My 2003 1.5 dCi (65) was running slightly cool and the temperature needle would drop by one or two notches with the engine under low load conditions, such as motorway driving.
It never used to do this and the needle would always stay in the centre under all driving conditions.
These symptoms are indicative of a thermostat that is failing in the open position, so I changed it.

Dear Comrade. After I watch your video, I check my coolant temperature gauge and saw the same symptoms in my Clio 2 1.5 dci. I made it replaced. Surprisingly, my air conditioner problem was solved. It was not working when the engine was cold or sometimes working then stops or when the switch was on but it was not working but it stars again etc, etc. Now it is working perfectly. I have found K9K engine control unit document and when I look, I saw that the operation of AC is depending on the cooling fan and the coolant temperature. I also have heating problem in the winter. But in our city, the weather is not so cold in the winter. Therefore I was ignoring it al the time. Thank you very very much.

An easy change. I've done it several times. Don't forget, if you do let the coolant spill out it contains anti freeze which tastes nice to, but is highly toxic to pets. Keep them out of the way and clear it up so they can't get to it afterwards.

I did a thermostat replacement on my 2002 1.5 dCi a few weeks ago and shes running better but I still have that coil light on the dash that stays on permanantly, I've never seen or heard the electric fan running even after a speedy run down to southampton and back, I've tested the fan works with a spare 12v battery

I've barely ever heard the cooling fan on my Clio: it's a small, thermally-efficient engine pulling around a light car so this doesn't surprise me. A motorway journey is not the best time to see if your fan is working: air smashing into your radiator at 80+mph is extremely effective at cooling. Sit for 2hrs in stationary traffic on the M4 (inset hated motorway of choice here) however and I'll bet you a Toblerone that the fan will come on a number of times.

Great vid, i have the k9k engine in a qashqai with same symptoms. Out of interest did you replace just the thermostat or did you replace the whole thing including plastic housing?👍👍

Thanks, I replaced the whole plastic housing with the new thermostat included. I can't remember if the thermostat is available or possible to change separately from the housing.

Any trips for removing the ECU? I can't get the metal cover that goes over the connectors off, I've already resorted to pry bars. Thanks

It was probably the single most annoying thing I've ever done on any car. I used a selection of pry bars, screw drivers and swear words. Eventually the cover yielded but only after it was thoroughly mangled. I chucked it into the bin; the car works just fine without it.

Hi Komrad. How many screws are removed from the bottom radiator plate to get to the radiator hose?

I don't recall my car having this plate. Perhaps a previous owner removed it.

Hey mate, I have a question to ask you and you seem to know your way about the Clio II. I bought a boost gauge for it, however I don't know where I can plumb in a t-piece and run a vacuum line. Could you possibly enlighten me on this please? Was told to give the MAP sensor a try, but on most models it has a nipple that you can attach a vacuum line directly to it, but it seems to be different on a Clio II. Thanks in advance!

Hello mate, I'm afraid I have no experience with boost gauges. You might have to get a bit 'creative' with the pressurised side of the inlet tract with a drill... Why are you fitting the boost gauge? Is there a problem you're monitoring or have you upped the boost pressure?

@@KomradeShotabollokov I'm gonna get it remapped at some point, so I'm just preparing everything beforehand. Gonna get a custom intake for a podfilter made, and an intercooler too. Gonna see if I can source one from an E90 BMW diesel. And ah, I don't have the skill to do that, so probably will take it to someone to get it fitted. Thanks mate!

I have not needed to access the speedometer on my car but I would assume it is housed within the gearbox/differential, with a wiring connector supplying the feed to the dashboard.

Well your V5c will have some more detailed info but beyond that, you may need to ask someone knowledgeable to look at the engine to determine more fully. For the Clio II there are 3 versions of the 1.5 dCi: 65, 80 and 100PS. Mine is the non-intercooled 65PS but the thermostat may be different for the intercooled 80 and 100PS versions.

Hi, I have the same symptoms in my Clio 2. Before replacing the thermostat, did you also have heating system not heating enough? (cold blower air). Thanks.

No, mine was still nice and warm, but I had no leaks or air locks in the system and my thermostat was stuck in the open position (the engine was being over-cooled). If the thermostat was stuck in the closed position this may have had an impact on coolant flow to the heater matix if the take-off was located after the thermostat. If your heater isn't hot anymore and your thermostat is stuck open you may have a blockage, an air lock, or you may be loosing coolant; either way it's worth looking at ASAP.

@@KomradeShotabollokov Ok thank you. Yes I am pretty sure that my thermostat is locked open because when car is runnig but not moving the temperature is Ok. But when I begin to drive especially in highway the temp drop too much. Also if I start the heting blower the temp drop. At first I get a little of heat but quickly air became cold. I will change the thermostat and flush the circuit and I will see. Thanks a lot.

Engine was rocking backwards and forwards quite easily while you were working on it... you checked that lower dog bone engine mount?

IIRC it was entirely disconnected. The thermostat wasn't the only job on my list that day.

That there was a DTC set in the car's ECU. I never got to the bottom of that code and didn't experience any engine running issues.

I believe there was one or more connectors to remove then it could be pulled out, however getting the steel protective cover off beforehand was a nightmare.

I have problem with Clio 2 1.4 16v 72KW. Temperature needle comes up on second or maby third one after long drive (50-100km). I have tried with thermostat replacement, and everything is the same after change, there is no idle temperature. @ferkemall i replaced whole housing because on my car u cannot buy only thermostat. It is implemented in plastic with sensor. Its new, both , sensor and thermostat and i still have problem. Put new radiator, new water pump, antifreeze...

@ferkemall when car idles for some time, temperature needle stays on half of scale, just in the midle, and that is ok. Bit, when i start driving and reach higher speed, temperature start to drop.

@ferkemall it depends on outside temperature. If its cold outside, like 5-10 degrees, then it will drop a lot, on ¼ of scale. If its hot, about 30 degrees, it will drop a little, and i need higher speed to produce that.

@ferkemall sensor unit - u meanz engine coolant temperature sensor? What is gauge? I think thermostat stays open all the time. Hoses are all hot a few minutes after starting the engine. What controls thermostat? Its mechanic component as i know.

Hello, I have a problem with my Renault Clio 1.5 dCi. I am German and my English is not perfect, but I'm stuck and don't know what to do next. My vehicle often stalls or nearly stalls while idling and then recovers. Sometimes it even shuts off completely, and other times it runs rough. This issue only occurs when the car is idling. Used google translate:) Can we chat somewhere so that you can help me find the error and solve the problem, please?

Hi Omer, it's difficult to help diagnose without looking at the car but I would start by checking for DTCs (are there any lights on the dashboard?). I have used DDT2000 before, and also a cheap wifi/Bluetooth OBDII reader from ebay and an app. It may be a fuelling/injection issue but it's best to scan for codes first.

Hello, thank you for your answer. Injection should be fine. It showed 1 injector, which I also replaced. I have this spiral that shines very often but disappears and comes back again. And now the engine light also lights up red and STOP also lights up red. and I really have a lot of air bubbles in the hose. I think the bubbles are causing the engine light because there are too many of them
