifting but he has fun tracks too, if you're headed down the Ren tube you may want to mix it up a bit.

There is so much to this song, not just the lyrics, every music note and the style of playing differs from persona to persona. The imagery in the video is very deliberate as is the lighting an camera angles. (Pay particular attention to the lights and when they blink.) This song and video are a creative masterpiece. I've probably watched it at least 3 or 4 times a week for about a year now, and I still get chills. I particularly enjoy watching reactions to this song. Ren has done some incredible stuff, I encourage everyone to look up more of his stuff.

Welcome aboard... You are in for one hell of a ride with our boy Ren. This is the rabbit hole Alice, the journey that you're about to embark on is full of surprises. lyrics you will swear were taken from your journal, tons of fun, amazing musicianship, amazing new artists, and lots of goosebumps. the deeper you go the more rewards you get, you will have a ton of new faith in music and in humanity. This lad is incredible. Great reaction BTW. Oh also, it's wise to ask the Renegades which versions of his songs to react to. All of his stuff is good, but there are times when there are multiple versions of a song and while one is good, the other is mind-blowingly incredible. As in Chalk Outlines LIVE with Chinchilla (you'll love her too). Ren doesn't have a single style, he does whatever he wants and most all of it is at another level. My only advice is to do a fun Ren song or two before you dive into the Tale of Jenny and Screech (although its a masterpiece, it's a bit intense emotionally). So maybe get is on the Back on 74 retake or Losing it fisher rap retake or something like that. Also his band the Big Push stuff is incredible as well as his busking stuff. Enjoy and you do want to dive into this one.

Welcome to the Ren-aissance, Liberty! Super-mini bio: Ren contracted Lyme disease as a teen, but then went years being misdiagnosed as his symptoms got worse and his quality of life deteriorated to the point where he legitimately did not believe that he would ever see his 30th birthday. He never gave up on himself and his search for answers allowed him to get a definitive diagnosis from a doctor in Belgium. The disease had caused a lot of damage in the years he'd gone mis-treated, so he released videos in the hopes that he could provide answers to others so they wouldn't suffer as he had. A doctor found his videos and offered him an experimental stem cell procedure if he could get to California to receive it. He got there and responded very well to the treatment to the point where he was capable of going back to creating music. He's spent the last 15 months in Canada receiving new experimental treatments that continue to improve his quality of life. Fun facts about this video: This was the second video they recorded in that basement (Sick Boi is in the same space), and it got so late they got kicked out, so only got 4 takes, with the live audio from one, and video from two, with the second being necessary for the close up handheld camera shots. The light on the right is brighter, so the shadow on the left is literally darker. If you'd like to see more musical storytelling genius, I would highly recommend you check out The Tale of Jenny & Screech, which is a trilogy of tragedy from the streets of England. For more of his singing chops, check out Humble and Oceans. For more of his deep tracks, then check out his work with Chinchilla. Chalk Outlines and How to Be Me. Definitely opt for the Live versions over the studio.

The moment you mentioned the laugh-not-cry thing, I knew you'd appreciate this one a good bit. Stay strong on your own journey and thank you for sharing it. Should you choose to continue to follow the path of Ren's music, be prepared for something completely different and always interesting every time, much of it painted with his own experiences. An excellent follow-up to this one would be his duet with Chinchilla, "Chalk Outlines" - the Live version is often recommended as the first version of it to go with, very powerful stuff, but the studio version is great as well. He does a lot of rap where he flexes his skills, retakes (covers and mash-ups that he makes his own), even some soul jams (Back on 74/Message in a Bottle being one that just got released this month and is one of his just-having-fun songs/vids. Whichever route you take watching his stuff, you likely won't be disappointed. Have a wonderful day!

Great breakdown of what you experienced. While i have never experienced the feeling he portraya in this song, he seems to be the best narrator on experiences, definitely check out his whole discography. Great storytellers say leonard cohen, damon albarn, the kinks , simon and garfunkel do give the impression they have experienced what they are ainging or at least able to manifest that moment. But ren, seems like really owns the experience he raps and sings about. Enjoy, i cant see him not being an essential part of all the good parts of art that now thankfully has the oxygen required .:)

@@kellyt5341 It's a confusing title, because he reluctantly (he didn't want to revisit his worst time) rereleased it with HI REN to show how far he'd come and give others hope. So the title is (just plug the whole thing into YT and you'll see a thumbnail of a VERY thin, sad Ren) the following: Hi Ren' Premiers on youtube on the 15th December

