Hi everyone! My name is Anna and I'm a neurologist who enjoys making videos about the brain. I’m also passionate about music and how it affects the brain. I also love listening to music with you, where we can uncover interesting insights about how music impacts the brain while listening to music together!
In this video, I explore Ren's masterpiece "Mackay." The musical compositions I've experienced thus far by Ren exude a divine quality, and this one is no exception. I highly recommend visiting his channel and subscribing, if you haven't already done so: ‪@RenMakesMusic‬

I think this was a really amazing piece from Ren, I’m a musician myself but one that can’t sing so my music is always instrumental. I concentrate on making music that is a reflection of how I’m feeling at the time. To me it gives me an outlet that most people don’t have and it’s very therapeutic, especially when you go back to it at another time and think about it. I really enjoy your reactions to music it gives me more of an insight into what I feel and why when I listen to music, like you I can get quite emotional to it. Ren - Hi Ren was one of them because there were a lot of things in it that I could relate to. Another song is a cover of the Nine inch nails/Jonny Cash song ‘Hurt’ by a vocal coach Lolli Wren - also known as The Fairy Voice Mother who is a RU-vid reactor also; her rendition had me streaming with tears! As regards the aspects of Death, I have experienced a few strange moments, both when I couldn’t be there for close relatives. It was like a feeling of unease that gradually receded to complete peace; until your information on this video I never managed to figure it out, now I understand what it most likely was that I had experienced and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that 🌹

Every single note in this beautiful song is actually a word or phrase; And it's, simply beautiful. There are so many of us, I can relate. There are no words in dialect to quite express this first hand - yet - each of us (listen carefully) can hear the words.

Ren can capture so much emotion in his music and can say so much without words. Lovely reaction Anna. Thank you. I think science is behind the curve when it comes to the process we call death. Some physicists have started to contemplate that consciousness may be the base reality and other research into NDE's, Shared Death Experiences and even Scientific Remote Viewing now provide strong albeit some would say circumstantial evidence that this is the case. Perhaps the needed paradigm shift will come. No one is ever lost, consciousness continues. Best wishes from the UK

Thank you. Great timing. My first encounter with your site. My 46 year old son just turned me on with REN. I’m 74 and dealing with my own mortality, that has become more than a philosophical question. Even tho it is rap and hard for my ears to understand, I hear the jumbled screaming of my own thoughts over a long life-time of regrets, loves and despair. It could have been worse, I suppose.

Ren is currently releasing daily chapers of his life story to raise awareness of M.E/CFS and chronic illness. I think you would find them interesting and appreciate his insights. One of the things he discussed on day two was his relationship with death and mortality.

