Replacement of 2010 Hyundai Elantra Stereo

I was very happy with my factory stereo, but when it began showing issues with the main board, I chose to buy a used replacement for cheap money. The replacement arrived with some cosmetic damage, so I combined parts from my old unit with the new one with great results.

I know the feeling, when I bought my car the stock radio was laying on the floor of the passenger seat and later found out didn't work anyway lol

Seems like a pretty straightforward guide. My 2010 Elantra radio has been on the fritz for several years, only seems to work when it's really hot out or the car warms up significantly. I've taken it to various mechanics and asked them to check it, and I've been told it probably needs to be replaced, so...I may take the plunge and buy a factory radio like this and follow your guide to replace it myself. Never really been all that handy, but it's worth a shot. Seems easy enough.

The hardest part is disconnecting the dash clock - be very careful with that connector! If I had to do it over, I’d have installed a good quality aftermarket stereo rather than waste money on a factory unit.

Thanks alot for showing me how to open up that case and how to protect the under part of the radio. My 2010 Hyundai Elantra radio is really different from yours but your video was just perfect to encourage me to change my radio myself. My radio would not turn on (although we could see the clock functionning). We bought a used one but not of the same year and it was not a match at the plug in area. So I completely disassembled it from the car thinking about bringing it with us to get one with the same plug. Well, it is only at that moment that I noticed that the radio had a 10 amp fuse. It was burnt. We changed it and it is working A1. Just crazy to having to disassemble the radio to find out there is a fuse behind it. We never saw in the manual of the car that a fuse was behind that radio.

Used this video to get an idea how to replace the AC controls below the radio. This video had everything I needed to get bezel off. Only other step is removing the storage box screws below it to set to the bottom screws. Thanks for posting this, saved my daughter $500 at the dealer.

Thank you for this. Yours is the only video I've found for this model (Blue) so I'm using it as a reference for installing an aftermarket stereo. Turns out many of the reputable aftermarket stereo sites out there try to give you the wrong antenna adapter, so being able to see the wiring setup at 12:03 was a big help in selecting the right one.

Thanks for making this video. I've always kind figured that cover would just pop off but as firmly as it hold in place, I was always afraid to attempt removal. Now I know how to go about it... 👍🏻 And I'll stsrt with the lower passenger side clip because it seemed to pop easiest. 👌🏻 👊 🇺🇸

I just had to replace the head unit in my SAAB. Rear channel transistors blew, and Clarion used an obscure transistor pack that's discontinued and has no cross-reference, so I had to replace it with a junkyard one. Was a pain in the ass crawling in ten different 900's, pulling the head unit and everything in the glove box to find one that had the security PIN either written on the head unit or a card in the manual.

Good video. Can the heater/AC control unit below the radio be easily removed once you had the radio cover off? I'm thinking about replacing the unit, and this might be the first step.

Thanks for the info on removing the dash. I'm going with aftermarket as I have the same cold soldering issue on my stock headunit. Why would you buy a used stock unit that may suffer from the same problem?
@compactc9

I don't mind aftermarket radios in some situations, but I hate how they don't match the vehicle's dash styling and look I guess. Everything in the dash from the factory has an overall similar look and feel, all the knobs and buttons and such, aftermarket radios tend to disrupt that, the better units definitely look and work better for sure though. But they will always remain a last resort to me. I've got a weird issue in my Durango with the Infinity Audio system, I've replaced the old and decayed (the foam around the outside of the cones on multiple doors/speakers was falling apart on the larger lower speakers) 6.5in speakers in all the doors with brand new Infinity speakers, but left the tweeters alone since they're still sounding good, however I have a strange issue that was there already before that too, if I hit a bump or rough road section that causes vibration I get a static sound in one or more speakers in the truck, I suspect a bad connection at either the head unit or the factory Infinity amp, so I'll be doing some looking into that when I get a chance on a nice day.

This is very informative. My radio is like yours. But right now, it's saying "Not Ready" when I choose the XM mode, then it beeps and goes back to regular radio. I have a lifetime membership. At this point, it would be worth it to me to get some practice in electronics since I just learned how to solder and I don't want to buy a new radio. I miss satellite radio! +Mike Rizzo Well, installing a stereo in this car is relatively plug-and-play; just buy the right wiring harness adapter and a single-DIN dashboard kit for your car and the rest is relatively foolproof. Crutchfield will have everything you need.

