His dad cares. Rengoku knew his father cared, but regardless of his father being harsh, he stayed happy, kept his head up and stayed loyal. Those were his mothers wishes basically. I think if any of them spoke to their father and brought up about the mother. It will just anger him more and scar him deeper. Rengoku knew about Tanjiro’s good of heart, thats why he wanted him to pay his family a visit to knock some sense into the father, before the little brother gets the worst.

It’s honestly kinda frustrating that no one keeps in mind that Shinjuro has been like this since his wife passed. I know it was only glossed over before, but so far everyone I’ve seen forgets to remember that and thinks that he acts that way just because. Also the amount of people who genuinely can’t tell he was grieving and were unjustifiably angry, even before he started crying, is surprising.

Felt really bad for Shinjuro, mans lost his wife too soon and had to raise two sons who haven't even reach double digit yet. All by himself

The reason Shinjuro kept criticizing and telling Kyojiro that he is worthless and all that was because he didn't want his son to be in the demon slayer corps. He knows the hardships and the danger the job comes with and it multiplies exponentially when you become a hashira. Shinjuro wanted his sons to have a full life, have their own family. His sadness came from the fact that he couldn't do anything when his wife died and he is still helpless when his son got killed.

You need to understand right after devotion to the demon slayer corps took his love away , that wasn't the no. 1 hashira he lost, nor was it his eldest son, or favorite son, it was his baby boy....a part of him...which will break any man.

their family has sacrificed alot for the demon slayers. cuz not matter what the corps always ask that there be a flame breather within the ranks.

the moment Kyojurou asks Tanjirou to tell his father to "take care of himself" I knew I wasn't gonna be ready for this moment. losing a parent is sad but I couldn't even begin to imagine how painful it would feel to lose your own child

The man lost his wife, lost his title and lost his first born son. He's completely depressed and resorted to alcoholism to cope. He's not a bad man, just a deeply broken and sad man.

Well I think the problem is others need to see someone bawling to actually tell if they are grieving or not without actually going through all that the other person went through..some people just don't show their grief by means of bawling.Thats it

Kyujurou said in the bonus chapter in manga that freinds that shares a laugh together dont last long in this world. His father having experience this with his wife, kyujorous mother forced to hate his own children because he loves them So much that he doesn't want them to end up dying but all of those effort are for naught. The pain and regret he must have for spending the precious time in sadness instead of happines.

I know not everyone gets context clues very well; but its crazy the amount of people who will analyze stuff then somehow not be able to tell that Rengokus father was a depressed shell. To look at the Hashira of the present and how strong willed they all are I know he mustve gone through it; just to end up losing his wife then watch his son follow a "pointless" path he wanted to protect him from.

When you take away a son’s life from his father, a son who loves him despite any flaws he might have had…you’ve taken away everything that was good about that father. Every father’s dream is to one day see their son standing tall and proud, for their son to have surpassed him. I feel so sorry for Rengoku’s father who saw it but didn’t SEE it until it was too late…

Cultural difference In the past, japanese fathers tended to avoid showing weakness to their kids. Samurai families are particularly prone to this. Well, not so much nowadays. Nowadays, fathers usually show weakness, but that was the case until the Showa era. The Japanese audience knows from the beginning that the father is really sad in his heart. His younger brother(senjuro) knows that too, so he passed on his brother's will. Kyojuro also understands that his father is really kind, so he took care of dad body. Foreigners blame kyojuro's fathers first, But when they sees his father crying then change their attitude abruptly. And they regret what they was before lol

Imagine as a former Hashira your wife passes away leaving you with your two sons alone. Then imagine your oldest son wants to be like you and accept one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Then imagine you get news of your oldest son has dies because of the dangerous you once had, and you only wanted him to have a career or life away from slaying demons. Imagine the sheer grief a father has to deal with that his oldest boy is dead now because he didn't want to live a normal life.

