I just wanted to take the time to thank you for this video. I just bought my Keystone Cougar 5th wheel from a private party and before we even had a chance to use it the landing gear on the passenger side would not move up or down. This caused the motor to stop. I checked the fuse box and everything was good, then I saw the video about the in line fuse!! That was a life saver! I was going to take it in to Camping World but it was a 4 week wait. Then I saw this video. II gave me everything I needed to do the job myself. Turned out to be a gear missing a tooth. Easy fix and now it is back together running great. Thanks you again for the help.
Thank you for making a video and disassemble the leg jack. The same problem is what I have with my 5th wheel leg jack. Collar nut is strip , now I know next time if I have that problem in the future. Ordered 2 each new ones from e-trailer
Glad this was still posted; my driver's side 2010 Montana leg went kaput also; went about 3 inches up, but wouldn't catch after that. Once on the truck, the retracted leg could be pulled down about 3-4 inches and then "catch" (presumably on the worm gear). Seems to be a common problem. We bought this just shy of 1 year ago and this is the first major failure. I bought insurance on it because we complete newbies to RVing. The shop can't get me in for another week to submit the claim. Like any insurance policy, it's all about presentation and insurance codes. Hopefully everything will be covered without hassle. You do an awesome job in explaining and showing all the detail. I think with this video and a buddy's help, we could've done this, but that's what I have the insurance for...so, we'll see. Thanks again!
Glad it helped a bit. I often wonder if this problem is caused by RV repair places that use fork lifts to move trailers around the lot. I've watch a bit and some guys aren't so gentle when they drop them. Just a guess. Hope you get it fixed in a timely manner. Cheers, Ray
I replaced the landing legs on my 2011 keystone cougar, this video is absolutely right on the mark! Repair quote was over one thousand dollars!! Purchased kit from etrailer for under $150 and changed them myself in about twenty minutes!! Thankyou !!
Found your video when mine went bad yesterday. Looks pretty straight forward. Thanks

For high tension screws, grease is better, always. Great job. I was puzzled by the system ( I don't have jacks on my rig) but obviously you've fiddled with it a few times! That was a very entertaining video. Thanks again and have fun at Rio Grande!
Great work! I own a 2011 KZ Durango. Bought it 18 months ago. I have no idea if my landing legs & gears have ever been lubed. They are very slow, and now I think I know why. I will be inspecting them this season.
I saw another video this evening about greasing the worm gear. They took a length of clear tubing that 'just' fits over the worm gear, and fashioned a zirk fitting on one end with a plug and hose clamp. Slide the tubing over the worm gear and pump the grease to it!
The shaft that comes out of the top with the two holes in it. The end hole broke off, the one that holds the square tube going to the other side. I have to replace the shaft. All the rest of the worm gear and motor look. OK. Thanks for showing how to punch out the plug to get the shaft out. Hope I can get just the shaft without having to get the whole leg assembly.
That is our exact same trailer and I had the exact same problem...on the lead side.....You didn't show how the cross member and post connect to the gear box....was it easy? Is it straight forward like it looks?
Yes, it was simple to remove. Here is a clip showing that ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FPqGDThLl0k.html They use an Allen key headed bolt and nut.
Another great video! Very helpful! I just wish I had as much room in the front of our 5th wheel. We have generator and propane tank storage up front - makes for tight work. Thanks again!
Nice job, Ray. Good explanation of the entire system. Don't know if a zerk would work here as it is not an enclosed space, but a couple of 3/8"-1/2" (10-12 mm for those so inclined lol) holes with rubber dust plugs should be enough to stick the end of a grease gun in.
RxMixer Thanks. That's likely to be the simplest, which is usually the best solution. :) Another way I read online was to take the legs out once a year, unwind and drop the bottom part of the leg out that has the collar nut, lube it and then take some PVC pipe cut out part of it length wise and put the grease in it and shove it up inside to incase the worm gear. Cheers Ray
Love Your RV Interesting idea, although it might (?) be a tad messy in hotter weather. But then again the type of lubricants (brake grease?) we're looking at are specifically made for high temps, so it just may be a try it and see situation. I for one will be interested. Keep us informed! Thanks!!
Another excellent repair video. I don't have landing legs on my camper, but always like to see the insides of mechanical things. I think I would keep the extra leg as a spare in case you have the same problem with the worm gear nut. I wonder if that leg wasn't greased correctly when it was manufactured? I see you added extra grease to the top gears on the new legs. Could you look inside the housing and see if the worm gear was greased well? I think a zerk fitting would be an excellent addition. Good that you are so handy with the mechanical issues, that would have been a costly repair at a RV repair shop I bet.
Thanks for the video Ray. Question: why do we have different parts numbers for the legs? each leg have locking tabs on both sides so they can be mounted/rotated 180 degrees, I noticed the screw you took apart is a left hand thread, is the other one side right hand thread? I am asking because LG-179014 (Follow Leg) is $25 more than LG-179013 (Driver Leg) why?
