Replace or repair a Galvanized pipe to PEX because of a leaking and rotten piercing saddle valve. I will post in another video why you should not use a self piercing saddle valve to run your water line to the fridge or ice maker.
Just as a reference if you do not know the size of the pipe you have you can measure the Outside Diameter (OD) and the Inside Diameter (ID), mine measured about 0.85" on the outside and all the 1/2" couplings worked great.
Galvanized SCH 40 Pipe 1/8in - OD: 0.405 in - ID: 0.269 in
Galvanized SCH 40 Pipe 1/4in - OD: 0.540 in - ID: 0.364 in
Galvanized SCH 40 Pipe 3/8in - OD: 0.675 in - ID: 0.493 in
Galvanized SCH 40 Pipe 1/2in - OD: 0.840 in - ID: 0.622 in
Galvanized SCH 40 Pipe 3/4 in - OD: 1.050 in - ID: 0.824 in
Galvanized SCH 40 Pipe 1 in - OD: 1.315 in - ID: 1.049 in
I am not an plumber and this video is for entertainment only. This is not a How-To or DIY (Do It Yourself) video, this is how I did it. Should not be attempted by untrained personnel, water and fire hazards are a big risks if you do things incorrectly, only you are responsible for your actions, proceed under your own risk.
Thanks for watching and reading

Overall a good video. Only thing I disagree with is putting Teflon tape on the compression fitting of the stop valve where the compression nut goes. The brass fitting that is compressed around the tubing when you tighten down the nut on the valve is what makes a tight seal. If tightened correctly no leakage can occur. As a side note many people mistakenly think that Teflon tape or the paste are to seal the threads. The tape or paste actually acts as a lubricant, it is the pipe threads that make the seal when tightened down all the way. Threaded pipe ends and fittings are cut are tapered so the tighter you turn the union of pipe and fitting the tighter the seal. The ends on a garden hose for example are not tapered and that is why you need a hose washer to make the seal.

Superb video on teeing into galvanized pipes with a PEX clamp to run water to the fridge. Great job.

Nice video. I got lucky then... bought the house in 2001 and it has a piercing water tapping for the fridge... it's 2021 now, and 20 years, it is still good. Never had a leak. And we all know that in theory, teflon on compression fitting is not required but I know the feeling: we simply cannot resist when we see metal threads... we must do it !!! :-)

Thanks so much for the video. Going to be doing this fix this weekend in the basement and you really highlighted how easy working with pex can be. Eventually will be replacing all the galvanized pipes in the house as our water pressure is low upstairs.

Great video. I know, by how slowly the water is running in my kitchen sink, that I need to do this to my water lines. In a month I have 10 days off so this will be my project. My house was built in the 50's and is galvanized pipe everywhere. Last week I had a pinhole leak in the line that runs from the main valve to the kitchen sink that I fixed with a temporary clamp. It's not going to be a fun or cheap project but it needs doing. Thanks for the tutorial.

Ross, I have this same issue happen every few years in my own personal home and many of the rent houses I manage. You likely have some bits of rust that have built up somewhere and gotten trapped. Luckily it tends to be a relatively easy fix. Before you decide to repair or replace your plumbing you can try flushing out the rust. Start from your Aerator and work backwords. 99% of the time if you remove either (one at a time) your hot / cold water hoses from the connection under the sink (the connection should have an on / off valve) and run the water into a bucket and then turn on the faucet (which will run water out of your open line flushing out any rust) this will solve your problem.

Great video. Will be doing the same but with Pex A. Any thoughts on how to do complete transition from Galv to Pex over a period of time (month or two say) without interruptions? It is a small 3/2 house. Thanks for posting!

Be careful, folks. PEX is not rated for exterior use or for direct sunlight.

I built an outdoor shower 2 years ago and used left over pex from my bathroom remodel and it's fine.

It does not have protection against U.V and other lighting. Even indoor lighting can break the Pex down. I don't know how fast but I have a friend, and like you has this run to his boat dock. It was there for a few years. Ask me in ten years if it is still problem free. lol

COMPRESSION FITTING'S THEY DON'T NEED TEFLON YOU CAN USE IT , BUT NO NEED TO JUST PUT A LITTLE PIPE DOPE TEFLON PREVENTS A LEAK AND PIPE DOPE IT'S TO VOID ANY FRICTION AND ALSO TO SEAL !!!

Myth: WD-40® Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant. Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40® stands for Water Displacement, WD-40® Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product’s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal......www.wd40.com/myths-legends-fun-facts/
