Hey thought next video would be about water source If some thing fell through why not take 5 or 10 min and see how other places around the world drill wells NO NO NO not just soft no rock or like that pvc pipe sand drilling People have been drilling wells up to and over 500 feet with a rope wood pole and a home made drilling bit since at least the thirteen hundreds You Guys take on crazy Giant imposable to most road building both of you can fab things from scratch blessed with awesome tools to do so But you cant make a small balance beam rocker with simple type easy to make winch simple percussion drill bit Then hook the rocker arm to a lawn mover motor then run through pulley on pig poles? My old buddy drilled wells all his life with a percussion drill rig You have to baby set it and it could take a week of 10 hour days if deep and all rock You mostly set in shade drinking beer shooting the shit or falling asleep when you pass short learning curve IT IS JUST PICKING SOMETHING HEAVY WITH HARDENED STEEL POINTS UP AND DROPPING IT TILL YOU SEE IT IN YOUR SLEEP LOL When you hit water good you will have to run a very simple home made bailer down the hole to clean it out and test gallon per min Guys I know this sounds simple because it is lol I would laugh my ass off if you lost the rope or cable down the hole and have to spend half the day fishing it out So if you guy drill it your self with a small home made rig fake your old man goofing off and having to go fishing ! You have subs to entertain LOL I dont know you guys from adam but there is a dad with wisdom and maybe a touch of money and tons of loving his kid in back ground some where You guys are to young to do what you do with out at least wisdom being sheared from some where!!!! Love your videos drill you own well it will entertain and help others WIN WIN WIN!

Hey, love the install!! A small observation: as a father of five, yes five, if you teach Oliver to sleep went quite, he will become a very light sleeper. Whereas, if you just go about your daily lives making normal amounts of noise, he will be a better sleeper all around, especially if you go travelling with him to new environments. Glad to see you doing it yourself. A few suggestions if I may from someone in the industry. 1. Ductboard is great... until it's not. Your indoor unit will develop an inch of static or more. As it's in the hot attic, the tape will delaminate and the ductboard will blow apart. You must inspect it regularly. Make sure you are using the correct foil tape. Regular duct tape won't last a year no matter what it's called. We often use clips on the seams. 2. Install a second zip tie on the flex duct. It's remarkable just how often those ties fail. You are also not using a zip tie gun, so they are not nearly as tight as they otherwise would be. Then take a third tie, roll the outer face over the insulation and lightly zip it down. Makes for a clean installation and critters have a harder time entering it. 3. Those mechanical fittings always leak. Do yourself a favor and buy a refrigerator sniffer and test the fittings to make sure they aren't leaking. You may be able to buy the precharged unit yourself, but you can't buy replacement refrigerant without a license. Check for leaks when changing the filter. 4. During very cold weather, the unit is less efficient at heating. It will struggle. That is normal. It will also not heat the house well and will run constantly. In very cold weather, you need a backup source of heat. As this unit doesn't have backup strip heat, you still need that wood stove. 5. Icing of the outdoor unit in heating mode is normal. Icing of the indoor unit in cooling is not. 6. The lack of a trap on the overflow will allow unfiltered air from the attic into the air handler depending upon how the unit is configured. That little wavy trap you installed has very little static pressure capability. You should install a proper trap. 7. Do yourself a favor and install a water bug alarm in the drip pan.

These inverter driven compressor systems don't struggle to heat at low temperatures. They have 100% heating capability down to -5F and 78% at -22F. I put an 18K BTU 220V MrCool mini split in to replace a 12K BTU 110V window AC. My electric bill is lower than last summer and my home has been much more comfortable. I don;t know yet whether I'll use the gas furnace this winter or the MrCool. What would be nice is a thermostat that can coordinate the heat functions of the heat pump and the furnace.

@@fgambaroAgree. I think if the return plenum was just outside the bathroom with a small, maybe 4”-6”hose going to bathroom ceiling area for a bit of return ventilation & remove a bit of steam etc, might be a bit better, pretty good tho

Don't be quiet with babies!!! It was advice from my parents and it's worked so well. Do vacuuming, make noise, do everything while they sleep, they'll be more resilient and you'll have more time.

As a former pest tech I recommend wrapping the end of your condensate drain tubes with some mesh screen. When it's driest is also when that AC will be a running stream for wasps and roaches.

Maybe you already thought of it but you might want to capture the condensate for auxiliary free water. When we installed our first central air split system I put a 5 gal bucket at the condensate outlet and it would fill up every single day. So I exchanged the 5 gal bucket for a 55 gal drum and used the collected water for irrigating our garden. It was very expensive water to make, so I did not want it to go to waste.

Something to consider... Generally speaking, it isn't recommended to use AC condensate for things related to human consumption since it can contain heavy metals. Might be good for a flower garden but probably best to avoid using it in a vegetable garden.

