Power Steering pump was making a lot of noise when it was cold, decided it was best to replace it.
In this video, I replace the power steering pump. Not that difficult, but this in my way of doing it.

Just had to come on here and say thank you! I have a 2009 Odyssey and my power steering has been making noise for a few years, but only in the winter. This year the noise was constant. First I replaced some O-rings in the hose, but that didn't solve the problem. I had a slow leak in the hose and kept filling the fluid every month or so. I found videos on how to replace, but was too nervous because of the location and not having the right tools. I had a mechanic do it. Cost me $300, typical, but too expensive to me. He said I probably needed a new pump too and it would cost $600 for the job. I got a pump on Amazon for $70 and replaced it in less than 20 minutes. Your video gave me the guts to do it. The only thing I needed to get help with was loosening the tension on the belt. Once I got that, it was easy.

One the best repair videos I have ever seen. Plenty of light and good narration and some nice tips to make the job easier. Thanks.

Completed this job today. Tips: 1) There are two different 19mm bolt heads mounted to the serpentine belt tensioner plate, one high and one low. I stripped the lower one, but found the upper one much easier to push towards the vehicle's rear as it has more leverage against the hydraulic serpentine belt tensioner mounted low on the passenger side of the engine. I used a 19mm, 3/8 inch drive, splined socket connected to the long serpentine belt bar tool, also 3/8 inch drive, both from Harbor Freight. YOU MUST PUSH VERY SLOWLY AND STEADILY to overcome the hydraulic tensioner without stripping a bolt head. The thin serpentine belt bar tool is very helpful in this really confined workspace. I strongly recommend against using a crowbar or prybar against the crankshaft pulley/oscillation damper as it can generate a really large expense. 2) Really helps to move the power steering fluid reservoir to free up space. 3) Good idea to tie your vehicle's hood to garage roof overhead as the hood support rod gets very much in the way. I discovered a second hole in the hood that fits perfectly and allowed me to raise my 2007 Odyssey hood much, much higher than the usual amount. 4) After finishing the job and having drained the reservoir, the new fluid was clean until the moment I started the engine. It dropped from high to below low in moments and darkened up again. Wish I had looked up the full draining/flushing procedure - due every 60,000 miles/100,000 km. 5) Steering is doing fine, but will monitor it closely for the next week or two to see if the leakage has stopped. I only did this as mine has been leaking since we first bought this van 20 months ago. It now has 151,000 miles. Honda of America refused to help with either this power steering pump leakage problem or the dark blue paint (Touring edition) that is peeling off in golf ball sized chunks.

Samuel Thompson yeah before I installed the new pump I flush the old power steering a couple times with the old pump on so no containment’s went into the new pump

I haven’t replaced the pump on my 2007 Odyssey, but replaced the pressure hose, the o-rings, and that sound towards the end of video is what my car sounds like. When I turn on the car I don’t hear anything close to what your van sounded like. So I’m going to keep driving in hopes that air comes out. It’s been at least weeks since I replaced the pressure hose, I’m hoping it’s goes away. Great video.

Thanks for this great video. It gave me the confidence to do the job. I wish the description contained the year of the Odyssey. The maker says 2008, I just think it would be helpful at no cost. While the pump was removed I checked the bearings on the tensioner and “idler roller” (not sure the proper name) and there was slight wiggle in the idler. Also replacing the belt while it’s all apart.

Changed mine a little trick to get the belt back on cuz the tensioner bolts are a pain. Put on the belt put it on the back of the PS pulley and turn the PS pulley with a wrench and it will put itself back on it

There's a tensioner pully right under the power steering pump that allows you to release the serpentine belt so you don't have to do that last part. It's a bitch taking that belt off like that.

Aloha from Hawaii! Just want to say such a huge thank you! People like you who take such massive time to detail a repair like this, and help so many of us out there are rock stars in my opinion. Thank you again! I followed carefully making my notes, but have one small question. Was there any difficulty getting tension back in the belt? Do I need to go under the van for that?

I didn't have any problem with the tension. I don't recall if you need to go under or not.

Is changing the belt the same way just losen the pulley and put it on?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 2 года назад
You have to relieve the tensioner. Not loosening the pulley.

Great video. I'm ordering my power steering pump today! Quick question. About 2 weeks ago, on top of the whining and groaning noise you were experiencing, I started hearing a loud tapping/clicking noise under 2000 rpms. Above that rpm it goes away. Could this be associated with the bad power steering pump? Would a new pump fix it? To be honest the whining noise on my odyssey has been present for about a year and a half now. I'm wondering if it's got so bad that the tapping noise is a result? Thanks for all you help and input.
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 4 года назад
If the noise exists after you change the pump, it's likely the timing belt tensioner. I replaced one of those too. It's in the Honda Playlist.
@andrewbahadoor1427
@andrewbahadoor1427 4 года назад
@@JoDaddysGarage Thanks Jo. You seem pretty confident in your response. I'm guessing the noise goes away due to the extra tension created above 2000rpms

@@andrewbahadoor1427 I just know from the sounds mine made. The other option is the rocker arms are slightly out of adjustment.

Jo Daddy's Garage you were right on the money with the timing belt tensioner. I changed it out and the ticking noise is gone so thank you!! However, one noise went away and another appeared. Before changing out the timing belt tensioner I removed the accessory belt to make sure the noise wasn't coming from one of the pulleys. When I put it back on, I got a quiet squealing. Sprayed water on the inside of the belt while it was running and the noise went away. Misaligned pulley?
@andrewbahadoor1427

Jo Daddy's Garage or could it be the belt was put in backwards?

I paid someone to replace the leaking top hose. Afterwards, it squealed like a banshee. They claimed it would just take time to bleed out the air. (B.S. - no change after a week) The dealer told me the only thing it could be is a bad pump. (Idiot) I used a turkey baster to remove the fluid from the reservoir. Hardly any spilled. I got the pump out. removed the bottom pipe and noticed there was no resistance. The new o-ring on top was very hard to pull off. This made me suspicious. I tested the spring of the o-ring. It broke into 3 pieces. I figured it was worth a shot, so I put on a new o-ring, put it all back together, and like magic, it works fine with no noise. I'm guessing when they replaced the top hose, even though they didn't touch the bottom hose, while the fluid was drained out, the o-ring dried out and became like glass.

I am having the same problem (noise as well as hard to steer but mainly when turning). Do you know if hard to steer is related to having a bad pump? Also, should the hoses be changed while doing pump change?
@JoDaddysGarage
@JoDaddysGarage 7 лет назад
It could be the pump or the rack and pinion. I did end up changing the pressure hose later. It would be a good time to do both.
