Thank you for posting this detailed video! I recently used your helpful advice to replace the e-brake cables on a 2000 VW Beetle. One of the cables got stretched over the years, which unbalanced the strap, causing it to pop off. I replaced both brake cables to ensure they were the exact same length and provided even tension. The old cables were very corroded and difficult to remove from the guide pipes. Giving them a twist with a pair of pliers did the trick, but a piece of the plastic sheathing got stuck in the guide pipe. I was able to remove the stubborn sheathing using a drill bit the same diameter as the pipe. Also, the replacement cables did not have the same barrel stay as the originals. This the metal barrel that inserts into brake caliper near the hub was a little different, and the spring clip did not seem to fit? I found out, after some trial & error, that you need to insert the clip so that it grabs both sides of the barrel. This allows the caliper to squeeze when the e-brake lever is pulled tight. After three hour of grappling with old brittle plastic in the interior, and messy corroded fasteners underneath the car, my job was finished. Total cost $24, plus some bandages to heal my scraped knuckles. Thank you for posting this great tutorial! 😀🛠

Thank you Corey et al for this excellent tutorial. I had my e-brake cables replaced 20K ago, so when I lifted up the handle and felt no resistance I couldn't believe they were broken. Turns out the cables stretched to the extend they came loose at that u-shaped linkage. All I had to do was reinsert them and tighten the nut. I should have realized that cables do lengthen w/ usage and preventive maintenance should include taking up a few turns on the 11mm nut at about the 15k mark.

Very helpful. My EBrake suddenly went slack. I figured I'd be in for a new set. Gonna open it up today. Hopefully they just popped off, like you said. Fingers crossed!

Hi Corey, Great video did want to know where there any signs that the ebrake cable needed replacing? Like any warning lights on the dash? Your videos are really helpful please keep them coming.
@idparts
@idparts 10 лет назад
Stephen, If your parking brake cable won't release or won't engage it probably needs replacing. There's a warning light on the dash on the dash if it fails, but if the brake's not working properly and there's no light you should still check to see if it's in working order.

Don't wait too long to adjust when it gets loose. I had the ends fall out of that double-cup thing today. Looks like an easy fix from this video but I think I may replace them anyway. The horrible thing is it's cold now and all that old plastic gets really brittle.

Hi🙋🏽‍♀️! How do you know that your handbrake needs to be changed? The ABS light came on outta nowhere. The breaks feel great...when I got her back in 2012, she had approximately 180K miles on her & it took 6 years to finally reach 200K. I don't drive her that often. I suspect that another original part is possibly failing. If this is the problem, I'll take Blueberry🚙 aka The Beetle to the shop (not VW) & have them install the cable for me. The only other light that's on is the airbag. It's a great day when that's the only light that's on.🥳 Also, great video!😊 01 VW Beetle 2.0 GLS with 200,000 miles & counting!🥳🥳🥳

Can you make a video showing how to get the tension on the e-brake at the right equilibrium?
@idparts
@idparts 10 лет назад
It's basically a feel thing. Adjust the tightness of the nut on the U-shaped bracket to adjust the tension. If you want it tighter, tighten the nut more. If you'd like it a bit looser, loosen the nut.

I've got the cables in but they're not even as they are in this video. The driver side is about 1" more sticking through than the one on the passenger side. While the lever doesn't seem to be pulled on that side, even with the cable off it seems to drag a bit. Really at a loss with this as I've went through this entire break system and replaced everything from master cylinder back over the last year. Original issue was locked up back brakes and none of that has fixed it. Just putting these cables in because I'd already bought them

i have a 99 beetle. i bought a new cable but it is about an inch and a half too long and not usuable at all. i compared it to the other cable and its matched up in the way its installed. i looked online and the length matches as well. what can i be doing wrong?

I have the same problem, did you fix it and what was wrong
@hiyall15
@hiyall15 8 лет назад
yeah, the brakes they sell at auto stores are rubbish! you need to get a used one from a beetle from a junk yard because there is a plastic piece that keeps the cable nice and tight while it bends (the entire cable should be encased in plastic almost). the cable from auto stores dont have this. it just half plastic then half wire and it bends and doesnt fit right. what these are made for are cars with metal tubes that you slide the cable through as shown in the video. the beetle doesnt have this so auto part stores dont have the proper cables for this kind of beetle

+hi yall when you sat brak do you Mean All the caliper? and tank you so much for the help☺
@hiyall15
@hiyall15 8 лет назад
i dont know what you're trying to say but you'll just need a cable off a beetle that looks just like the olds ones you had. only wire that should be showing is for the handbrake and caliper and anything inbetween needs all plastic up and down. its what keeps the cable from flopping around

I think he feigned that he couldn't find his 10mm racheting wrench so he could make it appear easier like "It's only be a five minute job anyway." When in reality it took him forty minutes.
