Saxophone repairman Matt Stohrer of www.StohrerMus... gushes over a original gold plated Martin Magna in this edition of Repairman’s Overview.
Also it has a weird addendum because in hindsight I am not totally certain on the solid nickel silver key barrels.
Original Martin Committee III aka “The Martin” overview (one of my oldest, hopefully I am not contradicting myself too much in this one): • Repairman's Overview: ...

Glad your left wrist has turned out so well! Your range of motion looks impressive. What an amazing saxophone, as always thanks so much for posting this, very informative

Beautiful! This one inspires me to have one of my The Martin Tenors 1959 gold plated and the engraving enlarged.

Wow! That horn looks awesome! Very important that you pointed out the pad thickness and the drastic changes that will make with bending keys, intonation, key height etc. Interesting that the intonation was better than most other horns of it's time. Not sure abouts the horn weight but that might have something to do with the way the horn resonates and the fantastic tone quality they have. Thanks for the video. Excellent!😊

I have a Committee III or The Martin tenor. And my only regret is not being able to come across something like this example here. What a beautiful example. I also prefer the handcraft models for the soldered tone holes. Both my alto and soprano are handcraft model and they are just a pleasure to play.

Hi, Matt! I love all of your videos and I've been a fan for a long time but this may be the first time I've ever commented. First let me say I did notice your scar and I was concerned but would obviously never ask because I'm a decent human being. Thank you for sharing that personal information. I'm glad to hear the surgery went well and you're on the road to recovery. The saxophone world needs [both of] your skilled hands. I am not a repair technician but I am a performer and teacher. I am also a collector and historian of sorts so it's always a treat to learn about gems like this Magna. I once borrowed a Martin soprano which I actually quite enjoyed paying. I know lots of modern players aren't interested in the less-than-ergonomic key work and the intonation challenges that come along with vintage horns but I normally play on a '28 True Tone alto and a '39 tenor that's marked Ludwig (possibly a Windsor stencil of a Buescher and quite similar in design to my TT.) I have my eyes on a '21 True Tone C Melody that would nestle nicely between them but I am still debating whether or not that's a remotely logical purchase. I digress. Sorry for the long comment. Just know that I respect your passion and intellect and I look forward to viewing many more of your informative videos.

That scar is GNARLY! When you open and close your hand it looks like there's a baby xenomorph in your wrist! Glad that turned out as well as it did. However. Now I suddenly really want to buy a Magna and I'm not sure whether to be happy for this spiritual awakening, or upset that buying a TH&C (my last #1 saxophone crush) will have to wait.

Got my Magna tenor 30 years ago. Best tenor I’ve ever played. Thanks for a great video.

So it’s a mixed blessing that your wrist got smashed. You had a lot of pain and potential long term problems, but we get to see more of you. Thanks for this video. I enjoy your work so much.

Thanks for this video. I play a The Martin from '54 and someone has modified the low Bb mechanics to mimic the magna. This make the whole mechanism a ton better! Didn't know I actually got a Magna feature hacked onto my horn :D

Terrific video, Matt, and wow, what a lovely horn! I would love to play one like this one day. Good news on your wrist!

Several people have noted that the neck on the Magna is different from the standard Committee. Different taper and the Magna neck is longer. Also, there are plenty of examples across the pro models where Martin didn't use nickel-silver on every key arm and barrel. Maybe they made considerations for adjustability or key mass.

Can you provide sources for this? I would love to correct it if I'm giving out bad information, but that is not my understanding.

Stunning instrument, thanks for the walk through. I have a Martin Centennial very much the same as this..what sort of opening in mm or inches should there be between the tone hole and pad on the the upper and lower stack ?

All the late bloomers/weekend warriors on SOTW should enjoy this one. This seems to be their horn of choice (Committee) since they're still affordable and have a great vintage sound.

You stil need to go easy on that wrist. It's good to see you return but recovery is the priority.
