Render96 is a free-to-play fan modification for Super Mario 64. The goal of this project is to match the promotional artwork used for the game during the late 1990's. Every model and asset was 100% recreated using images found online from the Nintendo 64 era. The Render96 team does not condone the use of piracy or any other illegal action that may directly harm Nintendo or its intellectual properties.

Yo! Hope everyone enjoyed the video! Not sure when the update will drop but we’ve come to an agreement to just release the trailer. This will be the final video I will make for Render96, but because the project will still receive updates, it is titled “Definitive Trailer” and not “Final Trailer” Anyone is welcome to take my role and make trailers for any remaining content. Contact DorfDork. I’m burnt out on Mario 64 and want to move on and work on different projects. As a huge fan of Super Mario 64 and the Render96 project, everything has been a learning experience! it’s been an honor to be the guy who made the trailers as awesome as possible. @@pooticus2087 Guess it's just down to personal preference. But what's not to love? This mod adds so many upgrades--improved visuals, controls, performance, all while respecting the art direction of the original game/promotional artwork. I still love the original, but the level of polish and attention to detail + quality of life improvements makes Render96 the definitive version in my eyes.

@@MrSafira13 They already did. Look up Ship of Harkinian. The decompilation is complete as of a few days ago, now it's just a matter of time before all the mods and upgrades finish and become available. The render96 project is already at work on Ocarina of Time.

I'm never gonna agree to calling this the "definite" version of SM64, but this is still a really cool project! This project is kind of like a fun "what if" thought experiment turned into reality.

I think a lot people are looking too deep into the “Definitive” term. I really only called it that because everything was originally titled Final/Ending and it isn’t the final anything yet. I designed the video as a marketing E3 trailer since the whole theme of the mod is recreating promotional artwork, I felt it made sense to base the trailer off that idea too. Genuinely did not mean any harm or had any intentions of pissing people off the SM64 community.

That use of Homebound by Feint at the start had me flashing back to the PM days. What a powerful song, probably for the best it didn't play for too much longer or I might've been in a trance for the rest of the video, haha. You guys have done so much work on this and it looks incredible. It's amazing just how much a group of dedicated people are able to achieve.

The coolest thing about Render96 imo is that it plays in full stereoscopic 3D on a 3DS with CFW and it looks FANTASTIC. If you have a 3DS I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend trying it out - it blew my mind

You need to “jailbreak” the 3ds, meaning you add custom firmware that allow you to unpack CIA files into running games - the CIA file for this game is found in the HShop, an online ROM depository

Yo, were so close to the sm64 "Remake" we've all been wanting especially now that higher poly maps are on the way. I've seen a bootless star mod that keeps you in the level after getting certain stars like the Womp King star and it fades to black and the tower appears so you get the last star without reloading the level. That's some convenient stuff, all they need left is some warps that allow you to get back from enter only places and something to change the time while in mid level in Tick Tock Clock and we might have the perfect SM64 "Remake."

Cool. I hope at some point, Wario and Luigi can be unlocked at the start as I'd like to play the entire game from beginning to end as either. EDIT: I think it would be interesting to make it seem less like Whomp's Fortress or Cool, Cool, Mountain and similar levels were just floating in a void. The castle paintings for Whomp's or Tall Tall always gave me the idea that isn't actually what they are supposed to be.

I feel like I would make good friends with the people who made this. BTW, I think that promotional artwork they made in the 90's was made on the same SGI computers they used to program the game. A lot of early N64 promotional artwork and box art had similar looking 3d art style. They just used different software for pre-rendered 3d artwork. SGI computers had very different architecture from what was used in typical x86 style computers at the time and even computers today. They also probably used Ray Tracing. Not sure if you already knew that or if any of that helps.

I have to be honest, as a bit of a zoomer type born in the current millennium, when my big brother put in Mario 64 after dusting off the N64 I felt a little ripped off that it didn't look a lot like the picture on the cartridge (but was still happy to see it was a fantastic game that was influential to my childhood). This is some amazing work, huge bravo to everyone involved. I also probably appreciate the extra features more than I should haha. RTX always tickles me in a special way even when it's not necessary, and the addition of the mega milk from the got milk commerical is freaking hilarious. All in all, big, huge, massive props to Render96 for finally bringing the picture on the cartridge to life.
