This is beautiful. Calgary should add Ren to the tourist board because he really shows off some of the amazing scenery from the Province. I can just imagine hiking and hearing this bouncing off the canyon. It would stop you in your tracks.
@BlackPegasusRaps The A in Callum is like in Apple.. or Pal. Cal for short, like in California. Also, he says the name in Su!cide and For Joe when he lists his circle of friends he stopped speaking to after Joe was gone. Names can be weird sometimes so no worries. Callum is a fairly common Scotts Gaelic name. "Callum is a Scottish Gaelic name that commemorates the Latin name Columba, meaning 'dove'." This piece is fitting for a Dove. And by Ren's accounting it sounds like he lived up to his name.
LOL I was hoping someone did this so I didn’t have to. So thank you! My earliest known Scottish ancestor’s name was Callum. His son fled to the New World during the Clearances. 7 generations down the line I’m a Scottish, Irish, English, German…AMERICAN… mutt! I had to marry a pureblood Scot to bring some pedigree back to my lineage. 😂

Same. Those instilling my classical training weren't always thrilled about it, but at the age of seven, I got a new instructor. He explained the concept of blue notes (off-notes, outside notes, etc.) and that they didn't even need to fit in the 12-tone system (equal temperament). While the harmonic series is something we learn as infants (it's necessary outside of music for things like speech comprehension too), we learn the blues from hard earned experience. So if we hear someone playing out of key or off-pitch deliberately, it might just mean they have a story to tell. After reading what Ren had to say about this song and how unreal it felt to him, that part certainly clicked more firmly in this piece.

There are two main ways to approach composing instrumental music: start with the melody or the chord progression. Music Theory isn't just about reading notation. It's the study of how chords evoke emotions and create a sense of structure within a piece. Understanding theory allows you to intentionally convey the feelings you want your music to express. Music composition, like painting or poetry, involves learning established techniques and traditions. This knowledge gives you the tools to shape your own artistic expression. As a rapper, you already understand how to use rhythm and rhyme to create art. Learning basic music theory can open up new creative possibilities for you. It can enhance your understanding of how music works and allow you to combine your rapping skills with traditional melodic and harmonic elements. Resources like GarageBand, Muse Score, and online classes are great ways to start. RU-vid channels like Alex Moukala can also provide practical insights into the composing process. Seriously, friend. With all of your prior experience in production and performance of any type, just start scratching the surface on Music Theory and see where it leads you. It can really open up the doorways of expression. Like it did for Ren.
Music comes from so many places. There's no specific way to write music. There are rules, but once you know those rules, you can break them, because you'll understand why you're breaking them. Sometimes people subconsciously just write something and it works. I've done it with music projects when I took music courses and at home. Nothing as elaborate as Ren, at least nothing written down. My brain has so many ideas, but I as well as others have a difficult time expressing our ideas. Then there are those like Ren who seem to have a way with expressing their musical ideas in such a way, it's just simply beautiful.
If I didn't know who Ren was and this was the first video I'd seen with no insight in his past. I would still be in awe of just the sounds he makes that piano make. The cord change and flickers that kind of make sound visible at 12:00 just kills me.
Just to note, he's doing alternate chords / progressions with his hands and crossovers. That's not basic at all, a lot of people would struggle to do that as your brain naturally fights against those opposite movements.
Many won’t know who Lewis was. When Callum had his tragic accident Lewis also died trying to save him. Here is an extract from the Coroner’s report: ‘ A father whose son drowned in rough seas off Anglesey has praised the "unstinting bravery" of the friend who died trying to save him. Lewis Darroch, from Valley, dived into the water at Cable Bay on 24 August last year when Callum Mackay, also 22, from Llanfairpwll, got into trouble. Mr Darroch was forced to give up but the waves swept him back into the sea. Steven Mackay paid a "huge tribute" and backed a posthumous award. Accidental death inquest verdicts were recorded. Mr Darroch was recovered by helicopter but was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, while Mr Mackay's body was found a week later. Coroner Dewi Pritchard-Jones said: "The decision to go swimming in the conditions that prevailed that day wasn't wise. "Although it wasn't difficult to go in the sea the problem was in getting out and the waves were such they were unable to get out safely. "I think Callum's enthusiasm was too much for him in that he decided he was going swimming. It wasn't a wise decision. "If he wasn't so enthusiastic he might not have jumped in. But he went in for the pleasure of swimming in such conditions and the fact he couldn't get out was a pure accident." Mr Pritchard-Jones added: "Lewis hadn't intended to go swimming but when he realised his friend was in difficulties he stripped off and in his underpants dived in to try to save his friend." The double inquest in Llangefni was told that Mr Darroch is to be nominated for a posthumous bravery award by the Carnegie Foundation. Mr Mackay's father Steven said the award was "absolutely" justified. He said: "We want to pay a huge tribute to Lewis Alan Darroch for his unstinting bravery in not even considering his own safety but just going in trying to rescue our son Callum. "Just by a quirk of fate, a tragedy has happened."
It’s long because it’s a copy and paste from the Coroner’s report. Such a sad accident but I think it right people know the full story and Lewis’ part who gave his life for his friend.

