Happy Holidays! Today I repaint my favorite Ever After High doll: Justine Dancer. Can I do the original doll justice? Wish me luck!!
The pattern used in this video was the prototype for "DIGITAL Download Doll Clothes Pattern: Shirt & Jeans for Ever After High Boy", which can be found on my etsy shop.
This same pattern is being adapted for Monster High Boys, Monster High Girls, and Ever After High girl dolls. These versions aren't available yet, but will be coming out soon-ish.

Some tips from a person whose been crocheting for a while and has some experience with dolls. 1. Your scarf looks good for a first try but your main problem is tension. You are crocheting pretty loose which is what makes the loops look open and loose at the top. To fix this try pulling the yarn tighter as you go or getting a smaller hook. 2. It can be hard to crochet the small size you need for dolls (especially with a thinner yarn). I would suggest getting good at maintaining tension with the size you have now before going to thinner yarn. 3. You crocheted the scarf long ways which tends to make things more curly. Almost all scarfs are also made working the short way so if you want a smaller scale human scarf then I’d suggest working the other way. (This only really works with thinner yarn though so if you want to keep the weight you have working long ways is fine.) 4. Always remember you can undo crochet from start to finish if you find a mistake just undo instead of starting over. I love the doll and on the off chance you actually read this you’re actually one of my main inspirations for making my own (crochet) dolls and I really like your channel. For anyone else reading this crocheting is really fun and you can do tons of things if you try for a bit and figure it out. There are tons of free patterns, RU-vid videos, and helpful people to get you started.

I'll admit, dolls aren't my area of expertise re: crochet, but yeah, I'd second most of this. Except for the bit about making scarves the short way- I've seen just as many patterns for long ways as for short. Still, glad to see I'm not the only crocheter on here!

@@sumrakdievca Yeah I kinda agree that you could really do it either way most of the time, but I’ve just found that doing it long ways makes it more curly near the ends. If you’re using thicker yarn and only doing two or maybe three rows then long is probably better most of the time but if you do thinner yarn then short looks better (in my opinion). (Also I think it’s really cool that there are other crocheters. It’s always fun to find some of us in the wild.)

@@randomname8232 Fair enough- I've only done one long-ways scarf with what I'd consider "thin" yarn, even that was a sport weight rather than fingering weight, so I consider 'thin' relative. It didn't curl, but like I said, heavier yarn.

As someone who is native I think the doll itself was not harmful. There is a lot of misinformation out there and it’s not her fault that a lot of westernized stories include antlers. Her apology was straight forward and clear, She didn’t intend to hurt and simply wanted to make a fun doll exploring other cultures.

I also really like your response. I, personally, wasn't a fan, simply because of how inaccurate it was, and I felt like that showed a lack of care. Not in a hateful way, but in the way that most white people are, simply because of the lack of education of indigenous cultures. I'm not mad at Dollightful, but I am glad that she apalogized.

I'm here to talk about the wendigo doll since the comments are turned off on that video. I myself am indigenous, my band specifically is cree and my ancestors were the ones to create the tale. Catherine, I want you to know that I personally found no offense to this doll I thought it was wonderful. I strongly believe that people are just too sensitive as someone could make the same arguments about your demon doll as the wendigo. I for one literally have the word "Wendigo" in Cree tattooed on my right hand. This is because it is a celebration of the creativity my ancestors had. Even with all of the dark details that follow. I am in University to become a concept artist and the concept of the wendigo means so very much to me. I absolutely adored that doll. I hope you see this Catherine. I hope you know that you have not let every indigenous person down.

I loved that doll so much and I also have Native American in me. I'm so happy that other people are brave enough to keep that video up because it's not something that should be taken down. Having people of other cultures or ethnicities showing interest in something different from their own is an honor and not something you should be apologizing for.

I'm from the Potawatomi band of indigenous people. I did not find the doll offensive in the slightest. I found it touching that my culture was being represented here. I truly believe this generation we find ourselves in is a mix of over sensitive and none sensitive people. I do not belive dollightful was being none sensitive with her doll. That being said I cannot speak for all of my people. All I can say is that its not like she made an actual regalia outfit and put it on a Caucasian doll and called her Pocahontas. The doll she made was pale skinned do to the cold weather the creature endures. I'm sorry people have come to you Dollightful with nothing but hate in their hearts. I know this isn’t the wendigo video but as a mixed tribe native I found ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with the doll she made. I know people were upset about the skin but I’d like to point out it was for winter and I’d also like to say that there’s light skin natives. Really wish people who more than likely aren’t native and that were offended for ridiculous reasons hadn’t gotten her to take it down. Not often that we see our mythology represented