They already have a dedicated machine that makes water out of condensate in the air. I guess you're not a regular watcher of their channel. At 14:00 - 14:04 you can see the machine in the background. That big white machine on the ground is the water-maker.

@@xNYCMarc I AM a regular watcher and also I am aware of their "machine" to make water. I also know that they were not pleased with how it worked (watch the follow-up episode) and had to find another alternative for getting water. I was simply offering them an alternative that I found, that may be useful for their needs, as well as the needs for anyone else who might watch their channel. Admittedly this method may not work for everyone as I live in the south where it is quite humid in the summertime and there is lots of moisture in the air to make water out of.

From personal experience, I would take a small piece of window screen and form it over the drain pan drain because you’ve already had rodents and insects in the attic and wasps and mud Dobbers love to use that open hole to make a home and then it doesn’t drain water and I’m sure you get the point a piece of screen screwed down to prevent them from getting to it helps

I wonder if u could use a small piece of a pool chlorine tablet occasionally in the condensate overflow tray to stove off rodents & pests if water did ever happen to flow into it, the water would activate the pool chlorine, sterilise the water to reduce algae buildup & keep unwanted pests away & from drinking or using it.

I have two Mr. Cool mini-split units and one failed last week at 5-1/2 years. Based on the lack of response from Mr. Cool in past years, I decided to rip it out and replace it with a main line brand as the warranty problems must be verified by a licensed HVAC technician anyway. Many HVAC contractors will not touch DIY installations. The fixed length DIY line sets really limit the condenser placement and the suction line is actually braided steel rubber hose with copper ends. I'm going with real copper lines and the flexibility of placing the condenser appropriately. No doubt, Mr. Cool is a hot seller and just about every major RU-vidr has a few free ones.

You're absolutely correct, Riley. Too many HVAC installers undersize the return air register and duct which starves the unit of fresh air. When it comes to the return air side, better to oversize than undersize.

Pro Tip for using a hole saw. Replace the drill bit in the hole saw with a section of drill rod with a rounded tip. Use a regular drill bit to drill the pilot hole. The smooth shank of the drioo rod will NOT enlarge the pilot hole and the hole saw will cut a cleaner hole, and you don't end up with a broken bit in the middle of your job. If the air flow out of your outlets is too much and restricting the registers makes them noisy you may be able toadjust the fan motor speed.

BC Rockies here. The skidsteer height solution brought back a memory from 40 years ago when working on a beehive burner at a mom and pop lumber mill in the Columbia valley when I was eighteen. The conveyer from the mill to the burner ran up at a 30ish degree angle and had come apart past the halfway point. Sooo the foreman puts TWO lifts of lumber on the forklift and wanted me to climb on top of the two lifts of wood and THEN be lifted to the max height of the forklift, ON UNEVEN GROUND! And then reach up further to manhandle the fix. I respectfully declined. So they got some other poor sap to do it. He lived. I was not fired nor reprimanded for the refusal to work. We didn't have cell phones then but it only takes a regular land line and one little finger to make one little call the WCB, workers compensation board, who is in charge of paying damaged workers.

Nice install. I suggest you wrap or foam the exposed metal on registers in the attic. The cold metal will cause moisture to condense and then ruin you sheetrock.

I always install a moisture sensor in the emergency overflow drip pan below the air handler connected to a light or bell or blue tooth to my phone to alert that primary condensate pan has malfunctioned and get service preformed on unit before disaster strikes, it's low voltage and low cost insurancefor the piece of mind it provides as when (all A/C Air handlers will expirence a blockage sometime in their lifetime) drain becomes blocked all the water collected will make for a lot of damage this simple precaution can save you hundreds if not thousands of times the cost of installing preventing water damage to your home. Put a little piece of screen over both ends of the pipe for the secondary drain pan and the end ( outside ) of the primary drain line so you don't get dirt dobbers clogging up the drains and flooding your attic. Just put a square of screen over the end of the pipe pull the edges of the screen down the sides of the pipe and secure in place with a sun resistant zip tie.

My wife and I so admire everything you do up there. We will be relocating to southern Idaho and our plan is to build a setup similar to yours. We plan to be 100% off the grid too. They are actually producing the solar system you guys have, complete with panels. We also plan to do a lot of greenhouse growing. Great job on installing that unit! I'm sort of surprised that Riley has not made a metal frame with a platform and rails for the skid steer pallet forks so he can safely be lifted and work on higher projects like this one. A lot better than the old fashioned ladder.