People don't understand why shinjuro is being harsh always. The only reason he retired from the demon slayer core is because his wife had died at a very early age leaving behind 2 children who were very young at that time. Shinjuro feared that this line of work would be too dangerous because not even a single day was certain that he would come back home to see his children. He had to put his life every day on the line. He feared that if something were to happen to him, his children would become orphans at an early age. So he just quit abruptly. But Shinjuro couldn't become a caring father because he was overwhelmed by the loss of his wife hence he was always drunk to forget his sorrows. On the other hand, his eldest son kyojuro picked up an interest in sword fighting. Kyojuro looked up to his father as an ideal figure and wanted to follow his foot steps. But Shinjuro was furious at him because, he did not want kyojuro to put his life on the line everyday as a demon slayer. He wanted him to live a normal life. The fate what kyojuro suffered is exactly what Shinjuro feared years ago when kyojuro was still young, not having his mother by his side. That's why he says that kyojuro was not talented enough to be in that line of work, and only the strongest of the strongest would even have a hope of survival. You should note that tanjiro, who could easily find out the current mood of a person just by his insane sense of breath, couldn't find out that Shinjuro was actually hurting on the inside despite his harsh behavior. Even a person like Tanjiro, who was the most kind hearted guy, misunderstood Shinjuro and ended up head butting him. This gives you an idea of how mature and responsible kyojuro was at an early age. He lived by his mother's wish. If you observe, during the battle against akaza, when kyojuro's life flashed before him, his mother goes "I was blessed with a stong and gentle child. I have not much to live, I AM ENTRUSTING EVERYTHING TO YOU". Now, any sane dying wife would exactly say the last sentence to their husbands and not their children. But kyojuro's mom did not. Why? Because she feared that Shinjuro would be utterly devastated at her loss, and would not carry out the right duties as a father. And she was right. Shinjuro couldn't be an ideal father, to his children. Hence kyojuro, at such an young age, took on the responsibility of taking care of the family in his mother's absence. He understood his father, and not even Tanjiro could sense this. Which makes this scene even more sad. He has no one to share his feelings.

Rengoku family have been continuously filling the rank of hashira who knows maybe shinjuro also lost his father. Now he lost his son. His reasoning to make rengoku give up becoming demon slayer is completely understandable

Tough love is a double edge sword. Sure, this helped mold Kyoujuro into what he became(a strong hashira) but the moment he lost him he was probably thinking that he should've treated Kyoujuro better.

Shinjuro was a good father. Rengoku remembered him being cheerful and lively like him until his mother died. I bet he was never able to move on and now he also lost his son. His way of grieving is not something everyone would understand just because he is not open about his feelings and not able to pick himself up the way people expect. Sometimes you are just so broken its impossible to get back up and pretend nothing happened. Some people just cant deal with the lost and I hope everyone tries to understand that.

Some of these people can't read emotions. They're telling him to stop drinking, to stand up. It's like telling a suicidal person to stop being sad or to not end their lives. People like this are stuck in a pit. We can't judge them because we don't know if we'd fare better than them.

Rengoku’s death left a huge permanent scar in our hearts

When u think about it sanemi Shinajugawa and Shinjuro possess a ridiculous similarity........ They act as if they don't care but they are the ones who cares the most. Sanemi don't want weaklings in the corps and acts harsh just to prevent avoidable deaths. And if u have read the manga u know how much he loved his brother. The difference between them is just that sanemi was able to show his love and Shinjuro doesn't. Sanemi took up the sword to protect his brother but Shinjuro gave up as he doesn't want his sons to follow him on his footsteps to their deaths. They both tried to protect their loved ones in their own way but in the failed.

I think I prefer the dad over any other character in the anime. A broken Ashira, who outlived his wife, his son, no friends, and everyone thinks of him as a coward because he stopped fighting, and he thought his son hated him. Add on top of that an heir of the most powerful breathing technique, that fought with his son and survived while his son died, coming to apologize about Rengoku's death. I would have expected anyone to draw sword, and not just a fistfight.

I feel like Shinjuro cared more than anyone he just didn't really have the heart to show people that he did

Shinjuro was a retired Hashira, he saw all of the dangers and deaths that come with the sacred oath of protecting mankind from the demons, and he never wanted to have that same fate of his fallen comrades to be bestowed upon his beloved sons. Couple that with Ruka's (his wife) passing and his discovery of the Sun Breathing, he was ultimately broken. Though he still tried to dissuade his sons from becoming slayers, although in a wrong way, yet he still blamed himself for his wife's and Kyojuro's deaths...

I believe that Sinjuro acted the way he did and did the things he did to protect his kids from the pain and suffering he experienced. He went about it the wrong way 1000% but at the end of the day he still loves his kids. I cannot imagine the amount of grief he is going through

I hate when people shit on Shinjuro so hard. Yes, he's a harsh father, and he can be far too many to his sons at times, but he 100% cares deeply for them. He was nothing like this before his wife died, and he never had a chance to handle his own emotions because he had to be strong for his sons. He was so harsh to Kyojiro about joing the Demon Slayer Corp because he knows what happens to people in that line (statistically, Demon Slayers get killed more often than they succeed) and as soon as Kyojiro left to join, I'm sure the only thing going through Shinjuro's mind was a picture of his son sitting on a shrine to him. He can't handle the idea of losing another person he loves, and he doesn't know how to express that properly, becauase hes had to bottle up so much pain, and it lead to him being an alcoholic. I like to think when he went to drink in this scene, it occured to him that only his Kyojiro dead, but the last time they ever spoke was both him yelling at his son, AND he wasn't even sober for it. Just my 2 cents, sincerely, someone who cares WAY too much.

When the original breath user cant kill the demon king (yoriichi almost killing muzan but ya know what happened next) When he finds out you can't kill muzan by beheading him. He knows how dangerous the job is. He lost his wife.