I've only been finding positive feed back from natives so far, I wanted to find out for myself what was up so I turned to the people that could actually answer. So far I've mainly found out that she thought her interpretation was incorrect (after further research) and that it may be offensive. All the people that have been complaining aren't even (based off of how they worded their comments) native, it's nice that they want to help protect others but they are drowning out your voices. It's crazy to me that people are still whining in the comments all these months later. Honestly it seems really disrespectful to me that people don't think that Catherine has a brain and can decide what she wants to put out there, even knowing it probably won't effect her. We always talk about how we wish creators would listen to their fans, and when one does, everyone goes fucking apeshit because "WELL, I NEVER SAW ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT ALSO I'M 2% NATIVE BECAUSE MY GRANDMA WAS A CHEROKEE PRINCESS, SO I'M CLEARLY YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME." Well, it was misrepresented. Although it may seem nice our culture is being shared, the misrepresentation hurts our culture. For example, the western native American trope depicts us as savages who love bloodshed, this is not at all true. Another reason is cultural genocide. With each time something is misrepresented or appropriated, people give things a different meaning muddying out the original, this is especially harmful to young indigenous people who are trying to learn their culture. I hope this kind of helps show why some were upset over this. (Mitis here)

I think your painted expression gives her more life. Looking at that and the original side by side, the factory paint looks like there’s nothing behind the eyes and not a lot of effort went in. You managed to give her a kind, confident, and knowing expression all at once. That’s something I’ve always admired about your work; there is always so much personality, even if you’re just remaking a doll! P.S. I thought the crochet scarf was banger.

I honestly think you improved Justine's face SO much! As lovely as her original face was, her irises seemed a bit at odds; I also love how vibrant you made them with the face-up. The fact you challenged yourself with the making of both the sweater and hefty coat to end up with these results still blows my mind. You did wonderful, and conveyed a part of winter that is just as important to the aesthetic as the chill in the air!

I am of Native decent, and I am legally Metiś in Canada. I want to say that the Wendigo doll was one of my favourites of all time because everyone shys away from it!!! It was one of the few times our culture was properly represented in art by another culture, and not one of the basic Pocahontas designs. This truly breaks my heart that a few blokes got to you with it being "iNsEnSiTiVe". It's your decision but please know only a few little peaches were offended. We love your creations and the Wendigo story has always been apart of my life ❤

It's probably because the first chain when you crochet somehow always ends up too tight, so her scarf ended up curly. I saw a tutorial on RU-vid once that had a way to start crochet in a way that avoided this problem. @That Idiot Katherine The yarn usually has a recommend crotchet hook size written somewhere on the packaging, so I always stick to that size but still somehow get this problem. Maybe my technique is just terrible or something lol

I’m Navajo and I wanted to give my thoughts about the wendigo doll, you carefully did your research and you properly represented the creature in the doll in the most respectful way possible, and you didn’t whistle when it was night , I think that it was so cool that someone noticed our folklore and culture and wanted to make a doll of it, since everyone always forgets about us and it was just so cool to see us being represented, so I understand if you want to keep the video down and remove the doll from your collection. Since this is the only way many of us are leaving feedback with the comments on the apology video turned off... might as well give my two cents as well. I'm native, the video on the wendigo doll made me very happy. Out of all the doll customization videos I've ever watched it was my favorite. There was so much care put into your creation, so much effort to try and be respectful and just genuinely enjoy something from another culture. Seeing my culture used to inspire such a wonderful piece of art made me feel overwhelming joy. It's true the wendigo isn't just a scary story, it's true it's part of a still active religion, but your interpretation wasn't malicious. It wasn't mocking. You didn't try and take credit for the mythos. People still worship Norse and Greek mythology and the media uses their gods in far more offensive ways. You tried only to show appreciation. I can't speak for other native people, but I personally believe you should put the video back up. Maybe with an aside showcasing more of the research you've done

hey! as a native myself, that particular doll never sat right with me. i wasn't "offended" as everyone simply thinks it's a 'cool native monster' and I've seen it represented in pretty much every media, so it was more uncomfortable than anything. imo it says nothing about your character having created the doll and video, just a lack of knowledge, and your actions when you found out as to why it makes me and others like me uncomfortable speaks worlds. i appreciate you taking the time to address the issue and moving forward to correct it ❤️

This is seen as disrespectful to some because every trope, remake or misrepresentation of the (W) washes away the culture, not saves it. As someone who grew up with the story of the wendigo and all that, I seriously don’t see a SINGLE issue with what she did. It was something she was interested it, she did her research, yeah the antlers weren’t “correct” but it’s common in westernized mythology to use the antlers as the symbol of nature or whatever (idk bout how it’s told now). It looked badass though. My issue with the whole thing is the majority of people who were offended, weren’t even Native American. They were white people with a savior complex. If you aren’t part of that culture, sit down, and let those who actually are speak about it. The stories we were told about the wendigo were cautionary tales about gluttony and all these other different topics. As being Mexican too, I can relate it to La Llorona or El Cucuy. It was just a story we were told to pass a message to us as kids. While yes it did have a more cultural aspect in the past due to famine and other things, it’s become more of a story and such throughout the United States and Canada, even further than that too. I seriously don’t understand why people (especially those who ARENT Native American) are getting worked up over cultural APPRECIATION. Nothing she did was offensive. I for one really loved it. I feel bad that she took the video down but I had to respect her decision.

