I wasn't paying over $130 to buy new cables just because my current ones weren't built to what i would call a quality standard. So to save money and waste i am going to fix my current ones.

Not any more than any other tech company nowadays is. iPhones last significantly longer than most Android phones. There are people that still use iPhone 4s and 5s for a reason. And I'm saying this as someone who had only had Samsung phones for years. They're also much easier to repair.

The Story behind those Cables: In 2009 Greenpeace did a lot of lobbying against Apple. They have criticized the fact that the cables are made with PVC-containing plastic. After some pressure, Apple bowed to this. Since then, Apple has advertised that the devices are made without toxic plastics and PVC. Around 2009, Apple also changed the plastic of its cables. Of course, Apple is now benefiting from this. Keyword: Planned obscolescence and greenwashing.

I've been doing the heatshrink trick on these cables for quite some time, but one thing you can do to make them more rigid and keep the heatshrink in place is to fill the heatshrink with some hot glue before shrinking it. Then when it's shrinking from the heat, the glue will remelt and fill all the nooks and crannies and stiffen up. I've had some cables repaired in this method last for years more.

A much appreciated video, I'd like to recommend looking into the different types of heat shrink. You may have single wall heat shrink tubing which is usually 2:1, however the next step up is double wall adhesive lined heat shrink which is usually 3:1 allowing you to go with a slightly larger diameter to slip over your cable ends. The adhesive lined is often used in automotive and marine applications where oxidation and abrasion is more a concern because of the harsher environment. I hope this doesn't come off as condescending, I really appreciate your videos and the British vehicle you are restoring on the other channel, Cheers

2:10 Ah, some things never change. I remember buying an iPod Video around 2006 and commenting that the thumb wheel on those things was a bit too sensitive and that it would be great if Apple added a sensitivity adjustment to the Settings. The employee scoffed and told me I was using it wrong - I should be using the thumb wheel with my index finger! Funny enough, even back in '06 their cables weren't so great either. I think my iPod's charge cable has held up alright (wherever it's hiding now), but the shielding on the earphones gave out within a year.

At least rumour has it Apple will be switching to braided cables for the upcoming iPhones. That will solve this issue. Personally I haven’t had too bad of luck with their cables, my family has broken some though, one I suspect was being in the heat/cold too much because it is always in our car so it gets the heat of summer and cold of winter. Also dropping a device off the couch while connected and bending the cable by pushing it against the couch has made them break quicker. I do also have an Anker lightning cable and it’s really nice.

What are y'all doing to your iPhone cables? I don't treat mine particularly well, and have been using the same ones for many years, and mine haven't shown anything more than a little bit of crumpling rubber near the connector. No tears. Are you slamming the bottom of your iPhon against a table while it's charging?
@Lol5967
@Lol5967 2 года назад
Since 2020, Apple decided to put harder rubber on the 1M cables as well. Since then, every Apple cable that has entered my house still work and still show very minor sign of usage. The longest surviving cable I witnessed was around 7 years, it was often repaired by tape and came with one of the first iPads to come with a lightning port and stopped working in August 2020. Good to see Apple change.

The first and last thing I bought from Apple is my iPod Classic. It was 2007 and both the iPod and its original cable are alive and working - no discoloration, no hardening of the cable and no connection issues. The battery on the device itself is also the original one. Doesn't last more than 4-5 hours nowadays but it shows that Apple used to build hardware really well.

How things changed. I used to train Apple Store Geniuses, and we’d always strive to make the customer happy. Those cables cost pennies on the dollar and would be swapped without a thought. When Cook took over... well, let’s just say I don’t go to the Apple Store for any of my repairs or parts anymore. (Quit in 2016, but keep in touch with friends and etc.)

I use braided, aftermarket lightning cables. The one in my car is approaching 5 years old. It has seen two car ownerships so far, being used 7 days per week more often than not. It cost me £9 from Halfords and the day it breaks is going to be very sad indeed... if that ever happens, of course.

I mean what they told you wasn’t wrong. I still use the same lightning cable I got with my iPhone 5s when it was new and I have no tearing and no damage. There’s some discoloration due to the 8 years of use, but people really do abuse these cables. I used to work at an Apple store, and let me tell you some of the cables people brought in with actual damage was astonishing. People got mad when they’d bring in a cable that was a few years old that had been torn to pieces, and you would tell them they could buy a new one. The good ol’ Steve Jobs swap anything to make the customer happy days have been gone for years.

I have tried several times to repair my cables with a shrinking cover, but it will just move the problem a little bit further. In a month of daily use, you will notice a craking at the end of the cover because of the difference in rigidity of the materials combined.

considering i have peripherals, built in the 90's with PS/2 connectors which are still in as new condition, it makes it very clear, companies are purposefully designing these cables to fail over time.

I don’t know what’s the situation that your cables break but I have many cables dating from 2012 in exceptional condition. I don’t bend it or turn it in any odd way. With that being said I know some people that have had troubles you could go for quality aftermarket certified by Apple cables for seven bucks which means it’s not worth repairing the cable yourself. When I’ve had a bad cable Apple always changed it for me no questions asked. But I appreciate the videos you put out there because this will help a lot of people with this unfortunate issue
@thomasmorais3749
@thomasmorais3749 3 года назад
Another way to fix the cable is using teflon tape (white plumbing tape) and normal white school glue. Use the teflon tape and wrap the damaged part of the cable about 3 or 4 times should be good enough and after you use a small dab of white school glue and spread it around the wrapped part of the cable making sure you covered the end of the tape you cut. Let dry for a few seconds and then you got a fixed cable

The thing that grinds my gears the most about Apple removing the lightning chargers from the box isn’t the inconvenience or even the issue of them trying the cut costs. It’s that a) the cables are so awful that they break after mere months of use and b) apple knows that a bunch of their target demo don’t have a plug that will support the new cable in the box.

Hugh, you are using the heat shrink wrong. You’re supposed to make a horizontal cut in the lengthwise middle of the heat shrink to put it on the cable. Hope that helps
