I just replaced my heat exchanger on my 20-year-old furnace. Why?? I've replaced about every part on it in the last 3 years and bought extra parts that I have on the shelf. I know this furnace inside and out and can troubleshoot and service it myself versus paying someone. The quality of this furnace is still better than most of the cheap junk I see being sold. As long as parts are available, I'll keep it.

Honest? All parts and labor might be same price with new one. They have around 20 parts on furnace will fell soon. Get new unit you have years of warranty on it. It take 1 to 2 hours. Don't let them do this to your house ok.

Another high quality video with good information. I have a 20 year old Goodman split system. Each winter I visually inspect the burners to insure they are working properly. In Southern California, we average 15 to 25 nights of use for the furnace heat, usually 3 hours in the evening. Hopefully, this small amount of use will allow another 20 years of use with regular maintenance.

This was common years ago on lennox furnaces , lennox sent out a kit Stainless bolt nut and 2 washers to replace crip rings which is stronger . Seems overkill to replace heat exchanger when a couple of washers could fix the issue

You appear to be working on the exact same model as my unit. I really appreciate the video and you taking the time to show the procedure. I don't need to replace my heat exchanger right now but I suspect there will come a time. It just looks like a lot of careful disassembly and sharp edges and taking care to get everything back together properly. Working with a system that uses natural gas and emits carbon monoxide and other gasses one needs to observe a good amount of common sense. My heat exchanger runs $471 plus shipping and I suspect with my experience I can do the labor. If I had a criticism it would be that your video runs through the disassembly really damn quick 🙂

thanks for the video. I would not be afraid to tackle that job. Of course, I am fairly familiar with the parts on my furnace, and I am pretty mechanically inclined. It's a case of taking your time and thinking ahead as you go. Of course, if it's under warranty, I, as a homeowner wouldn't be able to do it myself I suspect. I have a two speed Trane with the variable speed blower. I'm more concerned about that super expensive ECM blower motor. I am installing a surge protector on the furnace to try and protect it. Those modules on those motors are super expensive by themselves without including the motor.

When dealing with a cracked heat exchanger, does the CO only get pulled through the ventilation system by the forced air, or would it also come out the front of the furnace?
@Jon-hx7pe
@Jon-hx7pe 2 года назад
depends on the nature of the cracks - in the right places, they can push flame and exhaust out of the front of the furnace. furnaces do have rollout switches, but they aren't fool-proof.

It depends on if there is other problems with the furnace. If it’s just the inducer, I would say to just replace the part but I haven’t inspected it. $500 to $1000 seems to be common. On some units it can be a multi-hour job because you have to break down practically the whole system to get at it. Factor in the cost of the part and labor and it can frequently exceed 50% of the cost of a new unit, which means most are replaced in their entirety.

Just received a quote to replace heat exchanger for $4345. But they’re being generous & giving a $650 ‘good customer discount’. Let’s say the part cost $1000 which it don’t but let’s run with that for now. That means labor is $3350. We can subtract the $650 from it & it still is $2700. Suppose it took him all day or 8 hours… that’s $350/hr on labor. But realistically it takes 4 hours right? And that’s including his bologna sandwich with Fritos lunch! So now labor is $700/hour.

Supply house has heat exchanger prices - for mine it's $420 - Rheem Criterion 2 - 23yrs old . Then 4 hrs labor - even at outrageous but universal $300/hr -- - still "only" $1620. Others cannot be that different. Maybe it's just that they don't want to the 3-4hrs solid work in one go -- and disassemble everything and have to know what they are doing --- when they can just rip off $3K +as markup + still charge 4hrs labor - on a new system. Most repairs are much less than an hour - but they still charge $300+ for labor and double the part cost - and refuse to quote parts/labor separately - instead quote "the job". It is a ripoff.
