We need to repair a pallet of parts for a 2000HP Caterpillar 3516 Diesel Engine. These are some of the exhaust components from the engine that came out of a CAT 789 Haul Truck. The parts are made from cast iron and over time they have worn out. We show the step by step process to repair the exhaust parts including machining in the lathe, boring in the milling machine and shrink fitting new sleeves using Liquid Nitrogen. We're going to give those sleeves a 0.2mm (8 thou) tight interference fit because we definitely don't want them getting out and into the engine!
In this video we are using:
- Hafco TM-1740G Centre Lathe
- Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe
- Hafco BM-63VE Milling machine

I used to work for Deimler/MTU/Detroit Diesel for 25 years(until 2018). Alot of the large MTU marine engines(and smaller truck engines) had steel rings that you could replace for a better seal. I'm surprise CAT still uses that interference fit like that. Thats what older Detroits used years ago when I was just starting out in the 90s(the engines were from the 70 and 80s)

@Keit Hammleter The first 3500 series engine rolled off the line in 1981. Fundamentally, it hasn't changed much. The fuel system has been the biggest change. They were using steel insert rings on some of those turbo discharge tubes even back in the 60's. Some engines got them, some didn't.

@Patrick Gordon I still work on both series on occasion. The 3500 may be old and simple, but there is a reason that it hasn't hardly changed. Same for the 3400- the C15 is basically a 3406. The C18 is basically a 3456. The C27 is basically a 3412. The C32 is basically analogous to the C18 vs C15, just V12. All 4 still installed in brand new machines, EPG, Pumps, etc. If it weren't for the Aftertreatment hoo-hah, they'd last as long if not longer than the old 3406E.

The sheer amount of wear and tear these parts experience is pretty nuts. The enginuity of the human mind is amazing, but to be able to fix these components is even more incredible. Love the attention to detail and care in the small things. Once again thank you for sharing with us weekly and keep up the good work. I wouldn't be surprised if an engine came in next :

Yes. As he fixes these pieces I can't help but think of them at work routing the exhaust of a 2000hp Diesel engine 16 hours a day, months on end. I imagine the endless heat, stress, and vibration. Yet they handle it because they were made right.

Apart from the great engineering work I really like the camera work and especially the editing. You show enough to see all the steps of your work. And you show enough to show the repetitions. And you cut and speed up enough to make it not repetitive but just right. Great job!

Curtis your one of the hardest working young men I've seen in a long time. A friend of mine was a tech rep. at mytec machine in Charleston s.c would have loved to had you working for him. He taught me what little I was willing to learn being as how I was pretty young at time. As always I enjoy watching you perform your magic as my old teacher and friend would have said! Keep spreading the knowledge brother!

All impressive stuff! An innate ability to engineer things! It’s in you matey! I did 20 years of very varied engineering from miniature, to things weighing a ton or two! I liked the challenge, as you must! It’s a satisfaction to a relative few, who can do! I enjoy your methodology, utilising so many skill sets and equipment knowledge! No empty vessel to be found here people! Well done all round ! Cheers

Congratulations again on 1/2 million! So nice to see some work being done, unlike other channels making a multi-part video for no reason. Watched one recently that took 30 minutes to put a chuck in evaporust… Keep up the fantastic work Kurtis and Karen. All the best from the UK

Gday, congratulations on 500k, how awesome is that, this was a really interesting job, I’ve had manifold sections on Detroits over the years that were completely rooted and leaked more out the joins then the stack, this would have been a perfect fix, we couldn’t get new ones at the time, awesome video as always mate, have a great weekend, cheers

Another great video. I have fitted many of these exhaust parts and the dunny bowl (collector) to trumpet (joiner tube) is a slip fit when brand new. It’s good to have this sort of fit for alignment reasons when changing out turbos and other engine work.
