Replacing a Rotten Tile Floor Caused By Leaky Toilet - Part 1

This rotten tile floor has to be replaced. We installed new laminate floors for this homeowner a couple years ago. At that time we told the homeowner that the stool was leaking really bad and needed to be fixed. He agreed but didn’t have the means at that time.
When we installed the laminate the tile around the stool was just cracked and a little loose. As you can see in the video the floor has gotten much worse. Now the stool is actually sinking and the floor around it is really soft.
The first thing we are going to do is remove the toilet, door and base trim. Once those things are out of the way we are going to hang plastic over the vanity to keep the dust off of it.
After all the job prep is done we will remove the tile and underlayment. We will also remove the subfloor and get down to the floor joists. We also want to look at the toilet drain and figure out what’s causing it to leak. Usually it’s a poorly installed wax ring and sometimes it’s more than that.
In the case of this job the stool flange was improperly installed and that was the cause of the leak. In order to fix the problem we cut out a section of pipe and replaced it with PVC.
We are a bathroom remodeler servicing the Columbia Missouri area. If you are needing your bathroom updated give us a call, we would love to interview for your project. Our tile installations include a lifetime manufacturer warranty.

Thank you for taking the time to post this video. When I have to pull toilets I use a 18v Milwaukee shop vac to suck out the water from the bowl and tank. It's an extra step but it makes the toilet a lot easier to carry

It made me cringe, too. I wonder how many times they touched the homeowner's door knobs and other surfaces on their way in and out of the house. Great way to spread pathogens, though.

Lol... the more you work with it, the more your immunities build up to it. Im not saying that you should put your face right in it or work with open wounds, but studies have shown that THE OPPOSITE actually gets you more infections(using antibacterial soap, washing hands excessively, using alcohol wipes too frequently, etc...). You end up killing GOOD bacteria on your skin in the process. First time I worked as a lot porter and had to clean under trash cans, I became so sick! As I worked at the same job longer, for 7 years roughly, I haven't been sick since then! Also ive gotten covid several times. First time was HORRIBLE! Second time was so so, third time? Like a regular cold/ flu. Never vaccinated(thank God) only using natural antibodies! Ppl just scare themselves crazy it seems lol

@@desireerufer1114uhmm pathogens? IN A HOUSE WITH SEVERELY ROTTED AND MOLDY FLOORING ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? LOL they're already there! The spores are microscopic and airborne! Whoever was living in that house had come into contact with "pathogens" many times prior to these two fixing things lol

How do you know if the drain is the issue and not the wax seal around the toilet?
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy
It’s nearly always the wax seal. Cast iron drains get cut out and replaced when they’re rusted out.

Why not pull that vanity? The wood under it _had_ to be rotten, right?
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy 3 года назад
Not necessarily. The vanity is also supported by being anchored to the wall as well. Everyone’s budget runs out someplace, we did all we could without tearing the whole bathroom apart.

Put it inside a contractor size garbage bag and tie it up so it won’t spill. Then you carry it out of the way.You’re welcome 😉

EJ flooring.& custom tile installation, My bathroom looks about the same exact size with vanity as well, About how much would a job of that size normally cost, with material & labor??
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy 4 года назад
Thanks for the question. It would be pretty hard to give a definitive price based off this particular project. For a standard bathroom that requires no structural repair we charge about $1,500-$2,000 to remove and replace the flooring. This would be a for tile installation, as that’s what we do. This particular job was a little over $2,500 because the subfloor and drain needed to be repaired. If you’d like me to set up a time to look at your project, I’d be happy to. Feel free to give me a call or text (573) 289-1045. Thanks, Eric Blumer.

About how much is this procedure in a 1940s bathroom
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy
It will really depend on several factors. 1940’s tile is installed differently and can be difficult to remove.

Why PVC and not ABS?
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy 3 года назад
PVC is more readily available and a stronger pipe. ABS is no longer allowed by code here. You can only get a few fittings, pretty much repair only. Great question, thanks.
@froyboy4life
@froyboy4life 3 года назад
@@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy I only ask because I happened to go to a plumbing supply store today and asked the same question, he said pvc is brittle.
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy
@friendlyneighborhoodtileguy 3 года назад
PVC is brittle compared to ABS, but PVC is much stronger. ABS is easily deformed and very soft. It’s also more caustic and has secondary issues with people that work with it regularly I believe.
