Ren is incredibly talented, but I have to give mad props to the cameraman who captured all these performances to perfection in a superbly timed and framed one shot filming style. The level of skill and choreography involved in making these is insane. Focus, framing, timing, exposure, position, sound, grading, editing.. As well as finding the locations, getting permission and not upsetting the neighborhood when making the videos 🤯 It wouldn't surprise me one bit if it was just the two of them, Ren and Samuel. Probably filmed on a budget of a bag of toffees and a goat. I just feel that the background crew is not getting enough appreciation, but most certainly deserves some. Well done my guy(s). 👍😎

The explanation of the inclusion of "She sells sea shells" is in video "Money games II". Jenny takes after her mother she stays quiet unable to move, Screech is violent like his Father? Ren's Father was a musician, theater director, maker of short films and...... a therapist!

I get frustrated with some reactions when they miss the line "he swung possessed with the devil in his chest"....missing that he killed her. It's surprising how many actually miss that, some never catch it, even through the whole story. Very happy that you caught it. Also, for "Screech's Tale", it seems that almost no one catches that Screech's girlfriend and his friend Patrick, happen to be "busy", or not available, at the same time. Consider why. Maybe they were together? Patrick wasn't home...was he with Screech's girl at her place and that's why she was "busy"? It adds a whole other layer to the story. Also consider that Jenny and Screech were born side by side, and essentially died side by side, one street apart. Born on the same day (2005), died on the same day (2019). An entire family, mother and twins that never knew each other, wiped out by a cycle of violence. An abused mother, a 14 year old prostitute, and a 14 year old thug/murderer. Powerful stuff. Not sure if you caught it or not, but he did all 3 songs in a single take each, just like "Hi Ren". In the "Violet's Tale", the way he uses the acoustics of his environment to accentuate the song is absolute brilliance. The man is truly special.

You are the first person I've seen who got that Jenny was a street walker "she'd walked this street 1000 times" in high healed shoes, wanted to escape etc. at 14 years old. it doesn't become clear until the end of Violets' tale by which time most have missed the details of Jennys' tale.

Nice reaction. The only thing I would say is I dislike when reactors have subtitles on. I get that it's to be inclusive to the hearing impaired, but the hearing impaired would have subtitles/closed captions turned on on their own device, or else they wouldn't know what you were saying as well since subtitles are only for the music. So it's not needed and only distracts from the video. I watched your eyes and you kept looking down to read and then back up to watch. It wouldn't be as bad, but the CC is wrong a lot so you miss things. CC says her father took a tie, but in reality, her father tucked her in at night and never left the room. CC states she grew up with violent stars instead of violent starts. It completely changes the song and if you are reading and not listening you don't get the complete story. Not taking away from your reaction. Just an observation.

So im finally going to comment on one of these here. Because no one has ever mentioned it as a thing. But at the end of Violet's Tale when violet says "Please let my baby stay alive" it keeps the reveal of twins a secret because of the way its said because is that what she said or could she have said "let my babies stay alive"? because with stay the next word it can be heard as both baby or babies. I have always loved that detail. Honestly I don't 100 percent know if Ren meant it that way or not but I always thought it was neat so im hopeful that was his intent with that structure. See if Violet knew she was having twins it doesn't really change much story wise but I like the idea of just a random minor detail like her knowing that she was having twins.

This is very much in the tradition of a Shakespearian tragedy and medieval minstrel/bard. I've heard it's at least loosely based on a true story of a 14 year old on trial for killing a woman. How much of the rest is accurate vs. artistic, I don't know. Ren has apparently setup several videos to be released while he's still in Canada getting treatment for all the damage done by his misdiagnosed Lyme's disease and other health issues. I look forward to seeing those and seeing reactors cover them. If you like rap/hip-hop, he has several videos along those lines. It's not my usual genre, but he's so good, that I've actually enjoyed them as well. There also his old band The Big Push with a lot of their busking videos.

