Hopefully for that long. At least these early machines used common chips. The custom chips of later machines are a nuisance. But FPGA is the way forward on that front.

I called 10nF ten nufters too.

Almost all of them operate on just 5v, they often have 12v for the audio like you mentioned though.... but if you lose the 12v line, they'll still boot on just the 5v. There were some that needed -5 for some of the ram, and the Williams games needed 5, -5, and 12.

You know you have to remove them to test them, right?

@@LyonsArcade Yup, but if you're going to remove them anyway, it can save time and effort by putting it in the tester. It's not meant to be a solution to troubleshooting the board, it is meant as a way to verify that the part was bad -- especially if you don't have a spare part for it and need to figure out if you need to order one. For instance there are situations where another part on the board is creating marginal logic levels, but one part has tolerances able to handle it but other part doesn't. So you replace the part and it seems to work, but then later the system goes bad because it was marginal to begin with. The tester can help you determine that the original part was good and the problem was elsewhere. It's also great for verifying your spare parts bin.

I had one, used it, didn't like it, sold it. Come on MrMaxeemum, use a solder sucker, it's a life changing experience (especially a good one). The best desoldering station is only 60% of a good solder sucker. You won't regret it.

I've always used solder suckers. Finally bought a desoldering station. Solder suckers work better.

The inside is 2mm, I ordered a whole bunch of high heat silicone tubing to replace the tips with.

There's a couple suspects, I'd try the 566 right at the last stage of the saucer sound, and if that didn't do it i'd try the 555 timer in that same area. Good luck!

I believed that nonsense for awhile too, if you think about it power takes the shorted possible path to ground. So if you short it with a screwdriver like normal, it can't possibly damage the high voltage diode, because the voltage is traveling straight to ground through the wire on your screwdriver. Saying that it will damage the High Voltage diode, when the diode when in use regularly holds back the 20,000 volts the entire time it's turned on just isn't logical in my opinion. It's like saying if you drain a swimming pool too fast the walls will collapse. Just nonsense people say that have never actually seen it in use in real life. I short them ground just like normal, but the truth is usually they've bled off the voltage on their own. I've never had it damage a high voltage diode, and I can tell you 100% when Joe did this one he didn't even discharge it, he never does. Usually they bleed off themselves or if they zap you a little bit it's like a good strong cup of coffee :)

Unless you’re removing the anode cap, there is no need to discharge anything…

They weren't ever chrome. They were originally a really shiny black, that looks almost plastic. Mine are in great condition, just checked for you..

@@themightyimp08 I was asking in a generic sense. Many cocktails had chromed legs.

In the UK as a kid you'd see them occasionally in pubs. I guess people wanted to sit down and have a beer. Can't recall seeing them outside of pubs or cafes.

They were never popular in arcades but you'd normally see them in bars, coffee shops, pizza joints, etc. where they doubled as tables.