Thanks for the nod, I’ll check it out on Doc’s channel. With regard the pronunciation, I’m pretty sure that McKay is only of Scottish and N Irish origin and not Welsh. Callum can be Scottish or Irish but I’m not sure if it’s indigenous to Welsh or if they have their own version of it. In any event both names are Celtic in their roots but the pronunciation if you don’t know can be very tricky.
Callum is pronounced the same as Al as in "You can call me Al!" It is also pronounced by Ren at the end of his Song Su!cide at about 190 seconds in when he is talking about missing going out with the lads.

Over here in the UK we would pronounce his name as C.AL..LUM as in *Paul Simons* (You can call me AL) but BP it doesent really matter.. thanks for the great reaction...i have just lost a really good friend only a few days ago and this beautiful piece of music really resonates with me...massive respect from Liverpool UK

Awesome reaction. This was beautiful, but also had me in tears. My younger brother took his life and it broke me. He was my brother but also my best friend who always had my back. He was my rock when I needed to vent. I suffer from depression and he always called me everyday just to make sure I was OK. I had no clue he was going through depression also. Being the older sister I wish I could have known and saved him somehow I wish he was still here. R.I.P. Lil brother
As a Scot, I am used to the name Callum or Calum which is a popular Scottish boys name. We also have the name Kaylum too pronounced the way you said it. Also McKay is a Scottish surname or family name too. It has it's own tartan. In Scotland McKay is pronounced McKy but in England they pronounce it the same as you. The music is haunting and atmospheric.
You mentioned that it feels like a film score .... while in no way the same it has some of the feel of Ryuichi Sakamoto's score for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence ........beautiful and haunting.... I'm loving this !

This song reminds me of music from my favorite pianist. Beautiful. When Netflix had the Moving Art videos they originally included music by pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi (they don't anymore), that's when I discovered how much I loved his music. There's a video on YT where he plays a baby grand piano while floating on a raft in the arctic ocean, near glaciers. It's breathtaking.
There are common chord progressions just like there are common word combos in rap. But he is self-taught so there's a few unpredictable choices and that comes from just "feeling" and creating on the spot. His sound design choices are very specific to his taste and that is what makes what he does always special to me.
You're humble BP. If you can hear music in your head then you can hum it as you record audio. That's the starter even without you not knowing how to play an instrument. ❤❤❤
@TanyaQueen182 I should have figured. He is getting daily treatments. We have that kind of sandstone here, too! Utah used to be covered in Salt water millions of years ago. Now we have what's left over.. Dinosaur bones, the Great Salt Lake, & all different sort of rock formations down south. We have the most national parks (5) because of it.