@@LoveYourRV Yes the difference in the shafts is obvious, still I don't understand why the driver leg which has the longer shaft is cheaper, I am going to buy 2 driver legs, turn one shaft around and save myself few $$. Have you consider placing a sleeve under the nut to protect the screw from getting sand/dirt ?? like a 3/4 thin wall PVC pipe or similar. Thanks Ray
I'm not sure but on the Stromberg Carlsen website, they are the same price. www.strombergcarlson.com/product/replacement-landing-gear-legs/ No, I don't think a cover would do much with the nut up so high. I don't think sand or dirt caused the failure. My theory is it was a forklift driver in an RV service lot. Soon after I had it in for service, the leg failed. I've since watched some places move trailers around, and they can be pretty rough about it. In a hurry and don't set them down gently. I bet mine got put down too hard or dropped damaging the threads. Anyway, the trailer hasn't been to a shop since, and the legs are still working great. I also take it out every year or two and lube the screw. Here is a video about it www.loveyourrv.com/fifth-wheel-power-landing-jack-leg-lubrication/
I have same setup... I'm clicking when lifing legs.. I bought all new gears and motor and gear box. Still clicking. Legs are straight.. question is how do you get the thread rod out?? I have feeling grease is old and gunk on the threads. Cannot for life of me figure out how to get it out..
If you're collar nut is OK you'll likely have to turn it a bunch of times to get it out. Mine was stripped so just fell out. But here is how I lube mine now www.loveyourrv.com/fifth-wheel-power-landing-jack-leg-lubrication/ Cheers, Ray
@LoveYourRV hey. So I'm all apart.. you have the nut inside the tube that's crimped to hold that nut in... how do you get that nut out. My worm shaft only unscrews bout 9 inches then gets to tight.. I need to get that nut out to lube the rod..or check to see if to bent
@@Theoregoncoastexplored On mine, the worm gear collar nut was stripped, but there is no way to get it out. That's why I bought a whole new leg. The nut was metal stamped in place. See here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jL12JJ5Fmis.html
Just a thought, I dont know how hard it is to get to the screw, they make spray lithium in a can with a straw. You maybe able to make a hole and spray lube onto the screw. Thanks I never seen that before.
Ed H May be a solution, I'm just not sure if the lithium is heavy enough, it may require a bearing type grease. Will have to do some research on that. Thanks. Ray
Question: one of my landing leg on the driver side (right leg when facing rig) on my 2006 cougar 278efs does not extend or desend up or down manually or electronically with the switch.. Only the left side does.. I had my rig delivered from stelaership and they absolutely knew about the faulty leg.. Now to lift it back on the truck the side that extends goes up putting all the weight on the right side making it look like its bending!!! Could this be my probelm? The motor mechanism that actually spins the Long Bar that rotates both arms up and down sounds like its struggles.. What could be my potential diagnosis?
I would see if you can pull that leg out of the rig and take a look, could be a bad bevel gear. Here is another video I did that may help get a look at the leg operation - www.loveyourrv.com/fifth-wheel-power-landing-jack-leg-lubrication/ I'd make sure the trailer is on the truck before working on it. You wouldn't want to be under there is the other leg failed. Cheers, Ray
i fix and repair every thing i own, but i can not find a jack nut from venture 29,50 inch jack landing gear, called etrailer they told me its a liability to sell just the nut ..... in my opinion was made out of the wrong type of steel . but back to the problem they are willing to sell me the complete landing gear for $208 so you throw away the housing the top gear landing foot all good.... help were can i get the acme thread rod and nut
Well this morning I was going to do some preventative maintenance on my jacks and while raising I also heard a clunk . Ordered as you did with etrailer . Did you grease the worm gear on your new legs before installing? . And yes my trailer will stay hooked up awaiting new legs . At least I’m at home with my trailer in my shop.
I didn't do any lube to the new legs but have done it a few times since. My legs come out pretty easy so that helps. www.loveyourrv.com/fifth-wheel-power-landing-jack-leg-lubrication/ Anyway they are still working well. Cheers, Ray
Ray, Thanks for the video my 245rks is a few years older so know I know what to expect. This video is on its way to my favorites. If I where to drill a hole in the landing legs how far down from the top would you suggest I drill a hole to allow access to drop some oil or grease on the lead screw? Thanks Ron & Liv
Ron Weiss Not too sure, I was going to play around with the old leg I kept to see where the best spot would be to make a hole. I know some landing legs come with them as well. Was going to research where and how they locate their fittings. Will post when I figure it our. Cheers Ray
Love Your RV I would be interested in your findings on where to put this lub point. I have a 276rls as well. I just finished installing the "Shoe Drawer" by the front door like you did on yours. I put a door on mine, but looks good. I really appreciate all the tips! We are getting ready to head to Austin April Fools Day. (I figured it was as good a day as any to leave!)
I couldn't find part numbers so researched online and found legs with the same dimensions - I figured out I needed LG-179013 and LG179014 from the diagram on this page - www.strombergcarlson.com/product/replacement-landing-gear-legs/ Using those numbers I found many places selling the legs. Cheers, Ray - www.loveyourrv.com/repairing-my-broken-fifth-wheel-landing-leg/
Stromberg Carlson Products, Inc. is a third generation company that has served the RV aftermarket for over 54 years. We are located in Traverse City, MI, but our products are available nationwide at RV dealers near you! - www.strombergcarlson.com/ You're right, they likely have it made overseas though...
I don't want to take away from your video... I think you did a fantastic job explaining the fix. I gave you a thumb's up. I look for the USA label, and purchased some "heavy duty" hinges "made on the USA". They may have been assembles on the USA, but the bearings, the most important part, were clearly stamped "CHINA" when I took it apart. Caveat emptor!
Great video! I had mine fail last year but i had a generator in the way..... made a video on how i got around that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hYjGB8IOSFI.html
Hi Ray. I learned that the following leg is binding and blowing the fuse. Lead leg is working fine. Part ordered. Your algorithm is awesome! Thanks, thanks, thanks 👍
