The tile grout issue is so relatable. I thought I had dark brown grout for 5 years!!! Regular mopping doesn't get all the dirt from grout, especially if it's unsealed. I steamed my floors prior to painting my grout, revealing my very dirty little secret.

I use small towels instead of bath mats. It's more hygienic because I just throw it in the laundry pile after use and grab a new one each time.

I had a roommate who introduced me to cushy padded bath mats that are machine washable and she washed it every week, my mind was blown!

This is such a good idea 😳 I guess my only concern would be the bath towels sliding around? Whereas the bath mats usually have some kind of adhesive?

I hated floor towels growing up because my parents would NEVER wash them, so when I moved out, floor towels in the bathroom gave me the ick. But ofc, adult me now uses towels as bath mats and washes them biweekly. It's horrific how unhygienic my parents were lol

This would be so great as a series. I love that you're into making do. We own our home but I'm cheap and hate waste so I'm always looking for ways to make small upgrades. Love the idea of painting the bathroom ceiling and I'm going to do just that.

My husband and I own our house and we're also cheap and hate waste! Plus we aren't great at DIY so it's the decor and paint that make the difference for us most of the time. Love the suburban house video the most you've ever done, Paige! I keep watching it over and over.

If the person with the litter box in their bathroom isn't able or comfortable cutting a hole in an existing cabinet for a cat door, they also sell cat litter box enclosures that look like little cabinets on places like Etsy, Wayfair, etc. I have one and I actually painted it Chilled Wine by Behr thanks to your tour of Kate's home!

regarding the shower curtain, you could easily make sure you have the kind of hooks that allow you to have a plastic liner curtain AND a solid fabric one on the outside! that way your fabric curtain wouldn't get too moldy :)

I've always taken down blinds, swapped light fixtures and painted, because you just stick them in a closet or under a bed and put them back, paint back to white when you leave 🤷🏼‍♀️ it's a great way to invest in lighting etc to take with you to new places slowly over time

For the hot water heater you could totally attach some cool stickers/prints and make it a statement piece! Or use peel and stick. And for the electrical box, I've seen some cool DIYs where people cover them with framed art.

Yes, that tile was, from my memory, popular in the 90s/00s. Bear in mind, what we had before then was linoleum flooring that looked and felt very very cheap and often had a "busy" design. By the later 90s and 00s, more expensive materials and minimalism were the big rage, and so that tile felt like a nice change.

It’s always worth at least asking your landlord to let you paint and what not. We rented a HORRID little dark townhouse after we had to move unexpectedly and couldn’t find anything else in our budget when we were first married. I started with one or two rooms and when they saw what I had done, they felt confident I wasn’t going to leave them with some horrific mess to deal with after we were gone. Little by little I ended up doing the whole house, including getting them to replace some flooring here and there ( it helped that the toilet literally fell through the ceiling onto our dining table …. ). I re jigged the kitchen in very simple and inexpensive ways that made it more inviting and pleasant to be in. In the end, they liked it so much they put the house up for sale and got a much better price for it than they would have if I hadn’t done the work to it but I wasn’t mad about that. It gave me an opportunity to try out some ideas and made the place livable for us whilst we were there. And I really didn’t spend much money. Even the paint was all off tints I got for a good deal. Often times, the landlord just needs to see that you’re going to make the place better and then they will relax and let you do more. Sometimes even just some paint and accessories helps them see what it COULD be and they might come around to actively wanting to upgrade things like flooring because they can see the value in it. Not always, of course, but it’s worth the try 😊. I think it’s fantastic that you give simple, realistic, practical things for people to try doing, Paige. Some of the content you see out there for renters is totally unrealistic. I mean, I COULD invest a small fortune in command strips and mouldings I may or may not be able to repurpose again and peel and stick wallpaper (which isn’t always cheap and adds up in a hurry). I’ve even seen suggestions for wrapping entire kitchen’s worth of cabinets …. I mean ….. I guess if you know you’re going to be in that place long term and your landlord is for sure not going to replace them ever and you REALLY hate them …

I agree, I thought the kitchen with the exposed stuff was actually cute! Love the white and red combos The little picture of the plant on the furnace/water heater (not sure what it is) made me wonder if they could hang some cute magnets and photos on it like how people decorate their fridges? Idk if that would be a problem with heat but just what popped into my mind

ah thank you! to be honest i don’t notice the furnace most of the time, but periodically i get really angry at it and rack my brains for hours to find a way to conceal it (to no avail) - will try embracing it!! the plant is a sticker that one of the previous tenants left behind, definitely an avenue to explore

Just an idea for the glass block wall, there’s this paint you can buy that comes in translucent and opaque colors and it’s specifically meant for glass. When it drys it’s basically a vinyl window cling so if you don’t like it down the road you can just peel it off. It’s commonly used for fake stained glass art but I’ve used it on all my windows as a privacy film because we have old wood windows with the divided sections making it difficult to use traditional films

What are your thoughts on grout paint? As in not black/grey or white. I was thinking about painting the grout in my ugly rental bathroom a red. The tile is white and the grout is ugly used-to-be-white grey. For the people who want to have frostet glass instead of clear: get some crafting glue, mix it with water and paint the glass with a paint roller (not a paint brush). It'll look funny at first, but once it dries you'll have some frostet glass. And you can peel it off later. I know there are privacy foils for windows, but those can get really expensive.

Thoughts on kitchen island curtains ? I'm on a rental apartment that is a open concept, which I find tough to decorate. Our kitchen island is at the very center of the apartment, right by the entrance. There's two levels of shelving and no backing, so it's completely open and I can't maintain it clutter free and neat.
