Join me on my journey in repairing an old cedar strip canoe! After being severely vandalized with a hammer, I just could not see this beautiful canoe go by the wayside. Gifted by a friend, repaired by me. I hope to have many more adventures with this great boat! Safe travels my friends. Keep on camping and remember... there is always a squirrel.

that's a beauty boat! 17', its looks huge. super cool. nice wood working! very pretty!!!

It was in pretty bad shape when I received it. I think most folks would have just junked it. It feels good to give old things new life. She's not the prettiest boat on the water, but she's mine. Best wishes my friend. Thanks for watching.

Thank you very much and thanks for watching. There is just something about a wooden boat. They seem to have their own soul.

Nice ! I like how you ran a router around the grip holes, tell me those were not just drywall screws ! Lol !

Big help to me with 3 strip canoes, wish I had your skill and tools! Why not move the thwart or seat so you can paddle closer to the center?

It's a huge boat. 18'-6" 36" at center. It's mostly used for family trips. Wife kids and dogs. I actually have a third seat that is removable. I do plan to build a single man pack boat in the near future. Thanks so much for watching my friend!

Great work on a beautiful boat! Did you make your kayak paddle or buy it? I have been thinking about making one and would appreciate any pointers.

The one in this video is store bought. It's from Voyager. As far as tips for kayak paddles, purchase or build the longest one you can. Short paddles require a steeper angle to enter the water. Great for fast water and wet hands. Longer paddles allow for shallower angles and dry hands. For bigger canoes like this one, I actually prefer a standard canoe paddle. I am certainly no expert. Just my opinion. My best advice would be to try as many as you can from friends or your local paddling store. Ultimately it's personal preference. Thanks so much for watching and best wishes my friend.

I have a 12 foot crack in my 1989 16 foot cedar strip. Should I repair by belt sanding and then epoxy a new sheet of fiberglass cloth over the bottom hull?

I would sand only enough to expose the crack. Proceed with filling it with waterproof wood glue as I did in the video. Lightly sand and over the crack, wood dust from sanding will adhere to the glue, virtually making the crack disappear and watertight. Then yes, fiberglass over that. Great question and good luck!

what kind of wood did you use for the top lip of your canoe?

Maple and Walnut. I mean, I am from Vermont so those two just go together. 😉😁 Thanks so much for watching my friend.

Adequate, rather than impressive.