God woke me up twice as a young kid aged 12/15. Both times my grandmothers had passed. Each time my mom said, "Why are you awake?" I said in 15 or 20 minutes the nursing home would be calling. My mom knew what that meant with no more words needed. I stayed awake until after each of those calls and said well I'm going back to bed for a while it's going to be several long days. That was my 100% Irish family dealing with life and death. It was also my way of telling my mother you will need sleep too, we will be busy and you'll need your energy, now sleep. All Irish kids grew up that way. We all talked back to our parents. That is how your parents trained in the ways of dealing with your internal feelings and how to handle other people, when you are forced to deal with other people, you need training and that's happens in Irish homes. Teach your kids these lessons you had to learn. Remember your kids will be the ones taking care of you. Remember that when your taking care of someones needs, just like you, they have needs and thoughts just such as you yourself. That Irish heritage is still strong into today's American Irish born persons. So it's not that the Irish don't go through the 5 stages of grief, we all do. The facts remain that we were brought up to know that in death, there is much to learn. Death is just as important as life, but there's nothing you can do to bring a person back. Except these things, once and for all. That death is it's just one piece in this intervenes and you must except that death is just a exceptable part of life. and that these the things matter. It matters. We can't outrun it, ignore it. Whatever It is that really matters because what matters most are greater than self entrance into the natural part of the circle of life. So except the day as God has given it to you, because you are never promised a tomorrow. Celebrate the person you lost and express the love you had for them openly, and willingly, with no ones opinions formed upon you, as you are mourning death. From those who truly knew you and loved you, they are the ones who would permit you to move on and who want you to move on. We are taught at a very young age, that our loved ones have to go before us. The reason we are taught about death as extremely young children is in today's world, I still believe has relatively in a modern world. Art and artist allow us to believe in a world that doesn't exist in our physical conditions where we do live. The suggestion as our parents have said, that they had already seen this movie before. Can you see things we were told. Things like, all your immediate family will die before you die. So your passing first concept boils down to, everybody will die before you and the other reason for religious beliefs. Short answer, it's so they can build you a home in the kingdom of Heaven. One such home is being prepared for you right now, by the hands of the beloved departed. So, a child can know their mom, dad, grandparents, sister, brother's had to pass first before you could get permission from God to move past too. As a child, that removes the burden of a death theory, it's presented as a continuance still strong in Irish homes. You take care of your own no matter what. Even if 50 years went by without communication. Basically you didn't fear death, you fear God. Death is just a part of life and it's going to happen to you, regardless if you like it or not. So hurry up, life is short. As you pour the last handful of dirt upon the tops of their caskets and drive away. You've held up your end of the bargain which was to bury you. I kept my end too. I shared this great knowledge of life and hope. I helped you gain confidence and strength back and you shared personal experiences you have dealt with in life but experiences are personal and not of the collective. In my quest to learn about myself, I think I figured out a part of me that I know and I don't want that presence that scares me to death when I feel its presence around me. Watching other people doing whatever they're doing. I figured out we work in a patterns and habits realm. Problems are the other people, the majority of people truly can't see or understand their roles in society. So I'm watching silently as others around me are living their lives and I'm merely observing how cultures vary from USA culture. If we understand other cultures, we should not be afraid to know exactly what the USA does to stop them based on observing that other country's response to that scenario that is being role-playing prepared. These observations can tell the US government branches that if strange things occur, then, this is the result of that prior action. The government uses that data collection from inside the US to make wartime decision making. Meaning both domestic and international domestic product decisions are made based on the movements of groups inside the United States. If you have a 300,000,000.00 tag on that satellite, I guarantee the government gets good use of it, they just don't want the public to know what is going on right under their noses and right beside them living in a cul-de-sac housing. The government doesn't want the locals to interact with the field operators. Their there to study your neighbors and you. To try keep the theme under US going strong. I believe the theme of the US is this nugget. One Nation Under God With Liberty And Justice For All. Recently US Citizens have forgotten the US is a melting pot of people and that is one of America's strengths. We learned this from watching Saturday Cartoons. The commercials were educational for kids. Like the commercials the government had made. Like, "I'm Just A Bill." This exposure on Saturdays was how I learned how a bill becomes a law. another segment was called Junction Junction, what's your function? High school kids these days cannot tell you the capital of all 50 states in the US, much less in 10 to 20 different countries overseas. Those kids could not tell you what the capitals of those countries were either. Our education system has gone so far downhill, that I don't even see the point of it anymore.

Forgive me for commenting on two videos of yours in such a short span of time. I was actually researching something else but saw that you did a reaction to a Ren song and...I LOVE REN!!! So, I had to watch this. Wow. From a perfectly understandable, heartfelt and authentic reaction (to whom I consider the 21st Century's first legitimate bard); to expounding on the concept of death in such a beautiful manner; I wanted to extend my deepest thanks and appreciation of your content. I have, unfortunately, way too much experience with the subject matter and your eloquent viewpoint on the subject is cathartic as I share a very similar stance on the topic. Thank you. You are a true professional in every sense of the word.

Glad you found this one Anna. Ren perfectly summed this up with what he said about this piece. Sometimes you can't find the words, perhaps sometimes words are necessary. I have listened to this on repeat a number of times since Ren released and even without lyrics it has become one of my favourite performances. You are one hundred percent right, we especially in Western culture fear death, we fear the unknown..... the ultimate unknown. Really it is the only certainty of our short existence on this planet, it comes to an end. Having a chance to decide how we might choose to experience that and being at peace with it is huge beyond measure. Ren today has released a video titled Chapter 1, a simple spoken word essay of sorts of his experiences from his teen years illness, misdiagnosis seemingly being treated dismissively by different medical professionals. The Joe's passing and what eventuated from that. It is well worth the listen.

Maybe Ren sensed that words would just get in the way. I'm reading Thomas a Kempis' Meditations on Death. As you pointed out, confronting our own mortality ironically makes us appreciate life more. One of the most beautiful piano solos I've ever heard.

I’m very rarely into purely instrumental music, but this somehow felt like Ren was playing words. And this is the man who is so often praised for being a brilliant lyricist as one of his main talents. Yet he didn’t need a single word to express his emotions in this one. A stunning and perfect tribute to his friend 🖤🐰🕳️

I was with my mum when she died, my sister and my ex husband were there too. She was 94, had been bright (and occasionally difficult). Dementia came on fast at 91 and my husband, who had power of attorney for her, had to get her into a caŕe home after multiple times of the police phoning him in the small hours of the morning to take her home from miles away. She passed peacefully and we all felt relieved that she was released from her confusion.

Thanks for posting this. I consider myself a quite logical/scientific person, and also a spiritual person. They are not mutually exclusive. Science is one of the greatest gifts that spirit gives us. We are driven to understand. My mother died last January. I would describe my family as close in spirit, not in physical space. We never needed to touch or to speak to know that we loved each other. And since mom died, I feel the same. She's still here with me. Despite it being sudden, there's nothing I wish I'd said or didn't say. It feels like I'm being human incorrectly. This is not the way people grieve. What I do find difficult is the now constant worry about the details of dying. What will happen when my father dies? What are his wishes? What about my sister, or my husband? How long will I need care assistance for myself? Will I even be able to afford it? Will I die alone, and do I mind if I do? It's the living that's hard. Not the dying.

