Get a set of pin gauges Yuchol. They are very handy for checking hole sizes as you bore them. Even the import ones are quite accurate. You can easily sneak up on the dimension checking with a known pin size. When you got to about .4950" you can then slow your depth of cut and get a very precise fit. I really enjoy your videos. Joe

Nice job thank you and thank you for the videos also I do love that machine, and top marks for not pulling on a pair of gloves except where you needed them such as for packing your bearings, it seems the Americans do it all the time you just can not feel anything in gloves they can not seem to be able to do any job without them it does annoy me as an Aussie we hardly were gloves to do anything.

Looking great Yuchol. Ironic you uploaded this, I'm in the process of the same for the compound on my lathe. I decided to order threaded rod from McMaster because the inserts to cut the Acme thread I need are more expensive than double the finished material length for the project. Plus cutting screw threads with a messed up compound feed is... challenging. 🤣

That is looking beautiful. I love how everyone says American was so superior and then you have that lead screw. We were not always so high falutin, we just think we were better than everyone. In reality, not always.

I had the same problem with snap gauges until I saw a video by Abom where he showed you should rock/pivot the gauge across the faces of the micrometer until you can just feel resistance. You can not use the ratchet on the micrometer. Even after I stripped, cleaned and deburred the cheap chinese snap gauges I still had to bin them. Bought a set of used Mitutoyo snap gauges from ebay

Not just McMaster Mark, the stuff that they can get in the US that we can't get in the UK always brasses me off. If we can get it, then we have to pay in Pounds what the US pay in $ and then we have to add 20% VAT to it as well. It's no wonder the guys over there have such well equipped workshops. If you look at an American Pacemaker lathe, they can buy them for $4-5K. Our equivalent would be a Dean Smith & Grace, which might be triple the price with VAT. Having said that, there would be an argument that the DSG would be a better machine.

I always drop the telescoping gage through the anvils, never close down on it with the micrometer for exactly this reason. Sorry that caught you out, but they are working fine.

That grinder is really coming along well, it'll look better than new when it's finished. Except maybe for that rubber gaiter😊. Just one small tip. I noticed when you filed the taper pins that you filed "around" the circumference of the leadscrew. Counterintuitively, if you file in the opposite direction, so that the front of the file rises and the back falls in relation to the circumference, you will end up with a more circular and accurate finish.

Lead screws tend to be of high precision and hardened and ground, but the off-the-shelf screw material is probably good enough if a DRO is used anyway.

I caught your text on this but for some reason YouTub is about 2wks behind on recomending videos to me. (hahaha, maybe I need to watch more to catch up) Anywho, further down one of your viewer (stacy) mentioned pin gauges. All in all that can be a really great way to go without going to all the expense of a full set of 3-pointed bore mic's to cover the range. -Just thinking out loud here and agreeing with Stacy! Oh yeah, and nice work. This is up to your usual high standards :) Looks great man!

I have a couple of these machines. I always felt like the threads on that leadscrew needs to be the opposite hand. I always have think about which way to turn the hand wheel when operating from the front. It seems backwards compared to a milling machine. Also did you find a replacement for the spindle bearings? one of mine needs new ones.

@robbvk6es

You are using the telescoping gauges incorrectly. The correct technique is to insert the gauge at an angle, tighten the gauge and then roll the gauge through the bore so that it is forced to collapse to the bore diameter. With the gauge tightened sufficiently it will not move while taking the measurement.

High risk vs reward. Cutting a long ACME thread on a home size lathe or older lathe; a lot can go wrong. "long ACMEs are not easy" Plus all the other features on the ends. Using a commercially made screw blank, is good safe method for the repair.
@glennwright9747
@glennwright9747 Год назад
@@woodscreekworkshop9939 I was wondering about the cost of the screw, and if there was enough clearance to cut the threads off and turn your features.

I highly doubt that lead screw was the original. I would say that was shop made. I have had mine apart and it looks much much nicer than that one. I doubt cincinnati would have made that.