You may miss the odd word but 99% of them are perfectly audibly legible. The subtitles willl mess up many more words than you'll miss by just listening. Focusing on the performance also pulls you in, meaning you miss even less. :)

As I've read it both Jenny and Screech were real people. Ren read the newspaper one day in 2019 and buried on the 6th or 7th page was a short "write-up" [I guess you'd call it] on the tragic death of two teenagers; a girl, Jenny [a young prostitute], and her killer [proper name James somebody] known in the Neiborhood as Screech. [Both 14 or at least Screech was] [the article ended calling it such a shame] He thought that kind of news [of the decay in society that resolves in such ways] deserved more attention. So, he wrote the first two of the trilogy shortly after reading of them. These few years later he took on the task of writing a fictional story to further drive home the point that this continuing cycle of violence and decay in society should be paid attention to. So, the entire Violet story he designed to fit the personalities of those two and how they are made. Very impressive writing [and storytelling] and motivation resulted in Violet's Tale. Easily imagined they were brought up in separate foster homes. Jenny took on the quiet nature [still nature] of her mom [freezing in her tracks, unable to move when commanded to give up her goods] while Screech took on the character of his father. 14 years after two zero zero five they met each other probably for the first time and a newspaper article on the 6th or 7th page is what became of it. [as Ren has imagined it for us] His story telling has purpose. Real purpose. That is what has him stand alone [it seems] in today's society. [unique as an artist]

“He swung possessed with the devil in his chest” doesn’t mean he killed her, that would be nothing more than an assumption because in no way can one come to the conclusion he killed her from that line. The line that tells the listener that he killed her is actually “and the statue that she was turned to butter in a breath”
@thehazelinthejane
@thehazelinthejane Год назад
I agree with you but if we're truly being technical even that second line doesn't say that she died. Because she could have just fallen "turned to butter in a breath" after being stabbed and she could still be alive but injured. I suppose that means that the part that really tells us that she actually died is when the narrator, Ren, changes to past tense and says "I guess that she escaped".
@Penddraig7
@Penddraig7 Год назад
@@thehazelinthejane if that was the case, she wouldn’t have turned to butter, she would still have been statue-like, a concrete statue that the knife had sliced through, the fact she was alive was what made her statue-like, like concrete, it was the loss of life, her becoming lifeless, that made her butter. The very thing that made her statue-like no longer existed so she turned into butter. When you carry an alive person it is much easier than when you try and carry a dead person, hence the term dead weight, the person having life and not having life is the single determiner for that phenomenon. She has consciousness, that’s why she becomes statue-like, it requires consciousness to become statue-like, we are not statue-like by default and we only become statue-like when we are dead when rigor mortis kicks in. So when someone is being statue-like and they die, they will stop being statue-like, when that consciousness is gone, she no longer can keep that conscious form and she turns into butter in a breath, her last breath. Butter is used because of the saying cuts like a hot knife through butter, it melts the butter as it cuts through, that solid butter melts and you end up with a lump of butter in a puddle of melted butter. So it’s also telling you she is lying in a puddle of her own blood. So much is said in that one sentence. He did a great job of setting up the context so to make that final sentence of the final verse more impactful without needed to over elaborate to say what he wanted to say, it was very deliberate. Then now that he has concluded the story in the final verse, he alters the chorus to reflect that change in circumstances from the beginning of the story to the end of the story, the “chorus” bookends the story.
@goobydoot

@charg1nmalaz0r51

what is this debate even about, every line and implication from the section suggests she is dead, especially the bit where she is "asleep" and finally escaped. Stevie kills Violet and goes to jail for the rest of his life. The twins are thrown into the Social Welfare/Foster system! 14 years later Screech comes across Jenny (high heels Prostitute) and murders her! Who comes up with a story like that? I wonder? Did this really happen? Or did Ren come up with this in his mental ill mind?
@thehazelinthejane

First, James is Screech. Stevie is Violet's dad. Also, The first part of the story was based on an article that Ren read in the newspaper were a 14-year-old boy killed a young prostitute. The line "it's such a shame" is because there was a quote from one of the officers on the scene who commented on the crime saying "they were so young it's such a shame" or something along those lines. The origin story of Violet, which of course was written and released a couple of years after the initial two stories, was all Ren.

