Well, I am 68 years old, but I don't feel like a old man. I remember my very first Tebaldi performance at the Met, 1958 BUTTERFLY. I was 16 and in LOVE.. Little did I realize that night, that 8 years I would meet Renata and become a very close friend. Many dinners, parties and wonderful times were shared with this beautiful woman. She called me from her home in San Marco in 1998 and invited us to come to Italy for her birthday. I miss her friendship and the feel of her hand and her smile.

Oh, Richard, you are indeed extremely lucky to have been the the company of this great lady! I am also 68. You were smart enough to follow opera all these years. I only started getting very into it during this crazy pandemic. I have missed so much in the way of all this, but discovering it this late is better than never having done so at all.

Tebaldi will always be remembered as one of Italy's most gifted sopranos of her era. I don't know why she must be compared to Callas who has her own respected legend. No theatrics here. But she is musically perfect. She is performing the way she was trained (pre-television) and the way most female singers of her day always performed. in concert.

Renata Tebaldi has one of the most exquisite voices for Puccini Arias...smooth as cream, polished like silver. I can't get enough of her. When my kids were small and fussing in the car, we put Renata's performance of O Mio Babbino Caro (from Pavaroti's collection of Arias) on the CD player and the kids quited down with a look of blissful wonder on their faces. I am really at a loss to understand how these two sublime artists could have ever been compared. Tebaldi had a ravishing vocal endowment and she was a wonderfully disciplined artist. No reason whatsoever to compare her and Maria Callas. Both had different attributes, sought different artistic goals, and really specialized in their own respective repertoires. Tebaldi was a modern Twentieth Century soprano whose repertoire was rooted in Puccini and the verismo composers, as well as a few Verdi roles. Ms Tebaldi’s voice is bright and girlish and dark and angry and hopeful and playful, as -I think- the voice of Choi Choi in Madame Butterfly should sound. Callas' art was rooted in a much earlier period (bel canto) and she had a three octave range which enabled her to undertake everything. Callas did perhaps not have the vocal velvet of Tebaldi. She was a different artist altogether. Bashing one against the other is stupid and shows an innate ignorance about music. Two different artistic approaches COMPLETELY. Both divas defined a period in Italian opera that we will not likely encounter again.

I totally agree with everything you wrote. Often this kind of opposition is only due to newspaper sellers who create antagonisms that do not exist, just to sell paper. I don't know enough about the lives of either of them to know if this opposition was real between them, but I know that it is vain and useless to oppose or even compare artists. Are we comparing Monet and Picasso or Mozart and Bach or Durer and Cranach or Beaumarchais et MArivaux? It's totally nonsense and I don't want to know anything about that kind of nonsense when I'm listening or watching or reading an artist. He is him and there is no point in comparing him.

That is a perfectly placed tone. It has point, brightness and above all BEAUTY. Her phrasing was lovely, her voice was even - top to bottom. Her pronunciation , of course was perfect. She looked beautiful....what else could we ask of this paragon of voice?
@davidgould9431
@davidgould9431 4 года назад
@george prentice "what else could we ask...?" Some engagement with the text, perhaps? Her suggestion that she might throw herself in the river ("andrei sul Ponte Vecchio, ma per buttarmi in Arno") was delivered beautifully, but might as well have been "... so I could buy some nice flowers". I don't think any father would be much convinced that his daughter was at her wit's end. Lovely voice, but doesn't (on this occasion) deliver the emotion the text demands. Last-minute thought: maybe that's the fault of the music - if you deliver what's written, it's lovely but empty of emotion. Nice tune, who cares what it's about? Perhaps Puccini wasn't having a good day that day.

Agreed!Most tend to sing this slow, some almost sleeping,( Callas sang like this too, not going to mention most sopranos singing so slow , like sleepwalking or groggy Lauretta hehe,just to show off voice at some parts that are not contextualized),actually Lauretta has urgency , addressing to her father with worry and some anger,pleading,,begging and threatening him that she would kill herself ....i dont think she is too rushed like a lot claimed here, maybe a little bit slower would be good too, anyway, she was one of few possessing such a free, projecting,big voice live and with such an angelic homogeneous voice and beautiful legato..

It was Renata Tebaldi's misfortune to be compared to Callas. Tebaldi was a great singer in her own right with a beautiful voice in her young years. They did not sing exactly the same repertoire,but like Callas she found Top C a difficult note- certainly from the middle of her career onwards.Her performances have left those fortunate enough to have heard them with precious memories.

This wasn0t actually a concert, it was done as a program for the CBC in Toronto. This isn't too fast, it is the right tempo, it is far too often one as a great tragic lament, which it isn't. It is a young girl twisting her father around her little finger. I personally consider Callas the greatest vocal artist of the ast century, but it is absurd to keep comparing the two of them. Both were wonderful in thier own ways, and there is no reason we can't admit that they iften performed the same arias equally well, even if usually very differently.
@Alrightythenihope
@Alrightythenihope 8 лет назад
Lol sorry to bring you back to this comment one year later, but I just have to respectfully disagree with your comment of it not being a "tragic lament etc." I think that it is left to interpretation, and it is an artistic choice to perform the song as a lament or a persuasive plea. I personally am partial to the tragic lament because of the words. She's truly begging her father, practically on her knees and saying that she'll throw herself in the river Arno and commit suicide if she can't marry her true love. I find the aria much more moving when interpreted this way, but that's just my opinion. I just wanted to point out that it isn't simply one or the other.

@Jangle2007 Being totally honest I think none sings "O mio bambino caro" as she does ! her voice is like a fairy and still powerful, she can being ; Suicidio! and still her voice will sound so feminine, ethereal and still earthy. I have never be part of the Maria & Tebaldi game, even though I am a blind fan of Callas, I believe that they were two different planets. Tebaldi's voice is incomparable. I love Tebaldi's Madalena from Andrea Chenier, I guess we are the lucky for having both!