I was finally diagnosed as autistic at 40. So up until then, I just assumed that all the moving around we did (dad was military) somehow let me never learn how to be a proper human. Then I saw the TV show Dexter. (Yes, don’t use TV shows written by people who don’t know shit as your resource for medical advice.) In the first episode, there’s all the first-person narration about him going to a funeral, and not being sure how to act, because he knows he is unmoved by this person’s death, but also knows he is expected to be moved. He has started dating a woman with a lot of sexual trauma PTSD, specifically because her trauma gives him a perfect cover for not wanting to touch or be sexual with anybody, and he can hide his lack of feeling as being thoughtful of her trauma. And since nobody told me that autism can also include, as my therapist says, “a limited number of colors on my emotional palette”, I started talking to my therapist about what if I’m a sociopath, what if I suddenly get triggered and just start murdering people? Like… given the level of various government agencies trying to prevent or punish murderers, how can anybody be confident enough they’d get away with it… and not just once, but repeatedly? Even the serial killer TV dramas usually involve the killer getting steadily bolder and sloppier until he’s caught. Which just seemed like a stupid way to go out. And I didn’t want to be stupid. That therapist convinced me I wasn’t about to snap, but I had to go through several more before I found one who could identify autism through 40yrs of masking. And even knowing all that… my dad died a couple weeks ago. We haven’t spoken in years, and yet I find that I am entirely unmoved by the whole thing. Other than being worried that being unmoved somehow means I’m broken, not merely different. I lost my grandmother and an uncle within a year of each other, a bit before the autism diagnosis, and I was also similarly meh about the whole thing. (Though, since the day we picked to spread their ashes in the Pacific was pretty stormy, I undoubtedly got human remains blown in my face, and probably ingested some of it. So in spite of everything, I’m technically a cannibal now, too.) My point is: I resonate with your story of being briefly a sociopath. I know I should feel stuff, but I don’t. And I try to act normal, but… I don’t actually know what normal is, so I think I trigger the uncanny valley in people. And I have to be constantly aware of everything, and constantly trying to remember what the appropriate response is to that. It’s exhausting. I no longer consider myself human… just human-adjacent. And all of the masking I’ve learned is just pretending to be human, so the humans will feel more comfortable. My working plan now is that I moved from America to Europe. I studied French in high school and college… 30yrs ago. So I can get by. And I just hope that any social faux pas I commit get hand-waved as “He’s an American.” instead of “He’s inhuman.”

You are not less human or human adjacent, you are just a different type of human. Right now, there are people all over the world that would give anything to stop feeling the pain of loss. People overdose and end themselves every day to stop the hurt. There are people that see your ability to not suffer deep loss as a superpower that they would give anything for. I mask too for ADHD to make people feel conferrable. I know to smile and look at them and occasionally nod when they are speaking even though I'm probably not listening. I also have a non-verbal communication disorder. I can't read people, so I don't know when I'm upsetting them until it's too late and they blow up. I also struggle with understanding sarcasm. If someone is going to be in my life for a while, I essentially have to give them an instruction manual on how to talk to me. That means to very direct and understand that I don't mean to upset them and to explain to me exactly what I'm going wrong when I am doing it. I said that I felt like a part of my humanity was stripped away because I lost a piece myself that was normally there. I would feel similarly if I lost my hearing or a limb. It was not to say that not having those things makes you less than. Dehumanizing people is one of the worst things you can do. You see people doing it to each other throughout history to justify atrocities. We all have different abilities and disabilities that we use to experience the world. That's not what stops you from being a human, it is what makes you a human.
@goatkiller666

@@LibertyBelleReacts - The thing that my diagnosis taught me was that I had been approaching humanity as a list of thing I should or should not do. Most of which I could do, if I tried really hard, but didn’t really want to do. Then I learned that I could just choose not to. Trying to pretend that I fit in with humans was the most unhappy I had been, and it was most of my life. Now I am free to be me, instead of that facade I had created. That said, when you talk about dehumanizing, I think we’re having a lexicon problem. I am a person. Humans are also people. My cats are also also people. All people deserve love and respect. I agree with your point, but I would avoid using variants of the word ‘human’ in that conversation, because of this kind of ambiguity. (An argument could also be made that *I* should avoid using “human” the way I did before, because of this same ambiguity. That’s fair. As long as we both agree on which words mean what, I am less concerned with the actual word we settle on.)