(ABOUT ILLEST OF OUR TIME) Posted by Ren on his community page: "Overhwlemed by the amount of support for illest Of Our Time. Have been loving watching all the reaction videos and hearing everyone's interpretation. I never usually break down my own words because I love letting people apply their own meaning, but there was one line I wanted to explain. The title of the song. Alot of people took this to mean "The greatest Of Our Time" "Look for all the answers that I never seem to find, Till then I guess I'm still the illest of our time" Its my reluctance to be the illest - the clue is in the word 'guess' - ive spent the better part of a decade looking for solutions to the damage lyme disease dealt with countless doctors visits, and am still in that boat. "Illest" can also mean "dopest" "best" etc. So it's a bit of a double entendre. Same as "Sick boi" This theme is repeated with the line "elementary dear Watson you might find" cause Sherlock Holmes was always searching for the clues to piece the puzzle together, which is very relatable when trying to piece together parts of a very complex health picture, anyone with a very complex illness will relate to almost having to become your own detective. And finally "A pathologic entity - if everything is set in stone then this is how its meant to be" Acceptance that this might just be the cards I've been dealt. To search for answers and simultaneously accept that chronic illness may be your fate is a bit of a paradox because it is the rejection of acceptance that spurs you forward in the pursuit of answers, but it is the acceptance that you may always be sick that let's you lead a more peaceful life... so one must walk this contradictory line between both opposing states to have the motivation to find the answers whilst not being so outcome dependent. Still haven't mastered this, but think it's an interesting concept" posted by Ren Gill (The Illest of the Ill) Me: To me it's like Ren is psyching himself up to get bigger, how much bigger? Big enough to have the power to create a standardized treatment for Lyme Disease & an early detection system... hyuge you gotta be hyuge. That takes millions upon millions upon millions of dollars, but Ren ain't rich never has been most of the money goes to medicine. Some of the reactors have more subscribers than he does. that's why he feels like Atlas sometimes maybe like the weight of the medical world is on his shoulders but he can't shrug it off. he got a go fund me for his medical bills but I doubt it covers much medicine is crazy expensive.

Sea Shells on the sea shore in high Ren is a reference to money game part 2 The Accuser Ren uses it against Ren The Hope mockingly you might like Money Game especially part 2. I think he wanted to use the song against the love of money, it is after all the root of all evil the thing is just a tool but the game is a dirty dirty game.

It’s a terrible story (the outcome) that’s written in such a compelling way. Then you get to the performance part of it and, again, Ren kills it. I enjoyed your reaction, so I’m +1 on the sub list and looking forward to what you do next.

I dont get it, you seem to genuinely be a fan of Ren, but then you have only reacted to a couple of his videos 🤔 or am i missing them ? Im sorry if im wrong, i just couldnt see them. He is so unique and has a huge amount of content out on youtube. Hes a genius despite all that he suffers with. Anyway, great reaction. Take care.

Huge mistake to read through auto-generated and butchered up subtitles during the whole thing, instead of watching and listening to this piece of art the way it was meant to be, in your own native language.

He's shining a light on generational violence and really really bad parenting, not to mention society's failings in the form of children lost and forgotten by the system. He does not shy away from dealing with subjects many would just as soon ignore, as we go whistling through the graveyard.

The "she sells sea shells on the sea shore" bit in Hi Ren was making fun of himself because he used that nursery rhyme as part of an explanation of economic theory in Money Game, part II. I strongly recommend Money Game, and Money Game, part II. The first part is ... difficult to watch at times, but the payoff is there for watching both parts.
