Repair SUPER SIZE Tilt Bracket for 90T Excavator | Line boring & Machining

Is this the biggest tilt bucket bracket you have ever seen!? This is off a 90 tonne Hitachi ZX890 excavator and it is not common to see a tilt bucket on a machine this size. We’ve got a few repairs to do, the main pivot position is worn out and needs line boring. We also need to repair two of the pin spacers and line bore the tilt bucket pin position. To do all of that we need to do some air carbon arc gouging and we complete the assembly of our new Shop Made Line Boring Mounts to use while line boring and bore welding the positions. We also do some welding to repair the pin spacers and have to freeze fit the main position bushings using liquid nitrogen!

Hmmm.🤔🤔🤔🤔 I gonna go with a couple things....1st,I was,as always on the edge of my chair when Kurtis starts pouring liquid nitrogen,when he attempts the first go at the big ol' bushing and it catches (krikey) pucker factor of 11, and not once but twice then it goes home😳😁 2nd.thing is when getting your parts back from nitriding, and the fact that Kurtis has used the factory ones for years,knowing to that having made these his self the tools manufactured in house will outperform the bought tooling. Sense of pride touch the heart. maybe a side hustle is in order on a few thing huh??? I can see it now" SafetyDawg shop tooling guaranteed to outrun and outlast the competition"! My brother and I used to own a dirt moving company with excavators, dump trucks, dozers, roller compactor, etc. Kurtis shows me machines I never knew existed, so it’s fascinating to learn about these machines, how they work, and better yet how to repair them. I find the size of these machine tools awe inspiring compared to what I worked with at one time as an instrument maker. Kurtis’s depth of knowledge and engineering skills, coupled with Karen as a great videographer, Wonder Dog, and the Butcher make a great team. Made my Friday as I sit here in the rain on Negros Oriental (PH).

He is very good doing many things. I worked in aviation at Bell and LTV as top pay working on very difficult parts. I also had my own production job shop for 18 years. I ran DeVlegs and Jig borers. I also ran 100 hp Cincinnati vertical and horizontal mills. He has taught me a lot about big lathe work.

I work in IT, so this is as far away from what I do for a living as possible, but the attention to detail and standard of work involved in this was obvious, even to me. Shop made tools are always a favorite. Line boring is another favorite. And, of course, your videos never disappoint. As for the tilt unit, I've not seen anything like it. I was a dozer operator, mainly D6 and D7. Homie and his toys are so fun, and my cat loves Homeless.

@@heardashot Well, let me give you a perfect example that I know of personally. Ken C - who has retired from business (and actually Ken and Val live just over our back fence), and he still has his own small workshop in our local industrial estate. Ken told me, not so many years ago how he made his little fortune. He had to quote for all of the contracts that he wanted of course. So he would get the plans for the work and diligently work through the lot. If he found that the plans were correct and workable, he would quote with a chance of not getting the job. But, if he found that the plans were not correct (as they were often enough over the years), he would quote low to get the job, knowing that he would get the redo work at his full hourly rate - with no questions asked, and he always took full advantage of that. Ken's only qualification is a welder, and he loves engineers.

I just love this channel, just two people that get the work done and done well. First, Kurtis...the new mounts for the WS2 looked to be up to the task of larger boring, I mean things were just so smooth. And now to Karen...you know what, you are so good at shooting and editing, I know this because I dove into the back videos here on this channel that go back a couple of years and the quality has shot up by leaps and bounds. I had to hold my breath when you fitted those bushes. Glad it all went well. That is one hell of a power head. The advances in machinery since WW2 have been astounding. When we were kids in the fifties they were still loading trucks with cable winch dozers. I hope you tube were not to harsh on you. Those constant improvement efforts to ensure the customer gets the best possible outcome really add value to your shop. I’ve watched enough line boring in the field to appreciate how keeping tolerances to spec will get the longest possible time in the field before repairs are necessary again. Seems crazy to use a tilt bucket on a machine that big, but I guess they have their reasons. The shop-made mounts came out great, and the video speed for the welding on the second half of the main pivot bore (20:48 to 21:04) was spot on!

Another great video, and what I like so much is that the work is clearly shown. Operations that are repeated several times show you first in detail, then faster and the rest in steps. This really is the perfect RU-vid channel. The fact he shows a clip of the machine the part comes from is much appreciated. The editing and filming is filming is fantastic and I can’t express how much I enjoy watching someone who takes the time to do everything the right way. I wanted to work for somebody in welding and heavy machine repair who does it right like you but the places I tried wanted to cut corners for production. So I gave up and work construction. Shops I have worked in we used freezer box with CO2. Changed dump box bearing ultra class, heated eye with snap ring oneside (bearing slides through and locks). Another line boring box dump hinge ulta class, two bars 12 feet. Ultra class over 300 tonne. Great machineshop and outstanding work done.

Those shop made tools look better than the OEM part, and yes that nitriding came out great, lovely surface and no imperfections at all, and a perfect fit on the threads as well. Going to bet the most expensive part was those 4 bearings per side. Close tolerance bearings are expensive, as I have had to order some for machinery, but seeing as the originals lasted 40 years, with no grease applied to them for a long time, due to burst and clogged grease lines, and they only got replaced because one was scored, but still had no measurable play. Those will still be there when your grandchildren are running the shop.

Those line boring supports came out really well. I liked seeing you put the smaller ones into use in tandem. They did not become obsolete. Karen is one of the most efficient and fastest heavy duty mechanics around. She just breezes through the work. 😋

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your work. I’ve worked with some talented machinists in my day. I was an industrial/commercial HVAC/R engineer. I have seen many types of machining fabrications. Really enjoying this channel! I work in IT but have done little bits of welding and fabrication as a hobby, mostly car body repair and a couple of tables and welding carts. Fascinating to see you guys approach problems that in some cases seem insurmountable... And nice to see things being fixed instead of replaced (i suspect a lot more common at this sort of scale/cost). Just subscribed. Cheers!

Love your abilities to fab and repair . Meticulous and thorough ... your work is notable and exemplary Kurtis and Karen . Friday's episode of Gold Rush had Tony Beets and crew put a shorter boom on a 700 series Volvo excavator because that thing couldn't dig up pay that still had permafrost in it . Even though they have D11's ripping it . Just as you said, the shorter boom will generate a lot more breakout, and they were able to easily get full buckets and move material faster .

It's really cool seeing you use all the tools and attachments you've made in previous videos all together now. Just watching the ease of use and how little time it takes to do the same jobs is awesome. Looks like the new toy has lasted more than a day. Very well made. It is just so satisfying when someone uses equipment for things they were not intended for. Often that will allow you to do things easier and cheaper than your competitors and /or just make it possible. I used a hydraulik rotator hook on my knuckleboom crane which was not common on big cranes back then but convinced my boss to buy one in big size anyway. A lot seemed to like my idea because they became more common. When you are a one man band you need to be creative.

Kurtis, I admire the quality and thought that you even put into your shop built tooling. Most people will just build what will just do the job but you go the extra mile even with shop equipment knowing that quality is also put into the customers work .