From the first time Listening there were immediately two lines that struck me…. “I’m the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope” as well as in the ending poem/monologue, “ it wasn’t a battle for me to win, it was an internal dance, and the more I struggled the harder it.” I was dealing with a heart condition that was ruining my work performance, and that line really connected with me”

Welcome to the multitalented genius Ren. This masterpiece is just the tip of the iceberg. A powerful icing on the Ren-cake if you will 😅 He is a relatable voice for everyone dancing in the darkness as he eloquently, with all the authenticity of someone who is painfully familiar with it, lets us know that we are not alone and inspires us to keep dancing. And in doing so, Ren has literally saved lives with his art. I trust that other RENegades will fill you in on his backstory and probably recommend Sick Boi for insight into his frustrations from being misdiagnosed for years. I will just add a suggestion to check out one of my personal favourites: Crutch feat. Bibi. It’s an older song from before Ren was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease and was written after a breakdown following multiple emergency trips to the hospital. It is heart wrenching and stunning. Also if you want to understand the man behind the art (and why we all love him so dearly), check out his 1m subscribers video on defining success. Ren is not just a brilliant artist but a genuinely good human being who wants to inspire positive change in the world. Hope to see you deep down the Ren rabbit hole with the rest of us 🐰🕳️

Beautiful reaction ... Thank you for sharing a small portion of your life. My wife has Grave's Disease ... luckily we caught it early and continue to manage throughout her life ... with ups and downs. You will find Ren very "emotional". He connects with plenty of people who have mental health issues and has a few outstanding songs like "Ren X Chinchilla - Chalk Outlines (live)" , "Ren - Sick Boi (Official Music Video)" ... if you want to see young Ren, pre diagnosis and going through "it", I suggest "Ren Ft. Bibi - Crutch". Ren is an independent artist and interacts with many YT "Reactors" He does not copyright his videos and if you do get a "strike" he will clear it. He had the number one album in the UK ... all through word of mouth. Welcome to the "RENaissance" ... you will find his fans "RENegades" quite peaceful and passionate. New sub.

In some of the interviews Ren has done he mentioned that he did things he knew were morally or ethically wrong during his worst moments with extreme pain, psychosis and mental breakdown because he was so desperate for a reason -any reason -that would explain the torture he was enduring. It's worthwhile to check out his interviews. He is very open about everything he has gone through ❤ it gives hope to the hopeless to know we are not alone in our suffering and it's healing to be given such a powerful example in Ren that it's okay to talk about these things ❤ I am a Renegade for life

I have never seen anyone stop in the middle of this performance to change clothes, talk about Eminem and Tom Mac, talk about their uncle's butt. In fact, I've never seen a reactor stop in the middle to do anything but comment on the subject at hand: this performance. I couldn't help thinking "this gal obviously just ain't into it." The you got into it. Or appeared to. If you do more Ren, which you should do, at some point watch his million subscriber thank-you speech, it's a quick five-minute synopsis that gives a great into to Ren as a person. As an artist, the sky's the limit. He has all kinds of songs. His heavy songs are seriously heavy, so mix in the fun stuff.

Dr.Carl Jung is credited with the concept of our "Shadow" selves. that little voice in our heads that is the overbearing protector. This is a conversation with "Shadow" ren We can never "kill" our Shadow selves, we have to make peace with it and learn how to compromise with it, because as harsh and "bad" our shadow selves seem to be, it really is the voice of the protector, trying to make sure we don't get hurt., but often comes across as the overbearing bully. You are a gem my dear, sometimes the most important thing in mental health is keeping our sense of humor.

You will find a few cross over Tom Mac and Ren fans. I have seen the video of Tom you are talking about. I use to listen to Tom and then I heard Ren and never looked back. He drops a new song tomorrow. A piano piece. Ren is a true musician who speaks through his guitar and the keyboard. His voice is fantastic, he can rap with the best of them as well. Thank you for your story as well, and your Uncle's story breaks my heart.