My mom has a 2007 Elantra with a very basic stereo. Would you think if we purchased a newer stereo with more features we may be able to get the parts to upgrade it to the one you have? I know 2007-2010 is the same body design, but I'm wondering if she couldn't get some more features just for that low cost. Thinking it might be more complicated than that however, because I assume I'd have to find the USB/Dock or whatever and then find out how to disassemble the whole thing to wire it.
@bbishoppcm
@bbishoppcm 8 лет назад
+Adam Jones Your best bet in this case is to buy an aftermarket stereo and mounting/wiring kit; you'll have a much better sounding stereo with updated features (bluetooth, XM, iOS or Android integration, etc) for a reasonable cost. There are so many aftermarket systems to choose from, you'll be able to get exactly what you want.
@adamjones6861
@adamjones6861 8 лет назад
That's what I thought. The stereo you have cosmetically is completely identical, just different display and hers doesn't have the iPod feature, still has the headphone type auxiliary. Very nice video too, I think many are quick to criticise camera work without ever making an attempt to make videos on their own, you did a great job being slightly cramped up in that car

I am not aware of a factory touchscreen option in the 2010 Elantra... also, touchscreen interfaces don't belong in automobiles, in my opinion. Tactile feedback buttons and switches save lives by reducing distractions.

+Alec F You probably already found it by now, but I'm going to tell you anyways. There's a retention cable for the dock (Metra AX-HYKIA-USB) that converts the dock to regular USB & RCA wires. I would recommend getting a unit that has inputs in the back to keep the setup nice and clean. For the RCA wires you can buy an adapter that converts them to a single 3.5mm plug.

We just got my wife a 2014 Rav4. It has a real fancy radio with blue tooth. Her iPhone contacts are on the display. She tells Siri to call and she calls. I love it. I want one for my '06 Tacoma. Any brand suggestions? I hear they have DVD players in them also. I have gone on two rides with my Helix. Its so good to be riding again. Weather in New England (Western Mass.) has gone down the tubes again for the forseeable future.
@grassulo
@grassulo 10 лет назад
I'm in New England too, Worcester MA, I even ride in winter though, so the cold doesn't bother me, just got to make sure you have good tires on your scoot, and winter riding gear helps too. And definitely switch to synthetic oil, I recommend the Autozone brand 5W30 full synthetic, scooter started right up even in 15 degree cold, or mobil 1, our bikes don't take much oil and it's really worth it using synthetic. As for radios do not buy ANY of them from Wal-Mart (junk!!), go to Best Buy and play with the display model ones and find one you like, then go online and see if you can get that one for cheaper on Amazon or Ebay.

The radio DSP IC needs resoldered. Ive fixed a dozen of those things. Another thing to watch out for, is the 6 disc mechanism will fail. They all do. We get them alot in the shop, and we just rip them out and stick in a new aftermarket radio, with USB, aux, bluetooth audio, etc..
@bbishoppcm
@bbishoppcm 10 лет назад
I figured it was a cold or dry solder joint... just not sure which chip it would be. Would the chip need to be removed, cleaned, and resoldered? I saved all spare parts just in case...
@THEtechknight
@THEtechknight 10 лет назад
BBISHOPPCM's World Its the main IC that is in the audio path, there is one centralized IC that connects the USB, aux, and all the analog inputs feed into it as well, it also does the signal processing for the bass, treble, etc. You dont need to pull and redo it. Its a regular quad flat pack IC, just lay down some chipquik SMD soldering flux, or kingbo, something of the like and go at it with a hot air pencil. You will see the joints get nice and shiny, your done. That should take care of the problem.
@THEtechknight
@THEtechknight 10 лет назад
BBISHOPPCM's World Just finished watching your video, its the chip in the center with the white sticker. that is the audio processor. The large IC is a DSP, which also serves as the main computer as well. You can try both. Either way, you will need to remove the conformal silicon/coating on the pins, or any attempt will be futile.

@bbishoppcm
@bbishoppcm Год назад
It sounds like your radio has what’s called a “cold solder joint,” basically, one of the hundreds of solder joints in the radio has cracked, and when it heats up, it opens the circuit. Your best bet on such an old car is to buy a single-DIN stereo install kit for your car from Crutchfield, and buy a decent stereo to install into it - then throw the old stereo in the trash. The nice thing is, your car is old enough to accept an aftermarket stereo when almost nothing made today has that option.

What year/make is your car? The factory stereo in the 2010 Elantra (and others) equipped with steering wheel mounted controls, and/or the USB iPod connector in the console, will have extra cables coming out the dash for those. Also, if your vehicle has or had a rear view camera, it will also have a video signal cable for that as well.

No, I ended up dumping the car at 96,000 miles due to a pending THIRD transaxle failure. Before I get jumped on for “not taking care of my car,” I actually had the transaxle dealer-serviced every 30k. There was a well-known flaw in the 2010 Elantra’s automatic transaxle that led to rough shifting and eventual failure. The new 2014 Elantra I bought to replace it gave me 115,000 trouble-free miles before I traded it in for a SantaFe Sport!

That's not gonna happen. I wasn't going to make the video at all, but I figured someone could get something from this footage (and they have). Why do you need to see the cables? This is a very straight-forward job. There are two or three different stereo wiring harnesses for the 2007-10 Elantras, and as far as I know, one version isn't "plug-and-play" with the other; so you're better off taking yours apart to see which harness you have, then crossmatching it with an install kit.
