The castle on a hill above the Ropa River was built in two stages: construction began in the first half of the 19th century. 16th century and completed in 1585-1590. The structure in the form of a Renaissance fortified manor house was built of local broken stone supplemented with brick. The three-story building was built on a rectangular plan with towers in each corner. The manor took its final shape in the second phase of construction: the building was topped with an arcade attic, sgraffito decorations were made, and the windows were given decorative stone frames. In addition to Renaissance decorations, the building is also equipped with a system of loopholes located at the height of the attic. Therefore, the castle had a representative, residential and defensive function. It was the headquarters of the then owners of Szymbark and the surrounding area, the Gładysz family. In later years, despite changes of owners, the castle itself did not undergo any major reconstruction. Only in the 17th century were the cracking walls of the manor house reinforced with external buttresses made of stone and brick, while in the 18th century internal partition walls were added. The current appearance of the complex is the result of a series of conservation and revitalization works carried out after World War II, in particular the renovation in the 1950s, when the wall buttresses were removed and the original Renaissance style was restored. Currently, the castle in Szymbark is used as an exhibition and conference center, constituting a leading example of a Polish Renaissance fortified manor house.
