Repairing a very bent control arm after hitting a curb

Sometimes curbs jump right out in front of you and show no mercy to your car. Here is the process of fixing the damages on a friend’s car.
This was filmed toward the end of summer 2023 after the culvert install on my driveway video hence the crazy poison ivy on my arms.

nice job Sam! FYI when changing lower control arms the 2 bolts attached to the car frame should be only snug until you put the cars weight (ride height) then tighten up them 2 bolts

I took two years of auto mechanics in high school 60+ years ago. In the 60+ years of owning cars, and even today, that knowledge saved me many thousands of $$$ by avoiding unnecessary repairs and doing repairs myself including an engine rebuild, clutch replacement, brake jobs, differential repair and automatic transmission replaement (don't have the knowledgfe to repair those).

Excellent repair Sam. One thing I do when replacing tie rod ends is to count the number of turns it takes to separate the inner from the outer. If you do that you can install the new tie rod end the same number of turns and be somewhere in the ball park to send it for an alignment. Heat can be your best friend when trying to remove something that has had Locktite used on it. Just make sure you are not going to damage any seals.
@ky.gambler5281

Why did she replace the inner ends, I would think they were ok? Right on other points.
@LightningFabrication
@LightningFabrication 25 дней назад
@@ky.gambler5281 Sam was told by the alignment shop they were bad. I couldn't tell if they were bad by watching the video but lots of times, shops will try to up sell items that are good hoping the customer won't question them. It's a dishonest way to make more money. Many times the good parts will be left on the vehicle, just cleaned up and the new parts will be thrown in the trash. I'm not saying this was the case but Sam did mention the alignment shop said they were bad.
@samanthaweber6932

I used heat but it still sucked, looks like someone may have put locktite on the inner/outer connection even though it isn’t supposed to get any and or it was just that rusty which is hard to believe because that car had several alignments in the last few years that I was aware of. I trust this mechanic they said to replace them so I did. They didn’t profit of of them getting replaced since they only did the alignment. Which they only charged me for one when they had technically done it “twice” since they found out the adjustment couldn’t be made the first time. Hope this helps

Sam I take the whole inter and outer tie rods out in one piece because you have to measure the right side ( old tie rods to match the new tie rods) If not it will be way out of alignment ( drive horrible)And if its way out it can destroy whats left of your tires.And you should buy the rubber boots as you replace the right and left sides.The boots keep the dirt from getting on the inter tie rod and wear the iter tie rods out .I usually count the threads on the new inter and outer tie rods. Once you count and put the new tie rods in the right places then run the jam nut to keep the inter and outer tie rods from moving.

Its done now though and I doubt Sam would have put the old rubber boots back if they where damaged too badly.

Sam never tighten the lug nuts with an impact, it can ruin your rotor by warping it, always a torque wrench when mounting the tires, I was a mechanic for 40+ years, Sam, when you are changing Tie Rod, ends take a measurement of the threads you see, it will make it close when you put it back with the new parts P.S. That tool is a plumbers wrench Sam a trick to get you front end lined up jack up the car make a chalk line in the center of the tires, in the front, measure the distance between the lines, spin the marks to the rear and measure it, then turn the adjusting nut on the tie rod to get the same measurement the same. it will still need to be aligned

Next time count the turns as you back the outer tie rod end off and match that to the new one and it will be very close for the drive to the alignment shop. Also throw the pickle fork away and hit the outside of where the tapered tie rod is with a big hammer hard and the taper will fall out and not have damaged the rubber boot.

Hate to say it, but the pivot bolt that holds the control arm to the chassis should be tightened with the car's weight on the suspensions. That locks the rubber bushing in place in the control arms "normal" position, and movement up and down creates deflection in the bushing. You tightened with the arm in teh full down position, so now it's always being deflected. Thankfully it's a pretty easy fix. Just loosen it up, lower the car into its normal position, then retighten.

Well done. Next time when changing the tie rods, leave the ball joint connected to the wheel hub until you have the locknut loose. That way the whole rod isn't flapping around and you only need one spanner to crack the nut loose. Once the nut is loose, knock out the ball joint and you can just use the two flats on the rods to put spanners on to unscrew them. Only the thread to the rack should ever have thread lock, not the joint of the two rods, thats the adjuster threat, only the nut locks it.
