Repairing Quartz Watch Coil by Le Arsi

See how I repair broken coil of a quartz watch. This is very effective especially if you repaired a quartz watch that came back as "back job" after an hour, a day or a week only to discover that the coil is open or defective. A quick remedy and alternative that can save time, money and reputation while waiting for your ordered new spare parts to arrive. A reliable fix to vintage watches in which spare parts are not available already. The sound reproduced from the tester is very effective as "third hand" while my eyes are focusing with my microscope and my hands holding the probes.

I was able to repair a broken coil with solder as you described, but I only used regular voltage meter. I measured resistances until I found the defective end. Thanks, without this video I probably wouldn't had try this at all. :)

I like the tester. But the coil is wax coated. The solder can easily drop off unless you use some epoxy to secure it. I have done this before when the coil I wanted to replace has been obsolete.

This allowed me to fix my clock! The coil contacts just weren't reaching the battery! Thank you for sharing this video

Too bad you didn't have sound on the video and a camera connected to your microscope, that would have been great. Thank you.

Yes you are right, I used nail polish to secure the soldered coil and remember I also use my 40x microscope to accurately accomplish this. You do not just hit the coil winding soldering many strands because if you do so the movement will draw excessive current from the battery. After soldering this tester will tell you whether the movement becomes high in current consumption or has retained its normal condition. Please visit my blogsite stated at the end of this video, thanks.

Nice tester, congrats! When you test the coil with the probes I would expect not to get any signal as the wire is insulated. Do you deliberately apply the probes with some more pressure so that you go through the insulation? Risky for the future wouldn't you agree especially if somebody would need to use silver epoxy in further repairs?

I don't understand at min1:00 how can you mesure continuity over the coil surface if that should be isolated with varnish.

Hello Igor, have you noticed two different tones. Higher pitch is for the low resistance of coil wire and lower tone is for the low resistance of coil. My tester reacts differently for top and bottom windings. Same in checking quartz circuits...tone is higher if the watch has high power consumption! The lower the tone the better for watch consumption tests.

@@learsi0807 I think he meant the varnish with which the wire is insulated. You scratch the wire from the top to hear the contact. This is weird because the wire gets damaged. But if the coil works at the end, that's great!
