Great vids mate! Watch your whole KZTE series at one sitting. Cheers from Argentina! Just building courage to replace my cracked head by myself. Great inspiration!

Hey great videos! Did you get oil pressure up first before starting? I’ve been told to remove rocker cover , glow plugs and fuel solenoid before first start

Thanks. I didn't do that myself. It wouldn't hurt to put a small amount of oil in each piston to add some lubricant to the walls when the pistons move for the first time, but that would be about it. The oil pressure drops to zero after a few days of not driving normally, and that's never an issue, so I don't see a problem with just letting the car do its thing.

Excellent series. Thank you for the work you put into making these videos. Did you buy the AMC head or a chinese one? And at what mileage did your one crack?

Thanks for the feedback. I had a mechanic friend round up the head for me. It was an aftermarket head (not an OEM Toyota) that was an upgrade on the original design to fix the cracking issue the originals could have.

Good job! Head is original Toyota or analog?

Aftermarket head. They have apparently got modifications that protect against the cracking issue that can happen with the Toyota heads.

Hey mate awesome videos. Going to attempt now following your steps. Roughly how long did it take you? Probably be more of a weekend thing for mw

No worries mate, glad you find it useful. All the best with changing the head. You could do it over a weekend, but I'd start early, 7ish, and work into the night, 9ish, to make sure.

Hi great videos series with great details. Trying to get inspiration to get mine done as well. Have your been going well since the replacement?

Thanks mate. The car's going well. I actually sold it ( to my regret) a while ago. I've been in contact with the guy (about 10 months after selling it) who rang me to ask if I'd put new glow plugs in the engine. He told me he's loving it, been lots of places with it and it hasn't missed a beat. Made me even more sad to have sold it. All the best if you decide to give it a go.

@@aussieknowhow thanks for the reply. Mine is puffing white smoke first start in the morning and idle rough for a few seconds, then clear. But I am loosing coolant slowly. Can’t find any physical leak, if I pressure test the car cold the white smoke appears again. I have the exact same engine as yours. It has been a few months since this happened hopefully the block is ok. But I only used this car as my third car for local and haven’t done any long journey. Seeing your cylinder rusted and stop ok after clean up gives me confidence? Will it be possible to bolt up the exhaust manifold first to the new head then lay the head on the gasket? Did you use dry and wet sand paper?

@@aeroelastic6736 The things you're seeing sound identical to what I was seeing, though I can't explain why it wouldn't have done it for a while. Yes I used a light wet and dry and it cleaned up very easily, though I expect the longer you leave it the more pitted it will get and may become harder. That's just an assumption though. From memory I think there is some overlap from the head and block by the manifold (up the back?), maybe that could affect the torque settings slightly or maybe the alignment. Probably minimally though. That said, it would be worth a try and maybe leave the manifold bolts slightly loose to give some flexibility and tighten them once done. Actually the more I think about it the more I'm wishing I'd thought of that, it was a pain to do in place :)

@@aussieknowhow so you loosing coolant too? Mine is loosing slowly like top up of 200ml every 2 months but the white smoke is getting more so decided to do the head. So yours was a cracked head, not a blown gasket right? I am just about to buy an AMC new head…

What is the purpose of running water only for the first 600 miles?
@aussieknowhow
@aussieknowhow 9 месяцев назад
The coolant has an effect on the gaskets seating properly, so you run straight water first so they seat properly and then use the coolant after that.
