Wonderful hommage to my favourite car. My uncle had bought the 1st generation around 1985 and allowed me to try it although I had made my driver's license only quite recently before. It was very unusual with that huge windscreen far in front of me. And I remember it was really quiet inside compared to most other cars I knew. Then I almost forgot about it until the early 90s when I worked at an IT consulting company where we had the 2nd generation with the V6 engine as an executive car, and I sometimes could use it for visits to customers. That engine was marvellous, although the instrumentation was unspectacular and didn't look as sleek as in some other cars of the time. A few years later, our neighbour who had bought two gen. 3 (JE), one for his family and one for his business, really convinced me what a practical and beautiful car it is. Everything was new in the JE, including the then very innovative central display. It was comfortable and easily configurable, with the seats sliding on rails, an incredible number of huge compartments to stow everything, even cooled, nice fabric applications everywhere and aircraft-like interior lighting. Wonderful. After we had moved to a different city and needed a more spacious car for our growing family, we also purchased a (used) JE which was just beautiful in every aspect. Since then I had another JE and now the second JK. I guess this won't be my last Espace although our first JK (gen. 4) which was an early-production model gave us some trouble initially, and although I feel the 4th generation is in some regards less sophisticated and not as "living-room-like" as the JE (3rd gen) was. But it is still the best thing I can imagine that comfortably accomodates 7 people plus luggage on a long journey, while looking and feeling like a car and not a bus. Although I was very disappointed initially about the 5th generation because its passenger compartment is so much lower and not as flexible, and because the 3rd row seats are not that great, I've actually begun to like it in the meantime. But of course in the 3rd and 4th generation I can, for example, transport fully assembled mountainbikes upright in the rear, which I would seriously miss.
This is a wonderful tribute to one of the world's most famous leisure activity vehicles, the mighty Renault Espace but trust me I like the Mk2 and the Mk3 Espace the most.
I have an Espace 2 and love it to bits...sad I know but it is soooo versatile and with a diesel engine it's marvelous. Never seen an Espace 5 here in the UK.
Espace 5 is smaller than my Scenic... you cannot really call it an espace anymore, and having owned an Espace III, the Espace V is singularly lacking on interior "espace"...
I have a mark 3 espace love it's my third the trouble is the parts for them are drying up so they have to be sold for scrap value shame Renault won't make the parts for them to keep them running.if you do find parts there an arm and a leg price hike job .come on Renault don't let us down.
They obviously never heard of Ol' Chrysler Corporation's effort with the Caravan, Voyager & Town&Country... That was intro'd in '84 [in the 'States] and has endured just as well!
+ankhaa battulga What...? Did I remind you how Renault got bought-up by Chrysler, only so they could obtain the Jeep marque? Or how the one Renault product they sold in the 'States was rebadged... And turned-out to be a rolling pile-o-crap, along with their transmissions when used in apps with real power to them?
They still build the Espace (although its technically an SUV, but thats predominantly styling more than a radical phyiscal change), but they don't make it in RHD as market is too small.
I have the 3rd generation with 2.0 8V engine --> 1:10. Purchased for €500 in 2016. Engine is not an innovation (still without automatic valve clearance compensation in 1999). The Renault electrics and chassis are generally terrible. The spring plate was rusted through and had to be replaced with a used one. These have become extremely rare, since just a few years after the generation change at Renault, they are no longer available as spare parts (wanted obsolescence?). Repairs at Renault are extremely expensive (also with the Scenic). Otherwise mine is still driving (as a second car). TÜV until 2024. Last emissions test of the control loop test only passed with alternative method.