@@DARA-gi9ci I think the reason it looks like “JO” to him is because the letters in English can be very nuanced and hard to discern (p, q, b, d, etc.), especially in America. Kathrine made the curve of the D a little bit less curved, so it makes the D look a little like a boxy O. Edit: I suppose saying “English letters” is incorrect but I’m assuming anyone with a brain knows what I meant so🤷🏽‍♂️

Love, I’m sorry that you had to experience some of that. I wish people can come off and just say stuff maybe in a nicer way for you to just to research and redo the voice over of the video or something. However, instead you had to delete the whole video and turn off your comments cause people may harass you. In my opinion, (as a Native American) I thank you for sharing something that is apart of our culture. You may have not got it all right, but you actually took time out of your day to do at least some research and spread the doll along with the legend of the Wendigo. Wendigos are personally my favorite legend and I think you did a great job on the doll. I appreciate you making it and sharing a little of the story. We can hear how sorry and sad you are about the doll and what you have done(even tho it wasn’t a bad thing). People are also being way too sensitive and they won’t appreciate you doing something for their culture. You might’ve not gotten the story 100% correct, but you put your creativity and time into that doll. People don’t understand how long it takes you to make those kinds of dolls and all they want you to do is get it 100% right or throw it away. I’m sorry that some people are like that and I wish I can change what so people have said. Since you already deleted the video and threw the doll away then I wish you can heal at this point. I wish that it didn’t upset to the point where you stop making your beautiful creations. If you do stop for a while then that’s fine, love. We’ll be waiting for you ❤️

I’ve come to this video regarding the new wendigo video, and I’m very disappointed in everyone who basically had a go at you for making the video, it was years ago why are people only now saying something about it? That’s what I don’t get with people! They don’t say anything until it’s cool to do so! Why didn’t anyone speak up about it sooner?? Because they can see that you are doing great things and making amazing creative creations and don’t like seeing others succeed! Coming from a canadian indigenous person honestly i think you should have left the video up, you didn’t disrespect. if anything bringing light to it i thought was very interesting, having more new perspectives was nice, people honestly forget about native culture but then when someone acknowledges it everyone that aren’t even indigenous get offended? I thought that it was a good video, good concept, and that you even did research was very nice, i showed my kokum and mosum that video when it came out and they are some of the most traditional people you could ever imagine they enjoyed it especially my kokum because she LOVES dolls and collecting dolls. I just saw ur wingigo apology video and You’re so full of light and positivity I’d never think less of you. Also just make sure you wear eye protection if you’re going to sew over needles. Your sewing pins might bend but ur machine needle might snap and go flying. Love this outfit too!!!!!!!!

About the wendigo doll since the comments were turned off. I'm native American and It never even came to mind that doll would be offensive. I was actually very excited about it when I saw the video.Your interpretation of the wendigo was very interesting and creative. Its unfortunate you took it down because I loved rewatching the video

Addressing the Windigo doll ... I already know some people are gonna be mad about her taking the video down HOWEVER I feel like we should give her credit for being aware and doing what she felt was the right thing to do regarding a long-misunderstood culture. It’s hard sometimes to rationalize what the right thing to do is in a situation like this but she stood true to her values and empathy and I have a lot of respect for her because of it. Whether it was the “right” thing to do isn’t really the issue here. It’s a complex matter and I appreciate how she decided to address it

About the Windygo doll, as a Native American I found it completely fine. There isn’t one type of Windygo they all change depending on the tribe, so I don’t want you to beat yourself up over it. Edit: Also it is the best doll if I’m being honest, I really love it. Edit 2: I honestly think that it was very kind of you to go out of your way to make a doll like that, it’s respectful. You don’t need to apologize for anything.

It shouldn't matter how much melanin or lack of melanin is in your skin you should be free to state your opinion on whatever you want. The problem really is, *and I use "you" as a general term, if you're not a part of a certain race, yet you claim your opinion is the end-all-be-all, but you aren't even the one the so called offense was directed at. So why would you be mad? I'll give you an analogy. I broke your mug, right? And your roommate is offended and thinks it's terrible that I broke your mug, therefore your roommate thinks you should feel the same way. But, you think it's fine, an accident, and you forgive me. So if you forgave me, your roommate's opinion shouldn't be the one I care about.

Since I was unable to comment on your apology video for the windego video this was the next one under it. I appreciate your apology although I dont feel it necessary for the fact of art interpretation. People get butt hurt over the simplest of things. I loved your video and all that you create. Dont try to please everyone, you never will, but keep being true to yourself and making art in the form of your dolls. They are beautiful and so are you!!! I know you as a youtuber need to worry about subscriptions and followers, true fans and true believers in you will follow wherever you go...even if it isnt youtube.