You should check out Citizen Soldier. They cover similar topics to Ren, but in the genre of rock. Some hard rock, some soft rock, and some in the middle. I think the PERFECT songs to start with are either Tattoos, for a more overall positive song, or Would Anyone Care, for a song that is mostly negative, then at the end becomes much more positive, as a kind of "light at the end of the dark tunnel" kind of song. The lead singer, Jake Segura, wrote his first song, Let It Burn, on a psych ward napkin after attempting suicide in 2016, and since 2019, he's been releasing hit after hit after hit. Not on the music charts, as, like Ren, their goal isn't to be commercial, it's to help people. To let people know they aren't alone in the battles they face every day. Their songs are hits because every single one kf their songs is just as powerful and relatable as Ren's. And they inspire me to be the same kind of person. Because of Citizen Soldier, I want to be the one people go to when they feel alone in their feelings. I want to be the one who supports them, and comforts them, and advises them, and helps get them back on their feet when life kicks them to the dirt. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here today. So definitely give them a listen. The more people find Citizen Soldier, the more people they can help thise in need. And in turn, the more people I can help, by showing them that they aren't alone. I'm not much of a wordsmith, so if I can't help with words, I direct people to CS. And I can usually show them a song that relates to their specific issue. Because, and my comic book nerd is gonna show here a bit, but just like in the Spider-Man mythos, his Aunt May says "When you help someone, you help everyone." So even if I only help one person in my whole life, I've helped a lot more than that. And so, I do my best to help everyone however I can. And getting people to listen to CS is one of the best ways I can think of to help them.

Thanks so much Anna. Ren's music, and your words were beautiful ❤‍🩹. My Dad died a couple of years ago too. It comforts me to know that he had a wonderful life, and things between us were always good. Since he died, I always tell people to try an keep things good between you and all of your loved ones, to really appreciate them. This is for you, but also for them, if you were to die. When a loved one dies, the path to acceptance is so much smoother when there is no bitterness between you, and your final memories are good.

After seeing the shirt Ren was wearing in this and after hearing your comments about how music can transcend words to express grief, I couldn't help but ponder how much I have grieved for my favorite musicians that have passed, almost all of them too young. Bradley Nowell (Sublime), Layne Staley (Alice In Chains), Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Randy Rhoads, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Prince, Tom Petty, Chris Cornell. It hurts that they're not here anymore, but what hurts even more is that we never got to experience the music they had left in them to give.

I am watching all of your reviews of Ren's songs. I did want to make the point that you're not a psychiatrist but a neuro-scientist, MD. Big difference. (never dealt with a psychiatrist that transmitted the warmth you do) I am not sure what Ren's real, personal history is but his work implies that he has suffered bouts of mental illness. But is that what he's all about or is his work really about his artistic interpretations? I am drawn to your reviews because you are both analytical and empathetic as well as very relaxed. Thanks...

NDE's do not need literal or more accurately immanent threat of death. It is sufficient to believe you are going to die or to grasp the realization that death is inevitable. The same type of exprrience can also occur as, at least aubjectively, as a spontaneous fluke. In a technical sense that is probably not the case since it is a matter of certain physiological conditions occuring. Lyme disease may he congruent to those conditions as i am aware of at least one case that caused fluid to build up around the brain due to swelling around the neck. More typically ypu are looking at increased flow of cerebro spinal fluid from the base or sacral area of the spine, up the spine, and into the cranium. A much more exteme versuon of more common tingling sensation we sometimes feel up the spine. The influx of cerbro spinal fluid into the brain increases interconnectivity, in particular in the area between the parallel parts of the huppicampus. The aytipical part that defies modern scientific understsnding of physiology is the influence of the excess fluid within the brain. It wouldnt be detectable under almost any conditions at any given time because it simply would not be there. Individually it may only occur once if ever for a very brief time for any given person. Collectively such experiences are almost as inevitable, universal, and relatable as death.

Bloody hell, not the "a study shows" nonsense. Someone like you should know how science works. Single studies, especially small ones, can show all sorts of things, for all sorts of reasons. It means nothing, until it's been through comprehensive peer review. Most individual studies fall down in peer review, for a variety of reasons, including discovered error, or bias, intentional or unintentional. Sometimes it's just that the initial sample was too small to reveal the wider picture. News organisations and social media are the worst places for indulging this "a study shows" or "a study proves" fallacy. Sometimes it's a genuine error, or a misunderstanding of the scientific process but often it's because a particular agenda is being pushed. Confirmation bias and/or sensationalism often play a role here too.