Hey LB, so you dipped your toe in the Reniverse. Look for your subs and comments to blow up. I don't always post on reactors new to Ren even though I watch many of them, but as you relate some to his story, I think giving you an overview of it may help you engage it in the future. The Ren Rabbit Hole is DEEP! He has a big catalog with all his busking history, his bands 'Trick The Fox' and 'The Big Push,' his collaborations with artists like Chinchilla (Daisy Matilda Bertenshaw) - she is a whole other Rabbit Hole you'll have to discover as well! Then there are his Demos, Love Music, Freckled Angels, and Sick Boi albums and a number of singles and EPs. 'Hi Ren' was the 'overnight success' trigger for Ren. Ren's backstory can be learned from a number of interviews, I'd suggest checking them out: The Charismatic Voice (Elizabeth Zaroff), Justin Hawkings Rides Again, Chris Liepe, Zach Sang Show all have good ones and will fill in some of the questions you have. Now that you're on the Ren Reactor list, look for the afterburners to kick in and you'll be at 10K subs in no time! Here is a bit of what I post to Ren reactors: Ren Erin Gill was born in Wales and moved to Brighton UK. Ren's dad got him a small beat up guitar at a flea market when he was 8 years old and Ren took it everywhere, obsessed with learning to play, and write songs, by 13 he spent most of his time learning guitar by slowing down RU-vid videos, and practicing piano. The only job Ren ever had was at 16 at a Coop and he was fired after throwing sprouts at a coworker. He began busking on the streets of Brighton where he picked up some money and that made him think he could do it for a living. He'd be in two bands that busk in Brighton, you can find YTs of them online, 'Trick The Fox, and 'The Big Push.' He was in school for music at Bath Spa University, and got a contract with Sony, but soon after his undiagnosed Lyme Disease was disabling and he went back to live with his mom in Wales where he spent most of his time in pain in bed with little energy to do anything. Sony agreed to let him out of his contract, he was 19. When he was feeling up to it he wrote volumes of lyrics and worked on his guitar. He says his hard drives must have 1000 songs on them. Part of his misdiagnosis (see 'Sick Boi') was bipolar and ME/CFS, he was put on many drugs including Diazepam (see the video by that name), that made him hallucinate and was in part with the Lyme infection cause of psychosis and a sense of derealization from the drug he hoped would help (see 'Chalk Outlines'). He was certain he wouldn't live to 30 and at times was thinking of giving up (see 'Suic*de'), but maybe his experience with his childhood friend kept that at bay (see 'For Joe'), in trying to find answers when the doctors were making things worse, he got some information from an ME support group that suggested his mental health problems could be due to an infection. He went to a gastroenterologist with his mom and pretended to have a stomach bug that he said antibiotics worked before, he took them and his mental health improved. With that as a clue he got money together to go to an Infectious Disease doctor in Belgium who just reviewing history told him he thought he had Lyme Disease even before the test result came in, and they did show that. This gave Ren hope that he had a path, he began his road of treatment, and about age 25 he was making music again, you can find many old videos of busking on the street, a few collaborations, search under 'The Big Push,' he independently released his first album 'Freckled Angels.' Ren used a found space in the basement of a friends flat for 'Hi Ren' but the landlord came and told them to leave, they begged for more time, but they only managed 4 takes (Ren and his brilliant videographer Samuel Perry-Falvey do dozens of takes as perfectionists, and they have to as they are mostly all live one takes with no cuts or edits! Recall this when you watch 'The Tales' they did 54 takes just on the last segment Violets Tale alone in the Lanes in Brighton). After being kicked out, Ren thought 'Hi Ren' was a disaster, he wouldn't be able to fix as he was off to Canada the following week for a long course of treatment. But after editing the video he showed it to a friend who turn to him and said, 'this is going to change your life.' Ren was in Canada the next week as the number of 'Hi Ren' blew up. 'Ren Reactors' were now a thing on RU-vid, this drove his album sales when he dropped 'Sick Boi' and it became the number one album in the UK. Some of Ren's works fall into a genre of storytelling that's gained the name 'Bardcore,' and one reactor actually mentioned the show 'The Witcher' and the character of 'Jasker.' A Medieval Troubadour or Bard. 'Hi Ren' was the gateway acid trip for most who found him, and then explored the pharmacopeia of his back catalog as well as the strains of his new releases. 'Hi Ren' I'd put in his 'personal journey - illness path,' while 'The Tales' are more of his social justice sort of work. Here is what I can think of for recommendations: Ren Gill Music journey - his illness path: Crutch Hi Ren Sick Boi Diazepam Depression Chalk Outlines [featuring Chinchilla] How to Be Me [featuring Chinchilla] Cross between his path and his childhood best friend: Freckled Angels Suic*de For Joe Social Justice songs: Dominos The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full) [includes the three parts including Violet's Tale} Money Game Part 1 Money Game Part 2 (Official Lyric Video) Money Game Part 3 Eden There are some 'fun' videos as well (going to need some to keep from using up all the tissues!): Power Murderer Animal Flow Girls! Uninvited Money Game Part 3 is his most ambitious production yet, most of every other video was done guerilla style (begging forgiveness rather than ask permission, using found locations - 'Hi Ren' he only managed 4 takes before the landlord kicked them out) They actually had a budget and arranged a venue for it, you can find many 'making of' videos for Money Game Part 3. This video was only released after an elaborate online collaborative puzzle solving game which you can still check out. Each video had a solution that when solved opened a new video with a new puzzle until you got to the 'Prize,' the penultimate video of 'Eden' then Money Game Part 3 dropped. Ren's 'Money Game ARG (Alternative Reality Game) contest. - - - - - Ren ~ Money Game ARG Playlist (Complete Series) Hexenkind1 27 videos 2,511 views Updated yesterday The whole money game ARG playlist with explanation videos from @RikaShae for the FULL money game EXPERIENCE (ru-vid.com/group/PLyK6PA3ZIW6ZTuGxd3FCTxAz1naJkQC6J) So yeah, just a tiny bit of a To Do List for catching up with Ren!
