I saw Scotto in these roles shortly after her poorly received Norma. Angelica brought out the absolute best in her singing and acting. There wasn’t a dry eye in the theater. Scotto at her artistic peak.
When she falls down in front of the Madonna and screams MADONNA SALVAMI from that moment on I cannot stop crying, had to watch the video several times to get the whole scene always interrupted with uncontrollable sobbing...it is like giving a bath to your soul...She and Callas have that power to be so true (nb. Callas only sang Suor Angelica in a student s performance in Athens so Callas is not the reference here)
Modern sopranos who say that old school singers only stand and sing could well learn from Mme Scotto how to act on stage. Fabulous performance in every way.

I had the very good fortune to see her at the Met in 77 doing Suor Angelica. I remember next to nothing about the performance, so am interested to search out the DVD.