You need to fix the condensate P-Trap. The one you installed is not deep enough. 2+2 inches is the correct size. Check your manual. This is very important for this unit because the blower pulls air through the cooling coil. If the trap is too shallow, the condensate will not drain while the blower is running. The blower will also pull air from the drain causing condensate splashing at the drain outlet. This can often cause water leaking at the sheet metal seam. Fix that and this is a superb video installation. Mr. Cool definitely got their money’s worth for advertising. They should pay you royalties for each view. That second drain opening is for a secondary drain pipe if the main condensate pipe stops draining. An optional float switch to shut off the thermostat wire for cooling is also part of most attic installation codes for the sub pan. The condensate line in attics can also drip condensation from the surface of the pipe, so it is often insulated to prevent condensation. I am very glad to see those special line-set valves installed. This makes it all possible and easy for DIY. Safety on leaders is a big deal but that tote stacking idea was an excellent idea & safer than working off a ladder.

Avoid surprises, a Blink camera in the attic and you can monitor the water tray without climbing into the attic. You can turn on and off the Blink with your cell phone and it's two AA lithium batteries will last a couple of years.

Next step would be the efficient use of water by splitting it into fresh water, grey water and black water. You could catch the condensate of the a/c units and add it to the grey water tank. Or maybe even add it to the fresh water tank with additional filtration. The grey water can be used to flush the toilet and for irrigation.

The one thing I think I'd add to your setup is a water leak detector/alarm in that pan so you know when there's a problem with the primary condensate drain and you can fix it before you develop a problem with the secondary drain and ruin your ceiling

I love that little boy. So cute. I remember those days. Mr. Cool rocks. It is hard to understand why more cold air machine manufacturers don't get in the DIY business. We installed a mini-split in a shed where the condenser is just on the other side of the wall from the air andler (so super simple), using a Home Depot fake concrete pad. Took less than two hours.

I'm kind of surprised you didn't do it at night time when it was cooler as that hundred degree Heat would cause me to be drenched with sweat stopping me from seeing. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face with your unit Integrity working together and accomplishing such a wonderful, absolutely Stellar piece of paradise! You'll want to periodically check the tape around the system to make sure the glue does not disintegrate causing leaks. Don't forget to get a reusable filter that you can just hose off. I spent years and years with the inefficient one-use filters that were so expensive and inconvenient having to buy so often. So very happy with the reusable types and much, much cheaper in the long run. 💯

I appolligize for saying VERY COOL, but it is ! I wished I had this option before putting a huge 3 ton unit, on our roof. And we only have a 1,000 Sq foot house. You guys did an excellent job and I think, you made a very good decision. @ambition strikes .Hey quick tip to avoid breaking pilot bit in hole saw in difficult materials . Start the hole as normal . Get a 1/4 20 bolt long as your pilot bit , cut the head off and grind a tiny flat and switch the pilot bit for bolt .

The more noise you make while Oliver is asleep the better…it will make him a better sleeper and teach him how to self sooth. I could vacuum outside my kids bedrooms, and they would sleep right through it. I could walk in their bedrooms to put things away, and they wouldn’t wake up… MAKE NOISE, live your life normally, get stuff done when he is asleep… You will be happy you did!!!

I live in the sunny southwest & we need AC for much of the year. Some of the homes have air handlers in the attic. However, those aren't as efficient as those with them mounted in air-conditioned spaces. My air handler is in a closet in the center of my home. They used that fiberboard for ductwork as well. You may find that your AC uses more current becasue of its location. Just my 2 cents & worth every penny. LOL

I got a tiny chunk of wood in the corner of my eye. We were camping and a friend used a little stick to carefully pluck it out. Sort of like surgery. Nice cool air for you place. Wonderful.

Nice install. Here in south Florida, I always see that second condensate hole with a 90 degree cup to hold a float switch. This will turn off the unit in the event of water blockage. Same in the pan too. Impressive C was able to muscle that AH up in the attic. Great teamwork!

When I lived in Portland, Or, all my registers were in the ceiling which is great for air conditioning as cold air falls but sucks for heating, cause it raises and it stayed up there. Despite running ceiling fans in every room the way they should be run in the winter to force the warm air down, for the 9 months of the year the heat was on, my feet and legs were always freezing 🥶 So if you already have radiant heat floor 👏👏👏👏👏👏 you are ahead of the curve on this one

Courtney & Riley, thank you for once again sharing your projects. I recently installed a heat pump in my home for heat, AC, and ventilation. It works so good and acts as a dehumidifier too. Well done guys. You rock!❤

Any time you build sheet metal plenums, leave the cap off so you can squish them down to get in the attic. Also instead of using tube based sealants, I would suggest getting a gal of duct seal (duct butter, mastic, pookie, or what ever people want to call it). It paints on and works well. Also I would recommend putting a safety switch in the secondary drain to protect your ceiling, and leave the aux pan drain as a backup if all fails. Either way, you guys did it your selves and that is a great plus.

I’m an HVAC installer been doing it for about 10 years now and got to give you both props as that’s a job well done for DIY install. A couple things I would have done differently simply from having the experience but overall I’m well impressed with your work. 👍🏻
